THE PILOT HOUSE IN SOUTH PORTLAND

South Portland House Rental Photos and Description

2 bedroom, 2 bathrooms (sleeps 6)

Newly remodeled, immaculate cottage in the Willard Beach neighborhood of South Portland. Modern updates mixed with Maine charm make this vacation rental a great choice for your Maine getaway. Just a short 5 minute walk to Willard Beach provides portage for kayaks, nearly a mile of walkable beach and a play area for children. The Portland Head Light, one of Travel and Leisure's top ten best places to visit in the US, is a quick 1 mile trip down beautiful Shore Road. The two bedroom cottage includes a master with a queen size memory foam bed and a second bedroom with two twin beds. A sofa sleeper brings the house capacity to six. Bed and bath linens (including beach towels) are supplied in the rental. A full kitchen including all dishes, cookware and a microwave oven is provided. Yes, there is a lobster pot. They are mandatory in Maine! The walk out basement has great storage for skis, snowshoes and other outdoor equipment. We have put together a book of detailed information about the area and our favorite spots. These gems might otherwise go unnoticed when you are new to the area. Enjoy the morning sun and a cup of coffee on the front porch or relax in the adirondack chairs in the back yard.

The yard is large enough for a volleyball game and to keep your kayaks. A covered bicycle area is also available.

WONDERFUL PLACE TO STAY IN SOPO

  • 5 of 5
Oh, we were so sad to have to leave the pilot house This is the perfect place to stay in order to get to all the area attractions, including the fabulous Willard Beach. We've been going to different areas of Maine for the last few years, and Willard Beach is by far my favorite as is the Pilot House. It is within walking distance to the beach, the amazing Willard Ice Cream Shop (best ice cream I've ever had) and Scratch Bakery. Get the cinnamon roll at Scratch and you'll be running back for another one the next morning. The food in the area is the best I've had in Maine, including Otto's Pizza and Willow Restaurant for the Caesar Salad. And these two restaurants deliver, so that's a wonderful convenience.

By mid-week we were trying to figure out if we could make it work for two weeks next year. This was the perfect place to stay with kids and small dogs as the backyard is large, although not totally fenced so can't let the little critters run totally free, and a super-cute lobster crate patio that lights up at night and is utterly magical.

Thanks Patti and Britt for allowing us to share in the amazing SoPo experience. We can't wait to come back next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you! It makes us happy to know you are enjoying The Pilot House! We take great pride in making sure it's always clean and comfortable. We tune-up the house constantly. In addition you will find fast WIFI, A/C in the summer, a warm house in the winter, washer/dryer, grill, Adirondack chairs, big back yard and always clean duvet covers (you know the difference if you travel a lot). Never hesitate to ask us for information if you have any questions about The Pilot House or the surrounding area.

WISH WE WERE STILL THERE!

  • 5 of 5
We loved everything about this house and the surrounding area of Portland and South Portland. The house had everything we needed and Patti and Britt were wonderful hosts! We took a boat tour in the Casco Bay, a trolley tour of downtown Portland, and a train ride up the coast! We walked to Willard Beach and stopped at Willard Scoops on our way back for some ice cream. We absolutely enjoyed every minute spent in Maine. We even took a day trip to Mt. Washington (about 2 hours away) and had snow flurries!! We will definitely be back to Maine one day, and would rent this home again in a heartbeat! Thank you for opening your home up so we could have this amazing vacation! :)

QUAINT PORTLAND HOUSE BY THE BEACH

  • 5 of 5
Great stay at the Pilot House. The location is great: a short walk to the beach and easy access to the main attractions. The house was stocked with all the essentials and then some--which was great when we cooked some our Maine lobsters. The only drawback was the bathroom. Although it was recently updated, it was very cramped. There was no real division between the toilet and the shower, which was a little awkward. Not a huge deal for us. Other than that, it was a great stay. Thanks!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the five stars!
Many older homes have challenging spaces. This house was built 1920. We agree, the bathroom is small. We couldn't make
it bigger, but we did create a modern room. A glass vessel sink, heated floor, mosaic glass tiles on all walls and a rain
shower make it inviting and functional.
The lobster pot is required equipment in a Maine kitchen. You can also have your fresh lobsters cooked in the store and
enjoy them on our patio surrounded by lobster traps.

Exactly as described on website. Great for girls weekend, everything was close by as we took the ferry to Peaks Island and spent time in downtown Portland. Would stay at the Pilot House again.

Owner's Response: Thank you!
The Casco Bay Line is a great way to explore the islands. The ferries run year around and you can bring your dog.
In the winter we like to stand on the top deck and take photographs of the picturesque islands in Casco Bay.
The low light of winter makes for dramatic pictures.

GREAT VACATION IN THE PORTLAND AREA

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I wanted a nice place near Portland for a 5 day getaway vacation and this fit the bill! Patti and Britt were most accomodating and The Pilot House was like a little home away from home. The owners recommended several good places to eat and introduced us to two new places- The Willards Scoops- best ice cream in Maine and The Scratch Bakery- all products were fresh and delicious. Both were within walking distance of our cottage as well as Willard's Beach. Two of my older sisters came up from CT and we enjoyed a mini-family reunion. ( We had grown up in East Deering as kids in the 1950s) The neighborhood was quiet and freindly and we will certainly be back here again in the fall. Highly recommend this cottage to older couples like us who like to do day trips.

Owner's Response: We appreciate your thoughtful review! The Pilot House is definitely a great "home base" for a variety of day trips regardless of the season. Whether you are cross county skiing in Robinson Woods, visiting Two Lights State Park or walking the museums of the historic Old Port in downtown Portland, adventures are just down the road from The Pilot House. Fall foliage and warm apple cider are on the horizon. See you soon!
