COLONIAL MASTERPIECE IN CENTRO

Merida House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, Sleeps 6

'You Never Know What's Behind Closed Doors'. A familiar phrase in Merida and one that truly captures the spirit of our house. Designed by the brilliant architect Henry Ponce, our home features the grandeur and elegance of a colonial home located in one of the best neighborhoods in the historical Centro district. The open courtyard in the center of the house is the first image you see when you open the doors. Situated around the courtyard is the pool , the indoor/outdoor dining/ living areas and the kitchen. A visual feast from anyplace you sit whether you are looking at the hand-cut stone wall, the spectacular water features or the grand arches that surround the courtyard.

A perfect place to entertain! Sitting on the terrace upstairs is another favorite place for us in the evening. There is always a breeze blowing from the north, music from the park and the sound of horses trotting by pulling a carriage. The master suite is upstairs also and it overlooks the courtyard as well as the upstairs terrace. It is a very restful room decorated with fine furniture and the master bath is luxurious. For those wanting to watch TV we have a large flat screen TV with the American Dish network, a DVD player, sound system and CD player. Once you open the door and discover how comfortable and spacious this house is you won't want to leave but when you do the restaurants, shops, parks and Paseo Montejo, the most beautiful boulevard in the city are right outside your front door. Enjoy !

Suitability:
  • not suitable for children
  • pets not allowed
  • non smoking only

We have always enjoyed traveling and exploring different parts of Mexico but have never felt more at home than being in Merida. I am retired from the local school district and my husband continues to do private consultant work. We love walking through the various neighborhoods of Merida, meeting new friends and finding new restaurants. We also enjoy taking day trips to explore ruins, cenotes or finding new haciendas.

John Burrell purchased this house in 2011

My husband appreciates colonial architecture so we came to Merida to see some homes for sale and ended up buying one. We both felt very comfortable in this city.

A Very Special House in a Very Special City

  • 4 of 5
My husband, 12-year old daughter and I arrived on Christmas night and were let in by the property manager's daughter, Andy. She was very kind, spoke fluent English and helped us order a taxi to have dinner outside the city. The house is stunning - and huge - beautifully restored with gorgeous tile and woodworking. It has all the modern amenities one wishes while traveling (fully updated kitchen, air conditioning in the bedrooms), though be prepared for tepid shower water (never hot) and fairly low water pressure. We had a few minor inconveniences (the clothes dryer was broken and the satellite didn't work). A repair-man came to fix the latter and it was actually nice to not have a tv on for a few days. Merida is enchanting. We were within walking distance of the Zocalo, Paseo de Montejo and our favorite little square near the Hotel Casa San Angel where we ate many breakfasts because the coffee was amazing. Without exception, everyone we encountered in Merida was warm and welcoming. We immersed ourselves in the Yucatan culture with day trips to Uxmal and Chichen Itza and spent a glorious day at the Los Dos Cooking school learning to prepare a traditional Maya meal. We chose to not rent a car and instead relied on taxis which were very inexpensive (compared to L.A. & NYC) and easy to order even during the holidays. All in all we had a wonderful visit and will definitely return.

Owner's Response: Thank you Sharon for taking the time to review your stay at our house. It does help us fine tune the things that are important to guests. I do want to apologize for the dryer not working. We will be at the house Feb first and will purchase a new dryer as parts for that dryer are hard to find in Mexico. I am happy that you enjoyed the wonderful city of Merida and hope that you can get back soon. Thanks again, John

Merida Colonial

The pictures did not do the rental justice - it was beautiful and much larger than expected - the rooms and roof top deck were huge. The property was clean and fairly well maintained, and had plenty of dishes, blender etc.. The property manager was very helpful, and was easy to reach. The property was in easy walking distance of the central plaza, and other destinations, and many excellent restaurants - an excellent location. I would recommend the property. The city felt very safe - even walking late at night.

Magical moments in Merida!

