About Betty Mallon

My husband and I are native Alexandrians and have owned this home for many years. We purchased it so my mother could move from her 3 story townhouse to one level living. She enjoyed many years there before moving in with my sister.

Recently we decided it was the perfect spot for vacationers as it is in a wonderful, quiet community; yet is within walking distance of everything.

I actually grew up in the neighborhood, attended the local elementary school and now our grandson is attending the same school.

We live just a short 5 minute drive from the house and can make ourselves available if there is a problem.

Betty Mallon purchased this bungalow in 1988

Why Betty Mallon chose Alexandria

I know how many people visit the Washington DC area each year, and I wanted to provide a more home-like setting for people who don't like the bustle of hotels. Old Town Alexandria and Del Ray are right on the doorstep of this cute bungalow, and with DC just a short distance away, I thought it was the perfect pied a terre!

What makes this bungalow unique

This is a single family detached home so you don't have go worry about your noise level of coming or going as there is no unit above, below or beside you. You have your own washer and dryer and yard to use for outdoor grilling and dining. There is plenty of room to stretch out in this little home, and the privacy it affords, allows visitors to really 'live' in the DC area. Walking to shops and restaurants, theater, boating, metro and the like are just the icing on the cake.

Cute Retreat

  • 5 of 5
My husband and two teenage daughters recently enjoyed our stay in this home. Not only was it well appointed but it was extremely clean with a well stocked linen closet. Nothing was overlooked including the scented candle! It was within an easy 15 walk to the Metro. We also used a local cab company and they arrived both times within 10 minutes. Everything was modern, tasteful and it worked! I would much rather stay in a home like this than a hotel room. I also appreciated how quiet it was. If our travels bring us back around the Washington area I would book this home again!

Very nice clean house!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed in this house for two weeks recently. It was even better than pictured and described! The beds were great and the entire house very clean and comfortable. It is well-stocked with linens, food staples, etc. We especially enjoyed walking the neighborhood and eating at local restaurants (Monroe's was especially good for dinner and Mancinni's excellent for breakfast).

We were in the area to visit family and look at property for possible purchase. After we signed the rental contract, we learned that the owner of the house is also a realtor. She knows the area well, provided us with thorough information and was most helpful .

We found a great rental property and a knowledgable realtor. We recommend both!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at this house was absolutely delightful for our family of four, including middle school-aged kids. The owners were very quick to respond to emails while planning our visit. They have just the right amount of necessities available for a comfortable stay. The home is nicely decorated and very comfortable. The neighborhood can't be beat. We walked to shops and the metro daily. We hope to stay again and will recommend this sweet home to friends headed to DC and Virginia.

Great house

  • 5 of 5
The house was perfect for us. Clean, nice living room, kitchen, laundry all worked well. The location is fantastic, walk to lots of restaurants in del Ray and a 5-10 min walk to 2 train stations. Landlords were attentive and accommodating.

alexandria property

My kids and I had a two week trip to DC and the house was a perfect place for us to come back to everyday after touring the sites in DC. It was clean and comfortable and the owner's even added a dvd player to keep my kids happy at night.
We loved the beds and sat in the back yard and watched the squirrels and birds play in the morning. Grilled steaks on the BBQ
The laundry downstairs was also a night touch and it was complete with laundry soap so we didn't have to buy any..
thanks for making our trip feel like home.

Great House for a Family Visit to DC

  • 5 of 5
My family had a great trip to the DC area, and this bungalow in Alexandria worked out very well for us. One of our kids uses a wheelchair, and though the house is not wheelchair accessible, per se, once you get up the front steps, the entire living space is on one level, which made it easy for us.

We drove to DC, and parking was as easy as could be. We always parked directly in front of the house. We drove into the city a couple of days (especially when visiting the attractions that weren't right downtown), and we rode the Metro a couple of days. If the weather was nice, and you were ambulatory, it would be an easy 10-15 minute walk to the Braddock Road Metro stop. Because of the wheelchair, we chose to drive to Huntington (about 10 minutes), where there is a ton of parking for $4.75/day.

We're big fans of Trader Joe's, and there is one just over a mile from the house (with free validated parking), so we did all our food shopping there. There's a CVS just a few blocks away, and a fair amount of shopping in Alexandria if you need anything else.

The whole rental process went very smoothly, with leases being exchanged via email - we only used the post office for the checks. The house was ready when Betty said it would be, and moving in and out was very smooth.

We would absolutely consider staying here again, and since there is so much to do in the DC metro area, we just might be back!

Owner's Response: We have been so fortunate to have such wonderful guests, including the latest family. I am looking into seeing if there is a way we could build a "portable" ramp that we could have available at the house to make it easier for family members who may have mobility restrictions. This could potentially help young and old alike.

Car: not necessary

Our Guest Cottage sits right between two very desirable parts of the historic City of Alexandria. Within a 15 to 20 minute walk, one can enjoy numerous, excellent restaurants, shops, antique stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, cleaners and two Metro stops. Movie theaters, malls, public tennis courts and community recreation center are all within a 10 minute drive.

From the Braddock Road Metro and the King Street Metro, you can be in Washington, DC, Arlington, VA or Maryland in just minutes. The Metro also takes you directly to Reagan National Airport.

The home sits on a quiet one-way residential street that has tons of free parking if you do have an automobile. There are two bedrooms and one bath. Built in 1926, the home's bath is fairly original with a deep, cast iron tub with a shower ring. Because of its depth, it can be somewhat of a challenge to anyone with mobility restrictions. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, stove, toaster oven, blender and microwave. There is no dishwasher however. Additionally, there is a gas grill for warm weather grilling. The washer and dryer are housed in the basement.

The house has a TV and has internet access as well. Enjoy all the historic sights of Alexandria, George Washington's Estate of Mt. Vernon, Woodlawn, Gunston Manor, Arlington Cemetery and the endless choices of free museums in Washington, DC.
