I am an author-educator who lives in the Finger Lakes Region raising my beautiful children with an even more beautiful wife. We live minutes from the Guest House and I teach in Watkins Glen. We take pride in our property and are responsive to any of our renters' needs as we try to accommodate the space and privacy our clients seek on getaways. Since we are local, we deal with our guests directly – from key exchanges, to cleaning, to repairs, and anything in between. All of our properties are fully furnished and have all the amenities of home. Stay awhile, won't you?
Travis Durfee purchased this house in 2008
The Guest House is a great big space for family and friends reunions in the heart of the Finger Lakes. We can sleep 17 with great privacy on a quiet one-way street. Multiple bathrooms and all the comforts of home.
I will try to sum this up: quiet, clean, full kitchen, BBQ on patio, 2 bathrooms..yes 2 bathrooms!!!, too many TV channels to watch and get this- full size laundry machines!!! Oh and I forgot, in the middle of Watkins Glen... All restaurants within short walk... the Glen itself is about a 2.5 minute walk. Owner answers the phone every time on first few rings... I have stayed here a few times so this is why I know this to be true. I could go on... coffee machine..microwave...full size fridge... starting to get the picture??? My Fiance Irina loves it here too!!! For us, this is the only place to stay in Watkins Glen...oh ps the racetrack is a short drive up the hill for you racers and fans alike... Enjoy!!!
We rented this home (both sides) for our family vacation hoping to spend a week together with our children and grandchildren. There were 8 adults and 6 children under the age of 5 years. Pulling up to the front of the home and seeing 4 sets of steps going up to the house was a surprise to us as there were no pictures of stairs in the website photos. The advertisement of 2 decks with grills lead us also to believe there would be a yard for the children. The decks were small and narrow and the only yard was the front which was a steep hill leading to the road. The front porch was small with only 3 plastic chairs so we could not all sit outside together unless we sat on the steps or the front lawn which overlooked a vacant parking lot. The house was clean and we had plenty of sleeping area and room to sit and dine. The only access to each side was to go out onto the porch so it was difficult to always keep track of the children. This house would be nice for a short get together, however not ideal to rent for a week of family vacation. We ended up leaving early. The playgrounds and Clute Park were a short drive from the house. We liked that we could walk to the State Park and several restaurants. I would recommend this house for large groups of adults wanting to get together. I would not recommend it to a large family with small children who are looking for a week of spending time together as a family.
The Madison Guest House was a great place to stay during our four day vacation in Watkins Glen. Our unit had three bedrooms and offered more than enough room for our family of six. The listing was very accurate and the property was clean and well maintained. Travis, the owner, was especially accommodating and gave us a personal walk through upon our arrival. He also stocked the kitchen with fresh fruit, milk, juice, english muffins which was great for a quick breakfast before exploring the area. The growler of locally brewed beer was a special treat! We would highly recommend this property to others visiting the area.
Our family enjoyed the large half of the house, very spacious, clean and within walking distance to waterfront, water falls and cute town. Location convenient to wineries, cider distillers, cheese farms, the Eastern part of Finger Lakes. Manager was helpful in explaining house and town, and he filled the refrig full for breakfasts. Seneca Harbor Lake is awesome, and the desserts are top class and not to be missed.
To celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary we wanted a reunion with our children and grandchildren, all of whom do not live near us. What a wonderful time we all had at Madison House! Because there were 17 of us we used the entire house. Both refrigerators were stocked with fresh fruit and juice. On the counters we found fresh bagels and coffee. The house was very clean and near many great restaurants where we had our meals. We could also walk to the lake and the State Park. We couldn't have been more pleased with the house, location and especially the gracious hospitality of Travis and his wife. I would recommend Madison House and would be very happy to return there in the future.
With hopes this helps you:
Positives: Very Clean. Adequately furnished with suitable amenities.
Good customer service.
Negatives: Entirely TOO NOISY! Neighbors to left of house (as you view from
the street) were outside yelling, carrying on till 3am, Sunday morning.
Residents in attached duplex were loud on Friday night but to their
credit did come over and asked such, thereafter quieting, however
Saturday night it resumed again.
Based upon the above we could NOT recommend this lodging to a friend or relative.
Again, with hopes this helps your future lodgings,
Lou and Joyce Fratangelo
While there are more steps from the road to the front door than meet the eye in the photo, access was safe and easy with a hand rail at the ready. Everything is CLEAN. The LV offers ample seating; there's a fair size TV, a DVD, and a VHS player. The DR seats six with spare chairs for more. The kitchen is spacious and stocked with flatware, plates, cups, and glasses. Breakfast of juice and bagels were supplied; coffee and creamer were, too. Beds (made up with linens, blankets, and pillows) were comfortable; towels and washclothes were in both downstairs and upstairs bathrooms. This was a wonderful retreat for our ChickFest 2014! Thank you, Travis.
The Guest House is conveniently located in the heart of historic Watkins Glen, one block from the start/finish line of the original Grand Prix Track and within walking distance of Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen State Park, restaurants, antique/novelty shops, miniature golf course, board walk, Racing Museum, movie theater, children's parks, and wine tasting. Centered on the Finger Lakes and Seneca Lake Wine Trails, we are also minutes from the famous hiking and biking trails of the Finger Lakes and Sugar Hill Forests and Watkins Glen International Speedway. Elmira, Corning, and Ithaca museums, colleges and culture are a short drive.
