Overview

Acadia National Park House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 2 baths, sleeps 4 (maybe 5)

Slate House, is a unique and intriguing post-and-beam artist's home, located in a private wooded setting just around the corner from the picturesque village of Bernard, where the town dock and local favorite restaurant Thurston's Lobster Pound is located. The colorful and comfortable interior has a large, open living area upstairs, along with a fabulous kitchen equipped for the gourmet cook, a cozy master bedroom with beautiful tiled shower, and a deck outside the bedroom door. The downstairs bedroom has a separate entrance and bathroom. The artist owner, who lives and works in her studio on the property, maintains an extensive landscaped garden as well as a small orchard and vegetable gardens - guests are welcome to roam! The upstairs living room and bedroom look out onto a small, peaceful perennial garden and the woods beyond.

This is a perfect home for relaxing in a quiet, out-of-the way spot, yet close to the village of Southwest Harbor (4 miles) with all of its amenities.

Pets are generally welcome, please ask! Dogs do need to be kept on a leash however as there are many gardens on this property. Longer term rentals are possible, feel free to call to discuss options. A deposit of $400 is requested to secure a rental, refundable up to 45 days in advance of the rental; after that I am happy to refund your deposit if I am able to re-rent the property. Slate House is available for rental from June-October, other times of the year if available.

About cherie

As you can see in the photo collage above, I love the outdoors and spend much of my time (when I'm not working in my studio) hiking and kayaking in Acadia, relaxing with friends and perusing my rather sizable garden, in which I grow most of my own food and maintain a varied perennial, tree and shrub landscape. In college I studied arts and languages (B.A. in french and fine arts, Tufts); I grew up in the Northeast and have lived in Maine since 1974

cherie purchased this house in 1986

Why cherie chose Acadia National Park

When I moved to Mt. Desert Island from Washington County, Me in 1983, I was already very involved in the artistic community and wanted to find a piece of land here on which I could build my home. With several other artist friends, I bought property which we then divided into separate lots, mine being about 4.5 acres on which I personally built my own cabin, then my studio and house followed in 1999 and 2004 respectively. My involvement in the Island's artistic life extends to business co-ownership of Island Artisans Gallery (from 1983 - 30 years now!) in Bar Harbor, as well as working in my own studio. I had for years also been an avid organic gardener and have been thrilled to have the land to work....

What makes this house unique

One of the great and fun aspects of my home is everything that happened long before I actually built it: for years I have collected re-cycled building materials, odd bits and pieces that I thought might go into a house someday. The flooring upstairs came out of an abandoned woolen mill in Lewiston, Me.; the slate siding on the house was salvaged from a roof in Portland, Me. - so much of what I see every day in the house has a story and a memory for me.

Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5
We chose this house for a father-daughter trip to Maine, and it worked out perfectly. Cherie is a wonderful host, keeps the Slate house well-maintained, and she had all the essentials we could need ready for us upon arrival. The house is spacious, beautiful, and the perfect size for two couples or a family that would still like to have their own privacy, since the second bed/bath is downstairs. We enjoyed our time at the property and found is to be a tranquil retreat at the end of a day out sightseeing. I would highly recommend this property to anyone traveling to the Bar Harbor area. Great experience, and the house is exactly as advertised :)

There are no words

  • 5 of 5
There are no words to adequately describe this incredible place. The owner, Cherie Bijoux, who is a gem herself (!) has graciously shared her stunning, tranquil nest with the world. And we are all the better for it. This home was the most wonderful, tranquil, comfortable, beautiful vacation rental we have every stayed in. The builders are professional artists. The home is designed for comfort, relaxation, and strong aesthetic appeal. If you love to be in a beautiful and natural environment, this is the place. It's a beautifully well constructed home with windows that allow for wonderful ventilation (or not). The kitchen is extraordinary. We love to cook and eat well and so we enjoyed the professional grade kitchen. We loved the soothing environment after being exposed to the wind and sun of the Acadia NP shoreline and hiking trails. In the height of summer, this quiet side location was a wonderful retreat. We didn't mind a little extra driving to ANP and in fact we enjoyed the beauty of this area - all the roads are worth walking, driving, or biking. It gives the feel of what Acadia once was before all the tourists descended. Wonderful places to eat out near by (XYZ, Sawyer Lobster Pound). We will be back in heartbeat. So grateful that Cherie shared this wonderful home.

So much more than we expected! Unbelievably beautiful, spacious, tasteful, absolutely perfect house in a storybook setting. The house and area is a paradise filled with natural beauty, charm and elegant simplicity. We plan to visit Mount Desert Island every year and hope to stay at the slate house every time. Cheri is a pleasure and very helpful without encroaching on your privacy. This is the ultimate getaway, I cant say enough good things!

The pictures don't do this house justice! It is open, spacious, comfortable and well equipped for an extended stay. Cherie is absolutely fabulous- helpful and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend this house for couples, families, or friends going on vacation. The location is near Bernard (and Thurston's Lobster Pound) and Southwest Harbor.

Wonderful getaway close to hiking and the coast.

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Slate House during our Thanksgiving vacation. The location could not have been better - quite and peaceful, just a short drive to fantastic hiking sites both on the coast and more mountainous terrain, and only a few minutes away from Nemo's! Cherie, the owner, was very helpful and a wonderful host. The Slate House is charming and very well equipped - it had all we needed to cook our Thanksgiving feast. We hope to be back!

Slate House

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful time at Slate House. The location of the house - on the quiet side of Mt. Desert Island - was perfect. Set back in the woods, surrounded by beautiful gardens, we enjoyed the seclusion and calm of the area.

The house, itself, is a unique work of art. Beautiful colors, paintings, and ceramics abound.

The huge, well-appointed kitchen was terrific and enabled us to enjoy cooking at home as much as we did eating at a few of the island's wonderful restaurants.

With Slate House as our base, we were able to enjoy everything the island had to offer - hiking and biking in Acadia, shopping in Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor, and, of course, Thurston's in Bernard - the local lobster pound.

Cherie, the owner of Slate House, was helpful and responsive. She suggested some terrific activities and restaurants and maintains the property, beautifully.

In short, we had a wonderful vacation at Slate House and would recommend it highly.

Slate House is located on the 'quietside' of Mt. Desert Island which boasts some of the island's finest restaurants, beautiful trails along the shore and in the mountains, a ferry serving the outer islands and charter boats available for whale watching and sightseeing, all within minutes of Slate House. 5 minutes away in Seal Cove you'll find one of the best antique auto museums in the country! The Island Explorer free bus also runs very near by and travels all over the island. A few miles away, Southwest Harbor has small boutiques, a great library, excellent food stores and restaurants, as well as a golf course; the larger town of Bar Harbor, with more extensive shopping and nightlife, is about a half hour drive. And of course Acadia National Park offers miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails along its spectacular mountains, lakes and ponds, and carriage trails.

Notes:
For eating, there is a delightful 2-seat window seat looking out onto the garden, as well as a dining table that accommodates 6 and a kitchen island that seats 3 or 4. The 'fireplace' is an antique coal stove that has been converted to a gas burner - very charming! Although the house is not well suited to very small children, older (over about 5) are welcome. There are a couple of chaise lounge chairs outdoors, as well as a glass table with four chairs for outdoor dining near the grill. Outdoors, the gardens and wooded areas on the property are lovely to stroll through The owner lives in her cabin well away from the house, and works in her studio on the property - also out of sight of the house; there is a fax available for use there, should you need it.
