I am a nurse, photographer & writer. I've travelled the world in my lifetime and lived in unusual and intriquing places. I settled in Kauai a few years back because i found it to be a ' sacred world apart'. I lived here with my daughter until life and the mainland called to her.
The home is in a special area known by the locals to have ' good mana'. So when I say it is whispered that dreams can come true here, I am serious, if you can tune in that is.
Although the house was eventually too big for me alone, I choose to stay here and share the magic it offers. I have rented it now for almost 8 years and have met vacationers from all around the world and every walk of life. . Its magic seems to attract , for the most part, unique and delightful people and I feel blessed by that.
The tranquility of the property and the gentle sounds of water and birds make writing and daydreaming easy. The local people are full of life and heart. You can learn the meaning of aloha here just by hanging out with them.
In my travels I was drawn to the richness of life, the multifacited human experience, so Kauai has been perfect for me. Aparently it is one of the most diversely populated places in America.
Hanalei is not for those who seek a bland, homogenous experience. I say that to warn off any travellers who would fare better the resort hotel vacation.
This is a safe place, probably as safe as any you can find, but it is not sterile. Someone might yell at you when you '' hog' the bridge, and once in awhile you hear a wild boar hunt way off in the jungle or a sky shaking thunderstorm passes through , leaving us sparkling clean and wide awake.
My life has not always been easy but it has been a good teacher. It has taught me to be open to it, to be more, rather than less, to hear the whole forest of birds sing and not miss out because I'm irritated by one rooster's morning crow. Kauai is perfect for that kind of ' adventure' . It is saturated with sacredness.
Dawn McConnell purchased this house in 2004
We choose this property because I was very ill when I moved to Kauai and needed a place to try and heal. I immedately knew that this place was special and if I could recover anywhere it would be here. Within months my health began to improve and now 10 years later I am healthy again. I know in my heart of hearts it was because of the magic that is here.
I enjoy all the benefits that I have mentioned already. I forgot to mention though that this place is never without a story, a new screen play or a new experience of some multileveled kind. If you are a photographer you will never lack the perfect picture. They are constantly unfolding everywhere. If you want to be part of the community here you can get involved. There is a lot going on to get involved in. There is an ongoing development and encouragement towards sustainable living and best of all there is a spark of a movement back to the old ways of Ohana ( shared living and caring) kuleana (respect and responsibilty) and aloha..which is heart.
We REALLY enjoyed your " treehouse" Sitting on the lanai during the rain or waking to a rainbow just outside our window was extremely enjoyable. Or fav place to eat was the dolphin ( their fish tacos are to die for) but having our own little Hawiian BBQ downstairs was also fun and tasty. The most amazing hike we have ever been on was the Kalalau trail. LONG Day but TOTALLY worth it! The St Regis brunch is delicious ( especially when you add passion fruit or guava mimosas) and has the best view for any meal. We loved playing with your kitties and loved discovering wildlife here. Swimming with the turtles " so totally rocks " ( as Crush would say) Thanks and aloha..
My friend and I stayed in the upstairs unit. Views were amazing and the place was very clean and nicely decorated. Kitchen and living areas are very spacious and comfortable and the laundry facilities downstairs were conveniently located. Dawn the proprietor/owner was extremely friendly and helpful. Would definitely consider returning in the future.
The Red Ginger is a special place. The natural sounds of the island you wake up to and go to bed with are so beautiful. The view you wake up to will certainly start each day of your stay as something special. It's a great place to come back to after a day at the beach or hiking to enjoy the evening on the lanai planning the next day. If you want great dining try Postcards or Bouchons in Hanalei. Dawn is such a caring and gracious host, she is always interested in how your day went. This is the third time my wife and I have stayed with Dawn and we would highly recommend that you come and enjoy the special place she has made here on Kauai.
We spent a week with Dawn at Red Ginger and it was better than any medicine! I'd had a long illness and no place could have soothed my soul like this lovely house and the gorgeous surroundings. We spent many nights on the lanai with a pitcher of something cool and fruity (and just a bit of rum) never tiring of the loveliness all around us. Our days were full of beaches, caves, mountains and much more, but at night we came home to our jungle paradise.
The house sits up high and there are incredible views from any window.....and there are windows everywhere. It's furnished with anything you might need or want including a massage chair that my husband and I fell in love with.
Then there is Jimmy! He is a sweet little tabby cat that keep watch over his domain. He never bothers you, but is willing to take all the love you're willing to give. He just wouldn't stay in my suitcase when we packed to leave!!!
Thank you, Dawn, for letting us share your little slice of heaven.
Such a beautiful, amazing place to wake up in for 2 whole weeks! We thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous scenery and the laid back vibe of Hanalei. Short drives to perfect beaches for snorkeling, hiking, and good food! We love how Dawn has made each space a peaceful place of it's own. So very quite. And the outdoor tigerwood shower makes you feel like you're in the most exotic place in the world! My husband and I can't wait to return, and call this place home for another 2 weeks! Thanks so very much Dawn!
I loved my recent stay at this wonderful home & property, finding it an oasis of comfort, beauty, and regeneration.
It came as a bit of a surprise to realize that considering all the activities of my Hawaiian holiday, the most favourite & memorable times of my visit to Kauai were the hours spent contentedly savouring life at the retreat-like Red Ginger. It provides an atmosphere of relaxation, ease, & contentment, & was a welcome relief at times from the day's busy-ness. It seems to invite a peaceful, gentler, slower way of doing life.
I returned home with many sweet memories of times at the Red Ginger spent enjoying a variety of simple pleasures- leisurely meals, good conversation & fine coffee on the outdoor lanai, being cooled by the ever present soft tropical breezes, & taking in the sounds & sights of the surrounding tropical jungle valley. Lovely too, was the nightly star-gazing, the deep, restful sleeps in the comfy bed, the lush greens & rich textures & colours of the tropical gardens, the outdoor shower & the many opportunities for photography. Simply sublime!
The location, (handy for many activities straight out of the Kauai guidebook), was only a quick drive from many area beaches, the restaurants & shops of nearby Hanalei, the Kalalau trail & NaPali Coast, etc. (don't miss the takeout burritos from Red Hot Mama's just down the road) The home's location made for a good base from which to venture further afield and explore other areas of the island (the galleries of Hanapepe, Lihue, & the busier more developed South Shore attractions/Poipu, etc.)
Couldn't have been happier & left feeling renewed & refreshed - highly recommend!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful home!
Down the end of a quiet 1/2 mile residential road is Dawn's peaceful, charming home! We hoped for a remote quiet space with easy access to various north shore beaches and restaurants, and thats exactly what we got. The space was clean, functional, and provided just about everything we would want, including the ability to do laundry, and beyond, the lovely sounds of morning rain from a bedroom high above the forest floor with breathtaking views, tropical birds, and just outside, a pair of friendly cats waiting for our emergence each morning.
Of our 11 days, we spent 9 in the main unit, Red Ginger, and, due to having booked out trip after others had spoken for Red Ginger later in our trip, 2 in the smaller cottage space beneath. Both were lovely, and equally outfitted, though the views from Red Ginger were more spectacular.
Dawn as well was available as needed, but always discreet, and always helpful in making our stay as wonderful as she could.
Though not on the beach, these accommodations offer something a beachfront property could not, that we really wanted. The quiet of a remote retreat, high on a hillside, with gorgeous views, and deep jungle sounds, and lots of privacy, without losing easy access to Hanalei and environs. Add to that the fabulous oversize outdoor shower, and we were very happy!
A true Zen retreat! The magnificent Kuan Yin sculpture was a great clue! - )
