2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, sleeps 4
In the heart of Umbria, near the ancient city of Perugia, Villa Aureli stands like a jewel in a hilly countryside, where lines of pine trees mark the horizon. The villa dates back to the 18th century when Count Sperello Aureli restored a 16th century tower adorning it with frescoes, prints, and painted furniture. Among the wonders of the house, the colourful Vietri ceramic floors, different in each room, the bright fist floor gallery, the garden ornamental walls and the orangerie. The present owner, Sperello di Serego Alighieri, works on astrophysics at the Firenze Observatory. He offers two apartments where the guests enjoy the rare beauty of the villa and two apartments in the house of the former gardener Adolfo. All the guests have private spaces in the park, with wonderful views on the hilly Umbrian countryside. The pool (12x4), made out the ancient water cistern, is set in a sheltered area of the park, with southern exposure.
The House of Adolfo.
During World War II Villa Aureli was used as headquarters by the German and then by the allied troops. Adolfo Guelfi was the faithful gardener who saved all the furniture and precious objects contained in the villa by walling them up in a large room. The House, built in XVIII century, is adjacent to the orangerie; it has been recently restored respecting the original features. It has air-co and modern facilities, and original furniture from the villa. Direct access to the garden and to the swimming pool, and private spaces for open-air dining.
This apartment (80 sq.m) has an independent entrance via the eastern facade of Adolfo's House and an external staircase, and is located on the first floor. It has a a private courtyard, kitchen/living room with flat-screen TV and DVD player. The kitchen has a microwave oven, a fridge with small freezer, and a dishwasher. The lovely blue bedroom has a king-size bed and the other room has two beds, which can be joined if necessary. Both rooms have a nice view over the courtyard of the ancient well and wood oven. Comfortable bathroom with bath and shower. Hairdryer. Direct access to the garden and to the swimming pool, and private spaces for open-air and candlelight dining in the garden and in the courts. Beautiful ancient paintings on the walls. Free wireless connection.
Fully equipped laundry with washing machine and iron in the basement.
Note: by unlocking a communication door the two apartments in Adolfo's House can be joyned and host a large group of friends.
At Villa Aureli we try to preserve the environment and to offer our guests a stay consistent with the ecosystem. When the villa and the garden were made some centuries ago, there where no electricity nor gas, and chemical fertilizers did not exist. Both were therefore built in order to minimize energy needs. The thick walls isolate the rooms from cold in winter and from heat in summer. The water pipes collecting rain from the roofs and leading it to the orangerie, to the fountain and to the water tank of the vegetable garden used to collect water for the garden without energy consumption. Modern life needs extra energy, so we provided to install a system of photovoltaic solar panels that covers the needs of all the apartments, including air-conditioning in Adolfo’s House, where the walls are not as thick as in the Villa.
All guests enjoy large and different spaces for their privacy and quietness.

About Sperello di Serego Alighieri
I had the chance to grow up in Villa Aureli. Now I am an astrophysicist working at the Arcetri Observatory in Firenze, but spend most of the week-ends at Villa Aureli. If you are interested in my activity, please see my web site www.arcetri.astro.it/~sperello
Why Sperello di Serego Alighieri chose Perugia
Villa Aureli is a classified historical monument that was passed down through several ancient families: Gregori, Aureli, Alfani, Meniconi Bracceschi and finally di Serego Alighieri. It remained extraordinarily unchanged in time and spirit.