  • 5 of 5
We had never done a VRBO and we were Very pleased with the entire experience. Our home was beautiful! Andy was very helpful; her suggestions for good restaurants were right on the money. Told us where we could get some groceries; even offered to shop for us before our arrival but we wanted the whole experience. I would suggest however, forgo Walmart and travel I bit further to their Mega store for your groceries. Cleaner, better choices, better food! They made this vacation of relaxation and comfort a true success for my husband and I and our friends. Roadways to Anywhere....a breeze. Would recommend a car rental for your stay though. Things are too spread out. One of the other really nice things is that they provided great materials for day trips, maps, things to do, sights to see, etc.

A True Cultural Immersion

  • 5 of 5
Our Merida vacation was everything we hoped for! The town is lovely, rich with sights and sounds, and the people went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Our house provided the perfect home base for daily excursions and wanderings. It is in easy walking distance to restaurants, cultural venues, transportation to outlying areas, and the city center.

The house itself was absolutely beautiful. It was exactly as the pictures promised. The living areas were spacious and fully appointed, the beds magnificently comfortable, and the terrace provided a breathtaking view of the night sky. The water in the pool was a bit chilly and made me wonder if I would enjoy a pool that was totally outdoors. And even though it was very hot during our stay (in the 90s most days), the house stayed perfectly cool with just the fans. Air conditioning was not necessary at all.

Our hostess provided assistance with getting acclimated to the house, navigating the city, and arranging our transportation when we had to depart. We had everything we needed without any problem. The only thing that was not to our liking with the house was that the pool would cycle on in the middle of the night for what we presumed was self-cleaning. It was quite noisy and woke us up every night, and the first time it happened we were taken quite by surprise.

Owner's Response: We're pleased you enjoyed your time in Merida and our home. We will change the clock on the timer so the pool gets cleaned during the day. If your travel plans include Merida in the future, please consider staying at our house again. Thanks, John and Mary

A Destination in Itself

  • 5 of 5
From the moment you walk through the front door you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the architecture, the design, layout, use of space, and tasteful decor of this wonderful house. The pictures give only a small glimpse of the real gem you will find upon your arrival. It is very conveniently located within walking distance of major attractions and restaurants. My wife and I spent 9 days in this beautiful home and found it difficult to leave, even to see the sights of this charming city. We found the neighborhood to be very friendly and safe, and enjoyed the local foods of the Yucatan offered by the vendors in the Santa Ana Park, within two blocks of the house. There are too many attractions to mention, but the highlights for us would be the cathedrals, day trips to the beaches, cenotes, and ruins, and the fantastic little restaurant at the Hotel Casa San Angel, just around the corner from the house. I especially want to thank Andrea and Andy who were so attentive to our needs during our stay. Andy went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and to give us any assistance we needed during our stay. We are already thinking about our next trip to Merida and will hopefully stay here again. We highly recommend this Colonial Masterpiece in Cetro, Merida.

AMAZING HOUSE IN AN AMAZING CITY!

  • 5 of 5
What an incredible house! I had such a great time visiting Merida and staying in this beautiful, comfortable space. Each morning I'd wake and enjoy coffee and reading on the rooftop - taking in the sounds of the waking city. The location of the house is perfect - just a few blocks from Paseo Montejo and a few blocks from the Centro. As a single woman, I felt surprisingly safe walking everywhere, even at night! I spent the mornings exploring the markets, nearby coffee shops, restaurants, etc. So much to see. This gorgeous home is the perfect home base for discovering the city. In the early afternoon, I'd return and take a dip in the pool, read, and relax. After a siesta and cocktails on the rooftop patio, the nightlife and restaurants in Merida were just the perfect way to spend the evening. The owners or property managers will let you know the best places to eat and drink in Merida.

Beyond the beauty of the house from paintings to furniture, landscaping and water features, the home is incredibly comfortable. The temperature was always perfect - with all of the fans, I never even needed the air conditioner. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were clean and efficient. The kitchen was very accommodating (imagine preparing a meal while looking out a tropical garden and beautifully illuminated pool).

I truly loved every minute of my visit and am looking forward to my return. I have stayed in many places all over the world, but this city and especially this house were spectacular.
