Hidden Away

  • 4 of 5
Hard to believe that one can be so remote on an Island. We liked being out in the woods.... very relaxing... Just go with it and get supplies while your out so you don't have to keep going out.

We were all over this side of the island....Hiking Lava, snorkeling.....Had fish and vegetables from local markets....Farmers market in Hilo was great...
Very friendly people... be respectful...This is their home don't act Californian or "uppity" ....this is a way different experience than the Resort / Luau experience.... If you need all that stuff and you can't be open to the local people stay at the resorts....this is different and adventurous.... the cottage was great... we had fresh fish and food every night......Frog symphony all night ( I liked it) .....wild chickens walk around and roosters will go off in the morning sometimes right out the door sometimes far off... I was up at 5 am anyway ... didn't want to miss the day......

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5
First off, let me say that it was very nice, and we would stay again. The ad is accurate. No surprises! Now some particulars to hopefully help you decide.

It is located about 4 miles off the main road between Hilo and Volcano. It is in a "sud-division" that has very large lots and is heavily forested. You don't see the neighbors. It is very quiet. The cottage is quite clean and large for 2 people. The queen bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was big (shower). The living area included a kitchen which has most everything you would want for basic cooking. (no dishwasher) You can eat inside at a small table, or on the large screened in porch. The living area has a couch which turns into a futon/bed. (We did not use it as there were 2 of us.) The internet is fast, although we did not try to stream videos. (We are not in Hawaii to watch TV!)

There is no air conditioning, but that is true of most homes in the area. We were always cool, and there are ceiling fans. It rains a lot, but that is what makes the rainforest! The washer/dryer is not available unless you stay longer or pay extra I think.

One review complained about not feeling safe. There is a locked gate to the property, but as we traveled around the island, almost everyone had a gate or chain at their driveway. The cottage is in a nice area. We felt perfectly safe. We arrived at night and found the directions we were given to be good and straight forward.

If you need a 5 star resort with swimming pools and attendants, this is not it. It is a very nice home in a forested location that I think virtually anyone would enjoy. We would jump at the chance to stay there again.

Comfortable Hawaiian Hideaway

  • 4 of 5
Comfortable Hawaiian cottage in a tropical setting. Although it's located off the beaten path, it's on a street with other homes, and had a locked gate at the entrance to a private drive, so we felt perfectly safe. It was also conveniently located to exploring nearby sites such as Hilo, Puna, and Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is well appointed, with a full kitchen in case you want to cook at home. Phone and wifi are also available. The unit is very clean, and there are labels on the various switches and devices so it's very clear how to use everything. There is a screened in lanai where you can relax and enjoy the lush yard. Also a small sitting area to enjoy a book and coffee off the bedroom. It was also fun feeding the fish in the small pond out back. Mahalo to Bob and Linda for their gracious Hawaiian hospitality, and answering our questions during our stay...we had a great time!

Hideaway Aloha

  • 4 of 5
The listing is accurate. The photos are real and the property is as good as it looks. Located about 20 minutes from either Downtown Hilo or the Kilauea National Park gives you the option of enjoying things in town or the Wao Kele O'Puna rain forest and Puna in general. We really enjoyed it.
If you are the active type the outdoors on the Big Island is great. We snorkeled in Hilo (Richardson Beach) and the Kapoho Tide pools on the east cape. Saw beautiful fish and were visited by sea turtles both times! Golfed at the Hilo Municipal and the slopes of Mauna Kea at the Volcano Golf course, with a quick tour of the Volcano Winery after the round.
Hilo town offers most of the regular big stores including a Wal-Mart, Sears, etc., but also includes the Hawaii Nui/Mehana brewery if you'd like a free sample of the local hand crafted beer after shopping. We also found a local Hawaiian band playing beautiful Hawaiian music (complete with locals leaving their chairs to Hula dance) at the Hilo Town Tavern. Crazy as it sounds, we also enjoyed the McDonalds in Keaau for breakfast which served scrambled eggs, white rice and either Spam or Portuguese sausage. Maybe not the healthiest breakfast, but it tasted great and we needed to replace some calories!
The Hideaway is situated in a quiet forest (minus the Coqui Frogs after dark) on Hwy 11 and provides a break from all the daily activities. One BDRM was enough for my wife and I and the cable service (TV, Phone, Internet) out there was a nice convenience. The bathroom shower also had good pressure and plenty of hot water! Extremely hard to beat the price as well! So, if you're looking for an adventure and want to go local, the Hideaway is a great place to start.

OK but no Aloha

  • 2 of 5
We arrived at this rental after dark, which wasn't a great idea. It is quite a distance down a dark subdivision road and the houses around it are gated and have hard to read numbers, so it was a challenge to find. The gates and dogs and No Trespassing signs gave us a creepy feeling about the neighborhood. Also there was a complicated system of lockbox combinations and 3 emails of instructions on getting into the house. The house itself was roomy and looked fine, but it had inconveniences. They advised us not to drink the water, and to put all food and garbage in the fridge due to bugs. The power went out for several hours the second night, adding to the creepiness. Everywhere else we stayed in Hawaii had such an open, friendly feeling that this place was a contrast.

Owner's Response: Well, I guess we can't please everyone!!!
Some are more suited for the "Resort" style vacation, while others enjoy a more secluded, private vacation.
We, as home owners in Hawaii open "Our Hawaiian Hideaway" to visiting guests from around the world which is "The Spirit of Aloha". We try hard to live up to it's meaning everyday.
We invite you to read our other reviews to get an idea of what type of vacation you can expect and how some guests appreciated their stay at Our Hawaiian Hideaway.

Love the hideaway!

  • 5 of 5
"Our Hawaiian Hideaway" is located halfway between Hilo and the Hawaiian volcanoes national park in a more rural area away from typical resorts. We loved it! The heavy beautiful foliage provided privacy and the home is well-equipped and nicely decorated. Free wi-if and cable TV still gives you a "civilized" stay while feeling that you are truly away from it all.
