Little Switzerland Chalet Rental Photos and Description

Chalet, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-2)

Stay in your own little haven -- a stone chalet that was once the Kilmichael Tower. This one bedroom chalet, with impressive two-foot thick stone walls and 23-foot cathedral ceiling, harks back to the days when the Kilmichaels left their mark in history on the Isle of Arran. Chalet Switz today offers Blue Ridge mountain ecology, imaginative architectural design and the perfect setting for a memorable getaway.

Located on the very top of 4000-foot Grassy Mountain, the Chalet is a 20-minute walk from Little Switzerland's village center, a historic 100-year old town with quaint shops, homes of extraordinary character and fine and casual dining. As you walk down a country road to the village you will enjoy breathtaking views and the countryside filled with wildlife and natural forest, passing a few residences on the way as you descend 800 feet. Your walk can easily be extended to take in a visit to Grassy Falls, about a mile beyond the village inn.

Chalet Switz is made of natural materials with the finest of craftsmanship. Cozy nooks and corners include the inglenook with wood-burning stone fireplace and spectacular views of the unpolluted night skies right from your bed! Amenities for your comfort include down pillows, Ralph Lauren linens, and a Kohler Greek tub with hand-held shower in which you can relax and enjoy the serenity. The kitchen is equipped with refrigerator-freezer, stove/oven, coffee maker, toaster and distinctive dinnerware. A pleasant garden surrounding the Chalet can be enjoyed while dining outdoors or relaxing in chaise lounges.

Nearby are spectacular hiking, Penland ( and pottery, glass, wood and other fine craft studios that welcome visitors, and the city of Asheville. In the winter, when 'the season' has ended and village shops and the Inn (but not the Mountain View restaurant) have closed, there is peaceful quiet and endless views. See the website for more details.

About Bettie Sommer

The day I happened upon the Kilmichael Tower during an idyllic vacation in Little Switzerland, I decided to turn it into a residence although I resided 600 miles away in Winter Park, Florida and worked as a tenured professor at the University of Central Florida. Currently, I am launching a second career in photography, inspired in part by the beauty of leisurely days spent in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I like having kindred spirits enjoy the chalet.

Bettie Sommer purchased this chalet in 1986

Why Bettie Sommer chose Little Switzerland

Pristine forests, meadows and waterfalls are right there in the town within walking distance. The Switzerland Inn offers breakfast-through-dinner fireside dining with a lively bar, a grand flagstone lobby with massive fireplace and views south into the valley. The town is informal, energetic and blessedly free of pretense. commercialism, and “development.” The area is internationally renowned for both its welcoming fine craft artist studios and rustic arts. In the area, folks play mountain music, clog and square dance, work iron and wood, cane chairs, and engage in other traditional activities that are open to visitors. Surrounded by wild nature, Grassy Mountain offers the opportunity to be among deer, rabbits, wild turkey, fox, huge owls and other birds, wild apple trees, forests with hillsides of blooming native plants, and the annual monarch butterfly migration.

What makes this chalet unique

Location, location, location right in the village of Little Switzerland--surrounded by nature, in a historic building on a mountaintop, and near the Blue Ridge Parkway. A fun vacation getaway tailored to one or two persons in a spacious residential mountain neighborhood with nature still intact. The romance of interior stone walls and holiday architecture and furnishings. A delightful stroll downhill in an ever-changing landscape to the village center and a waterfall. Scenic drives to Mt. Mitchell, Crabtree Meadows and Falls, Linville, Penland and America’s best fine craft studios, and the always fascinating Asheville.

Honeymoon Chalet

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I went to the Little Switzerland Chalet on our Honeymoon and could not imagine a better place! You feel completely secluded and you have all the room you need. We loved the history of the Chalet and the little town close by. We had such a perfect stay and plan to come back this year! We now feel like it is our own special little place! Thanks for sharing!

Great place for romantic getaway! Couples ONLY

  • 4 of 5

We celebrated our anniversary at the Chalet Switz and absolutely loved the place. This place is perfect if you are looking for a quiet, close to nature, above the clouds (literally) retreat. I surprised my husband with this trip & Bettie was extremely helpful and accommodating, not to mention responding VERY promptly to multiple emails & answering all questions in the days leading up to our stay. She also stayed in touch during our visit. She was very kind and provided a lot of helpful info about the area. Unfortunately we couldn’t enjoy any outdoor activities or amenities due to the weather conditions (icy storm), but we still had a chance to enjoy absolutely breathtaking views. Plus this cabin is so cozy and equipped with everything you need to have a romantic getaway; we didn’t feel that we missed much. We liked this place a lot and plan to come back, but meanwhile we are telling our friends about Chalet and strongly recommend this place. Thank you so much - Bettie and Steven (housekeeper)!

Great little get away!

  • 5 of 5

I just returned from a stay at the Chalet. What a fabulous location! And such a neat little chalet full of history. My husband and I enjoyed our time here so much. The chalet is small, but it really doesn't feel it with the gorgeous high windows and the light streaming in in the loft. We never felt crowded, just perfectly cosy. We enjoyed having a fire in the fireplace so much, it made the chalet feel so warm and lovely. The decoration and sheets and dishes are all so lovely, Bettie definitely has an eye for detail. And as I mentioned, the location is amazing. We walked down the mountain into Little Switzerland and enjoyed the Cafe right in town (fabulous food!) and yummy coffee from the book shop. We also took a hike at Crabtree Falls (Very much recommend) and a day trip to Grandfather mountain (also VERY MUCH recommend). So glad we stayed here!

My husband and i loved every minute of our stay here. This was an unexpected spur of the moment get away for us. The weather was beautiful and the chalet was awesome. We awoke to the morning sun shining threw the windows. There is really nothing I can expect that it was gorgeous and a very romantic getaway. The owner is great and very sweet we will definetly be back and have referred friends that have already reserved the place.
