Overview

Saint Georges du Vievre Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Quiet self-catering gite for a romantic couple

Our half-timbered, self-catering cottage, which we use regularly ourselves, is set on a gentle incline in its own half-acre field, bordered by our 2 acre forest. It's perfect for walks and cycling straight from the door. People who've stayed here say it's like a Hansel and Gretel cottage. It's at the end of a track, surrounded by valleys, trees and meadows as far as the eye can see - yet less than an hour from Rouen, Honfleur and the sea. Pont-Audemer, the 'Venice of the North', with its canals and medieval buildings, is just 10 miles away. And it's only 2 kilometres from the historic village of St-Georges-du-Vievre, which has shops, post office bank and bars. The cottage is small and simply furnished, with all the basic essentials. The living room has a beamed ceiling and wood-burner. The shower-room/WC is on the ground floor. And up steep stairs, into the roof space, with beams and 2 windows, is the double bed . Outside is a patio with furniture and a forest view to die for. Sit here with a glass of wine and listen to the birds. Bliss.

Suitability:

The Perfect Week

  • 5 of 5
We've stayed in many cottages and this has to rank as one of the most picturesque, set in a beautifully secluded valley and having everything that you would want for that Perfect break. The cottage oozes character and to sit on the terrace with a glass of wine as the sun sets listening to the owls in the surrounding woods was magical.
We walked and cycled in the surrounding area, visited the nearby coastal towns and felt so relaxed that at the end of the week it was a wrench to leave. The only fault we could find was that we didn’t book to stay longer, Heaven !

Owner's Response: I'm always so happy to hear that people love our little cottage. It's like being told your baby is beautiful! That the holiday-makers found it more beautiful than other places where they have stayed - well that's quite an accolade. We certainly chose the cottage because it's in such a lovely location, on its own, with a view across the valley to the forest. It's good to hear also that it's a place where you can unwind, as well as explore the many places of interest - town, country, village or seaside - that are within easy driving distance.

Escape to the Countryside

  • 5 of 5
For a perfect escape from the noise and stress of crowded England a week at this secluded cottage is the answer. This part of Normandy was new to us and did not disappoint with plenty of pretty towns and villages to visit. For us the greatest delight was the peace and quiet of the cottages location. Surrounded by fields and woodland the distractions of normal day to day living soon fade away as you watch the sun go down.

Owner's Response: More and more holiday-makers have told us that the cottage has been the perfect escape for them. It's true that it's in the country in a quiet location on its own, with views across the meadow to a wooded valley beyond. If you can be bothered to get up and go anywhere at all, there are several pretty towns and villages to visit. To name just two of them: Pont Audemer, is the so-called 'Venice of the North' because of its canals around the Old Town, and Bec Hellouin is classified as one of the 'plus beaux villages de France'. Dave and I are catching the ferry to Normandy tomorrow. We never get fed up with the cottage - and that's after 25 years of staying there regularly.

Lovely country retreat

  • 4 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay in the gite, it was in the middle of nowhere, no mobile reception, no TV and no noise - perfect! The local area is one of the prettiest we have been to in Normandy and we really enjoyed the cycle path near to Le Bec Hellouin. Autumn arrived whilst we were there, so the countryside was especially pretty, unfortunately so did the rain, so we weren't able to enjoy the outside terrace as much as we had hoped. However the upside of rain in August was that we were able to enjoy the fire every evening and having stayed at many other gites where we have paid for wood the free supply was much appreciated. For us the only thing missing was somewhere comfortable to snuggle in front of the fire, the wicker chairs in the lounge area were not the most comfortable after a couple of hours of reading.

Owner's Response: Well, at least you know now that our cottage is in the middle of nowhere (the locals call it 'la vallee perdue' - the forgotten valley). To share a secret with you, you can get free WI-FI at the local tourist office in St Georges du Vievre, two miles away from the cottage. Once you have a personal code from them, you can get Wi-Fi when the tourist office is closed - by standing outside! No holiday in our area would be complete without a visit to the beautiful monastery at Le Bec Hellouin, which more than lives up to its official accolade as one of the 'plus beaux villages de France'. About the CHAIRS. This holiday-maker is the second person to say that the armchairs are not very comfortable. It's time there were replaced. I've already found something good on the internet.

Quiet and simple in a beautiful location.

  • 4 of 5
Small but adequate for 2 people, lovely views, walks and cycle rides nearby. Everything you need is provided and the cottage is clean and well maintained. The bed is very good but stairs are steep (take care after a few drinks). We had no problems with insects etc apart from a toad that decided to wander indoors. Overall, eexcellent value!

