History of the area:
Cyprus is steeped in 5000 years of history,it has many fine archaeological sites including at least 3 amphitheatres.
In Paphos a 13th. century castle guards the harbour entrance and some of the most impressive mosaics in the world are found on the headland beyond the harbour.
The site of the tombs of the kings is well worth a visit as is the site of the Byzantine church where St.Paul was tortured while chained to a pillar.
Kolossi castle, once the base for the Crusaders, towers over the vineyards of Kolossi village, and not far away is the ancient stadium, where you can sit and imagine the screaming chariot races. All these sites are within a 30 minute drive of Villa Delphia.
The Troodos mountains which are very accessible to the Villa Delphia have a wealth of small villages, where vineyards, cherry orchards and goats abound. It is well worth planning a route taking in some of the villages, stopping at the local winery for a tasting, the potteries or to take in the dramatic views.
Beach and Coast:
Villa Delphia is only a 2 minute drive to the sea and only a few Km. from Aphrodite's rock which is where the legendary daughter of Zeus and goddess of love and beauty emerged from the sea onto the rock.Swimming here is a joy in the early evening when the sea is calm.Folk law has it that if you swim round the rock 3 times you will be granted eternal youth
Pissouri bay is an attractive pebble & sany bay, usually quiet at either end while the centre has a variety of water sports including sailing and water skiing. You can hire a hoby cat or water skis by the hour.It is a 15 min. drive from villa Delphia along the beautiful coastline. The Akamas peninsular and nature reserve is a wonderful day out, pack a picnic and stop on the way at the sea caves and the little harbour of Agios Georgios. After that the road turns into a dirt track so a 4-wheel drive is recommended. If you enjoy off roading then there are lots of tracks to explore.Lara beach is beautiful.Turtles come ashore here to lay eggs
Eating out:
There are a variety of restaurants and tavernas in the area within easy drive of Villa Delphia. The nearest is at the Secret valley golf club just 5 mins. from the villa. You do not have to be a member to use the facilities. It is stylish, in a beautiful setting overlooking the golf course and lake and a very pleasant venue for mid morning coffee or lunch.
There are several tavernas in the charming local village of Kouklia,5 mins. drive from Villa Delphia. They all serve good basic Greek food and wine at reasonable prices.
Every Wednesday through the summer you can join in a 'Greek evening' in the village square at Pissouri to watch the traditional dancing and entertainment and enjoy a substantial buffet supper.Vrakas Taverna is the place to book.'The Bunch of Grapes' is another lively restaurant with excellent service in an attractive courtyard.
