Overview

St. Mary Villa Rental Photos and Description

Villa, 3 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 3 Baths, (Sleeps up to 6)

Point of View is privately owned, solar powered home on one completely fenced and gated acre. It is comprised of a main living building, and separate bedroom building. Below the main building is the caretaker's unit. While it affords privacy, the caretaker is nearby should you need them. Additionally, another building houses the ballet studio and includes a full bath. Studio can also be used as a bedroom for another couple, with queen bed.

This home was originally built in 1989, and expanded over the years to what it is today. It includes a beautiful private pool with large sunny deck, and poolhouse, which includes a small kitchen area, under the counter refrigerator, and a gas grill.

The living area of the house consists of a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, 3/4 bath, day room (with twin bed), and living room that opens to a deck/patio area.

The bedroom building is connected to the main house by a breezeway and consists of the master bedroom (king bed) with sitting area, and separate deck overlooking the pool and fantastic view of Montserrat. There is also a small bedroom with bunk beds. The master bath has a large round tub, partially outside, and surrounded by a stone wall for privacy.

Built on a hill, stone stairways connect all the buildings. The lower building on the property is our beautiful, breezy workout studio with a mirrored wall on one side & windows overlooking an unobstructed ocean view on the opposite side. Wooden louvres on the E & W walls allow the breeze to blow across the room as you work out. It has an outside deck with built in benches on both sides.

If you like hiking, our friendly Labrador, Carmela, is available to escort you to one of Antigua's FINEST beaches, 'Rendezvous'. Not to be missed! Pack a lunch, throw a few drinks in your backpack and head off. It's about a 25-35 minute walk.

If you are a horse rider, check out Antigua Equestrian Center. Just up the road, arrangements can be made to ride to the beach and see some of the back parts of our beautiful island.

For nightlife, English Harbour is just a 10 minute drive around to the other side of Falmouth Harbour. There are several excellent restaurants for you to choose from, and our caretaker can assist you with making reservations. Sunday evening everyone heads to Shirley Heights. Watch the sunset, have a rum punch and listen to the steel band, all while overlooking beautiful English and Falmouth Harbours.

And don't miss downtown St. John's. Guests of Point of View can enjoy a 10% discount at Island Creations, located in historic Redcliffe Quay. After a bit of shopping, check out Big Banana's 'Pizzas in Paradise' for pizza and a cool drink, also in Redcliffe Quay.

After you have exhausted yourself shopping and arrive back to Point of View, well-laden with souvenirs and trinkets, you can end your day with a dip in the pool and a sunset drink. As the sun sets into the horizon, you may even see a green flash!

Keywords: Gated 1 acre property with view of Falmouth Harbour, lush gardens, breezy ballet studio, caretaker on premises. Close to beach and English Harbour restaurants.

About Gina

Originally from California, I made my home in Antigua from 1986 til 2008. My family now lives in Aiken, South Carolina, with 4 horses, 3 dogs, and 2 cats.

Gina purchased this villa in 1989

Why Gina chose St. Mary

280 degree ocean view....was hard to pass up.

What makes this villa unique

I built this house from the rocks up, taking care to locate each building in a way to catch the wonderful breezes and take advantage of the beautiful views. We like to think we did o.k.!

What a stunning location. If you wanted to be off the grid for awhile, this is the place. Private and peaceful. We, as animal lovers welcomed the on-site caretaker's dogs and cats Smudge, Roxy, Moe and Not Moe. Meals and coffee from the poolside veranda are required. You will understand when you visit.
Places to visit are Shirley Heights for cocktails and sunsets, Nelson's Dockyard and the various ruins around the Island. The only complete windmill I saw was Betty's Hope. Interesting to me to think back as to how it must have been when the island was blanketed with sugar cane plantations. Snorkel Cades Reef and Jolly Harbour. While at Jolly Harbour get you provisions at The Epicurean Grocery.
I can't think of a better, more relaxing holiday than the one we experienced at "Point of View". We can't wait to return.

