El Guarda is a gorgeous 500 year old Cortijo in a lovely rural setting with stunning far-reaching views, conveniently located close to the whitewashed villages of Alcala del Valle, Setenil and Olvera, and within easy reach of one of Europe’s most beautiful historic towns, Ronda, which is only 30km away from us.

The history of the place dates back many centuries during which time it had several functions, more recently being the gate-house to a huge neighboring estate once owned by the bishop of Seville and the Duchess of Alba.

Between 2008 and 2011 the Cortijo was sympathetically and extensively restored, and modernized where needed, by excellent local artisans. Utilising reclaimed materials and with preserved antique features, combined with modern pieces of furniture and art, this tranquil retreat is a perfect example of an Andalucian ’finca’ - exuding true warmth and comfort, surrounded by the intoxicating peace of nature.

Set within 4 acres with magnificent unspoilt views, this welcoming authentic home offers guests the privilege of space, the luxury of privacy and the pleasure of great personal service. The five double en-suite guestrooms were all part of the original cortijo and thus differ substantially in terms of size and atmosphere. Every one is different. Every one is unique. At the same time, however, they share the same standard of tasteful decoration and quality. The majority boast their own private terrace, and many have a traditional working log-burners for those cozy evenings ’in’. A relaxing slumber is certain in Emperor or King-sized beds with top-quality mattresses selected for comfort, dressed in the finest Egyptian cotton. The bathrooms exemplify pure rustic luxury with either Victorian roll-top baths or large walk-in showers, and all combine classic fittings with a totally natural feel ... they are highly indicative of the owner’s commitment to working with the best local craftsmen. High pressure showers provide an energizing boost, whilst gorgeous towels, comfy bathrobes and high quality grooming products make bathing the pleasure it really should always be.

Through antique 'Ronda' chestnut double doors, guests enter a hugely impressive farmhouse kitchen / dining room with exposed beams and a high vaulted wooden ceiling. Truly a room for all seasons with a welcoming fireside sofa and chairs for guests to snuggle up to in winter, whilst at most times of the year the doors remain open to reveal the adjacent tranquil terrace. The kitchen also offers an honesty bar where guests can help themselves to a drink at any time of the day or night.

A separate and extremely characterful Sitting Room, with an antique log-burner and well-stocked library wall, gives guests the opportunity to sit down in the cool if they need respite from the Andalucían sun for a moment or two.

The owners live in a separate part of the cortijo and are happy to help out when needed/wanted with sorting out issues, but will normally only sleep at the property, this to ensure an optimal combination between service and privacy for our guests.

We are a Dutch couple - Miranda and Hans - that has spent the bigger part of our professional life in the Financial Industry and the Human Resources area. Miranda has also been working for a major Spanish hotel group as a Public Relation Officer on the Baleares.

We have traveled the world both professionally as well as for leisure and always felt that one day would like to own a small hospitality activity ourselves. Our dream was to find a spot where our guests could relax, enjoy the countryside and reload their batteries. In the same time it should be close enough to interesting places to visit without being bothered by it. Last but not least, being - lovers of old places ourselves - the house should have lots of character, inviting and warm.

After having looked in several countries around the world we came across El Guarda and fell in love with it straight away. We would love to share our excitement for the place and its surroundings with our guests and invite you to stay with us for some days when travelling through gorgeous Andalucía.

El Guarda is situated in the center of Andalusia.

This means that it is close to all the famous White Villages such as Setenil, Grazalema, Zahara and Olvera.

In terms of cities close by Ronda is the main attraction. Being one the three most popular Andalucian tourist attractions, along with Seville and Granada, Ronda retains much of its historic charm, particularly in the old town. It is famous worldwide for its dramatic escarpments and views, and for the deep El Tajo gorge which carries the Guadalevín river through its centre.

For nature lovers the National Parks of El Torcal, the Sierra de las Nieves and the Grazalema Park are close by and almost a must. Also quite interesting is a walk or a trip on horseback through the Via Verde in Olvera.

Golfers should try the course in the mountains of Antequera or - more chique maybe - one of the many and famous courses around Marbella.

For something completely different there is the Ascari race resort in 15 minutes distances away from us. It combines luxury with adrenaline. The racetrack is the longest in Spain totaling 5,425 meters.

Cars available for use at the Ascari track include: a Le Mans Race Car (LMP 900 two seater), Radical SR3’s, Reynard Chrysler single seaters, Lotus Elise race cars, a BMW 3 Compact and off-road buggies.

If that is not exiting enough there are more challenges in the neighbourhood like para penting and rock climbing.

Of course here is also the possibility to visit in a day trip some of the more ’famous’ Andalusian tourist attractions. One could consider Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Jerez and Cadiz.

  • Our two Classic Rooms are the smallest rooms that we have, but both of them have their own charme. The first one has a sleeping part of 15m2 and a spacious bathroom of 7m2 with a warm atmosphere and a big shower.The other one is a bit smaller with a sleeping part of a comparable size, but with a bit smaller bathroom. This room however has its own patio, where one can sit quite nicely. All our three Superior Rooms measure more than 40m2. The first one has a spacious bathroom with all amenities: Bath, shower, toilet, bidet and two sinks. In addition, the room has a pleasant outdoor seating and offers a completely walled patio of 15m2, completely private. The other room has a large bathroom with shower, toilet, bidet, double sink. The last one is on the first floor is therefore unfortunately not suitable for people with mobility mobility problems. This room has a double sink, a walk-in shower and toilet A 6th bedroom (superior) is available on request.

Notes:
We can provide a spanish speaking maid that cleans, makes breakfast and occasionally cooks dinner on request. Please contact us to discuss duties and frequency. Re Pool: we have a pool that has a depth of 1.40m to 1.90m so childeren should be able to swim. Re infirm and wheelchair users: the fact that El Guarda is an old renovated building means that it has lots of pebbles, steps and stairs, which might not create the optimal situation for people with walking problems, although they are more than welcome.