Owner's Response: What, only a mere toad as visitor! A few years ago, one holiday-maker described how the horse from the adjoining meadow decided to pop in - not Sultan or Monica, by the way, who are the current (well-behaved) horses. Today, you are more likely to see or hear buzzards and owls.

Perfect, rustic, off-grid, local holiday!

Was the listing description accurate regarding the location, layout, facilities, etc?
(Accurate description overall of location, layout, facilities etc.

The maps themselves should be more detailed to have actual real use, but we had no trouble finding it with our GPS unit, and could have found it without as well using only the description.)

Was the property clean, was it well-maintained?

(The property was clean, and it was well-maintained, considering though the age of the old Bakehouse.)

Did the owner or manager provide good customer service?

(The owner provided perfect professional and personal customer service)

Would you recommend this property to a friend or relative?

(We already recommended this to several friends, coworkers and family.)

What activities, attractions and restaurants did you like or dislike?

(Well, Caen is a must!
We also went to Monet's gardens, that was a very nice experience.
We went to Disneyland Paris as well, our 3rd time so, we mostly do that for the kids.)

Locally there is everything you need.
We had no trouble finding a Carrefour for our immediate overall needs.
But mostly we shopped from different local markets and shops.

They do not speak English, so practice your basic French.
Just learn the basics, express some basic kindness and humility and everything will be just fine.
You can get a long way with a smile, a merci, basic counting (un, deux, trois, quatre and cinq), basic hand gestures and a trés bien, and au revoir :)

We got more than we expected, and was positively overjoyed with our stay.

You have to not mind nature, as you are right in the middle of it. But the house is very well placed. The ground itself is lovely and well kept.

We will definitely be coming back to Normandy.
Only next time for more than a week since there is so many things to see.

We recommend taking a car as you could get kinda isolated without it.
But a pair of well trained bicyclers could also go for it, since the woods are ideal for off-road trecking, mountainbiking etc.

If you are a luxury kind of person, with a need for room-service and five star real estate. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU.

For everyone who is still reading, and in love with this place.

Go in peace.
Namaste.

(Treat it as your own, leave it better than you found it. Be the change, go with the flow....)

And remember folks "Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words." - ?

Owner's Response: What a thoughtful and useful review - and whacky with it! A bit like our cottage....? It's good to get confirmation that the area works for cyclists. The roads are quiet and just that bit hilly in places (not tooooo hilly, though) - just enough to keep you fit. It's true that our cottage is for lovers of the countryside, but there are also lots of things to do and see within easy driving distance.

Relaxation pure!

  • 5 of 5
A fantastic little cottage in the middle of pure nature and nonetheless close to many interesting destinations throughout the region. Perfect for those who whish to explore the normandy and stay in a quiet place at the same time. The cottage is really romantic, clean and equipped with all you need. Communication with the owner all by email, working very well. Definitely recommendable!
Only negative point to those who care: cell phone coverage is rather poor, if you are dependent on emails, etc.

Owner's Response: It's always good to know that holiday-makers like our cottage as much as we do - as owners, it's possible to be a bit biased! Martin is quite right in that, despite its hide-away location, there is plenty to do within easy driving distance - from Rouen, to Honfleur and the seaside. Even a day trip to Paris is possible by train. It's true that the cell/mobile phone coverage is not good at the actual cottage, but the Tourist Office in St Georges-du-Vievre nearby has free wifi. And here's a good tip, given to me by one of the charming tourist officers: once you are given your code, even when the Tourist Office is closed, you can use their wifi from just outside the building.

Our typical Normandy colombage cottage sits in splendid isolation at the end of a track, with a view across to the forest, a kilometre from the tiny hamlet of St-Benoist-des-Ombres. Unlike many holiday-lets, our rental charges are fully inclusive of cleaning and heating. It is one of only three properties in the valley known locally as 'La Vallee Perdue' because no one else knows it's there, it's so off the beaten track. It's 2 miles from the traditional village and food shops of St-Georges-du-Vievre, famous for being a Resistance stronghold during the 2nd World War. The nearest supermarkets are in BRIONNE (5 miles) and PONT-AUDEMER (10 Miles). But don't forget the open-air markets. ROUEN is less than an hour away, famous for its cathedral, painted so often by the Impressionist Monet, whose famous house and garden you can visit at GIVERNY. The ancient leisure port of HONFLEUR is a 50-minute drive away, with its attractive port and plethora of restaurants. Enjoy the sandy beaches of TROUVILLE, or have a flutter in the DEAUVILLE casino. Also within easy driving distance are several chateaux, museums, the PARC DE BRETONNE (including JUMIEGES), MONTFORT FOREST, the 'Cheese Trail' and the monastery you can visit at LE BEC HELLOUIN, one of the 'plus beaux villages de France'.
