Cottage is Ok But Buyer Beware!
My husband and I stayed at this cottage this past summer. The cottage was adequate for our needs. It is centrally located in a quiet neighborhood, yet close to Route 1 and about a mile from the ocean. We did find some issues with the property, such as there was no microwave, no toaster, no air conditioning, a television - but no cable. When we arrived on Saturday, the lawn looked like it hadn't been mowed for a few weeks and the house had a stale, musty odor. We also encountered some problems with the property owner, both before and during our stay. He never sent receipts for the deposit or the remaining balance, and since his only accepted method of payment was by bank check, we didn't know whether or not he had received our checks. He also did not provide us with a signed copy of the rental agreement. We had to continuously contact him by email or phone to get any information from him. When we spoke with him, his attitude was rude and condescending.
We called him when we arrived to complain about the condition of the lawn and to ask what was wrong with the TV. That was when he told us that there was no cable service, but there was a DVD player and we could rent movies at Redbox. He spoke rudely at this time also.
After our stay, we had to contact him once again to request that our security deposit be returned to us, and at that time he accused us of causing damage to the cottage, and threatened to withhold some of the deposit. When we advised him that we had not caused the damage, and that, in fact, we had left the cottage in better condition than it was when we arrived and had pictures to prove it, he returned the full security deposit to us.
We would not rent this property again, nor would we recommend it to a friend or relative as we would not want anyone to be subjected to the owner's poor customer service skills.
We did make the most of our week in Wells, and enjoyed the beach and the many area attractions. We will definitely return to the area, but will find another place to stay.
Owner's Response: This review is erroneous on many fronts, and it is new news to me that the guest had issues with no microwave, toaster, or air conditioning. The guest did not state there was a problem until now and I do not state in my listing, verbally, or via email that I have any of those three things. I truly disdain negativity and malice so I won't offer argumentative response to this vitriol. I do admit that the lawn had not been mowed on schedule, but when I found out about the state of the lawn I contacted the lawn care company and they rectified the issue as soon as possible. I do not state that I have cable on HomeAway, so I do not assume guests believe that I have cable at the cottage.
My cottage is beautiful, a tribute to my mother who enjoyed Maine for so many years, and I honored her by purchasing this cottage in her memory and providing the best service possible. I am always open to thoughtful, friendly suggestions.
I am more than willing to allay any fears that this review has caused, including forwarding the email exchange concerning the security deposit and admission of damage with all header information to show that the email is true and not edited.
