The Weaving Studio:

Located a comfortable stroll from the Johnson House, the Weaving Studio offers more intimate accommodations. Hand built by Carter and Molly Hanner in the 1970’s, the studio originally housed the Hanner weaving operations. The Hanners cultivated and harvested plants for their unusual dyes. They wove their own cloth and designed and manufactured scarves, wraps, and other clothing into wearable art. Close observation of the studio reveals evidence of the contraptions and devices used in the process.

The living room offers plenty of space for spreading out under a high, open–beam, pine ceiling. A wood-burning stove and ample natural lighting add to the abiding atmosphere of simple country craftsmanship. The master bedroom, up a flight of stairs in a spacious loft, opens onto views of the nearby forest and vineyards. The studio is perfect for two people, although a sofa bed in the living room easily accommodates a third or fourth.

The kitchen is of hand-hewn post and beam construction and opens onto the right bank of Peterson Creek. The creek flows from the nearby mountains and forest to provide year-round water for the grapes. Step outside to enjoy the sights and sounds and aromas of the day. Walk the wooden footbridge crossing to the far side. Wild blackberries flourish in season. Oaks and cedars provide welcome shade on hot days. Bring your morning coffee or afternoon refreshment into the nearby vineyards, inspect the grapes, stretch your legs.

Great Setting

The Weaving Studio is a quaint location inside the vineyard, of my favorite winery. We were there during harvest and crush season and were able to walk in the vineyard, but it was a bit noisy early on as the workers started their day. The cottage is a bit far from the tasting room and from town, but the quiet (after the workers leave) was amazing and the sunrise/sunset over the vineyards is not to be missed.

Bring food and drink (or buy some wine in the tasting room) as it is quite far from town. Good place to stay, but a bit remote.

Perfect Couples Getaway / She Said Yes

This place is amazing. I wanted to plan an engagement proposal and the place was not only a perfect place to do it, but Alicia was also very helpful and willing to work with my schedule. She let me come by early and set up flowers and lights everywhere and she showed up to light candles when I was 20-30 minutes from the place with my now fiancé. The place looked great and we had a very special and romantic weekend getaway. We kind of feel like this place is going to be our little getaway retreat forever and we couldn't be happier.

Tips - Go to sunset rock if you can find it around sunset. Bring a glass of wine. It is absolutely gorgeous and you get a view of the entire vineyard. Its only a 5 minute walk away, but it can be very difficult to find the trail. Good luck.

Also, I agree with others that the temperature in the studio is a bit extreme. They provide fans and I recommend you use them all day and then turn them off when you go to sleep (gets very cold by morning).

Living in a Vineyard

This is a good place to stay for a couple or small family wishing to experience country living. It is situated several miles from Cave Junction on a working ranch that has been converted to growing grapes. There are actually several vineyards on the property. Visitors are free to wander the grounds as they wish as long as they close all gates to help keep the deer away from the vines. Expect gravel roads, a profusion of bird and animal life, starry skies and a great deal of peace and quiet. The contrast between the vineyards and the surrounding forested hills is beautiful.

The Weaver's House is physically attached to a barn where the field laborers reside. They are quiet and friendly, but you will hear vehicles coming and going - driving right past the living room windows -- in the early morning.

We had a few issues with the cottage -- 2 of the 4 stove burners worked, and one day there were wasps in the house (which the owner promptly dealt with). It was a hot weekend when we arrived, and due to a lack of air conditioning and limited window ventilation, we ended up sleeping downstairs in the hide-a-bed. Closing the vertical blinds during the day to keep the sun out helps.

The loft is cozy, but expect steep, narrow stairs to access it. Kids would love it up there. We left our roller bags downstairs. The simple addition of a sturdy bannister would be a big plus.

All told, this is a neat little cottage on a working vineyard and in many ways it was a bargain. It was very clean. The log framework and wood stove create a very cabin-like feeling that fits the setting quite well. If you like rustic settings and don't mind foregoing some of the conveniences of the suburbs, then the Weaver House would be an interesting place to stay.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and feedback. I always appreciate it. We have fixed the burners, I had no idea they were not all working. Thank you for the heads up. We are also going to install a banister on the stairway. I hope you had safe travels home and your vacation was all that you hoped it would be. Thanks again.