AWESOME Vacation

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful time at Point of View . The villa is clean, comfortable with amazing views every where you look . I spent the week with my mother and two children and we all had a wonderful time. We spent most of the time in the pool, which was the perfect temperature. The villa has everything you could need to feel at home. No TV, but they have a DVD player and a library of DVDs . I recommend renting a car, which we did . We explored the island and went to Turners Beach several times for great food, jet skiing and beautiful swimming . We loved our time here and can't wait to return. Thank you Katherine for assisting us in anything we needed. The animals Roxie and smudge made us feel at home.

Another great stay at Point of View!

  • 5 of 5
We are recently back from our second two week stay at Point of View. We first stayed at the property in 2012 and had been dreaming of a return trip ever since our plane left Antiguan soil on that trip. We are a family of 5 with 3 teenage daughters and are now very comfortable getting around the island. As with our first trip we couldn't have been happier with our stay. Katherine was (again) extremely helpful and always full of great information on the island. With our trip coinciding with Antigua Carnival there was a much larger number of tourists and activities available on the island during this trip (which was very nice). Beyond seeing the island many of our favorite days were spent sitting around Point of View and enjoying the villa.

Some tips:
-Be prepared to get a local drivers license (~$20usd) and a 4wd vehicle. You will quickly get used to driving on the left hand side of the road (if you don't already). A 4wd vehicle is extremely helpful on the island in general and especially to get up the mountain to Point of View. A good map or GPS makes your trip much less stressful.
-If you travel to Antigua in the off-season (like we do) plan on arriving with an idea of the restaurants and other sites/activities you want to hit and make sure you call ahead to check to see if they are open. Many have off-season schedules. We did this and had a great experience. We actually liked many of their FB pages in the weeks leading up to our trip so we knew what events were going on and what specials the restaurants had. Some of our favorites: Touloulou's, Trappas, OJs, Copper and Lumber (Friday night seafood), and the always popular Sunday party at Shirley Heights.
-Don't "overplan" in Antigua and be prepared to live on "island time" for awhile. Everything happens at a different pace there so go with it and make up some (or most) of your schedule as you go. You'll enjoy it more this way :)
-Get out on the water. We love the beaches and have been to a bunch of them (Favorites: Rendezvous Bay, Halfmoon Bay, Valley Church, and Jolly Beach). We also loved taking a Catamaran out to Barbuda (BEAUTIFUL beaches and great trip). This year we chartered a sailboat for a day (the Jabberwocky through http://www.adventurecaribbean.com/) and HIGHLY recommend it.

We can't recommend Point of View enough and we're already scouring our calendar for open dates for our next trip.

Wonderful Vacation Rental

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed at Point of View Villa for our honeymoon in June, we had a fabulous stay. The location of the house is ideal for the island and we loved being close enough to get around to lots of places but not being in a resort style place. The house itself was exactly as depicted in the pictures, the views are unbelievable. Some of our most favorite evenings were spent by the pool overlooking the water. The dogs were so loving and sweet it was a little piece of home away from home for us. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely stay at Point of View villa again!

Our "point of view"

Our "point of view"

The views from this villa are truly beautiful and ever changing throughout the day. The house is all it is advertised as being and the caretaker, Katherine, and her four legged menagerie are a huge bonus. Highlights of our week: 1. Fig Tree Drive and the great beaches and beach bars between Falmouth and Jolly Harbor. 2. Great snorkeling at Long Bay and even better at Galleon Beach. Galleon Beach is very close to English Harbor and is calm, clear and has a shipwreck in fifteen foot of water that teems with fish. 3. The variety of restaurants nearby. Caribbean Taste and Grace Before Meals are owned and run by locals and the food is served family style and is remarkably good. 4. Katherine, our congenial and accommodating hostess, was a valuable source of information and support. I recommend you rent her car for excursions around the island.
That said, there are some things that need to be addressed, not as complaints, but as a heads up for anyone considering staying here. 1. Mosquitoes. The house is open, no screens, and we were there after a rainy week, so the mosquitoes were everywhere. Before going to bed on your first night, check inside the mosquito netting around the bed. We did not do so our first night and were feasted upon by a dozen or so mosquitoes that were trapped inside with us. Take spray with you or buy some after arriving. Generally, the constant trade winds keep them away in open areas, but they seem to lurk under tables and bed, waiting for fresh tourist blood. 2. We have pets, so the three dogs and two cats that have the run of the property, were no problem. We grew very fond of Carmela and Roxy and they became our constant companions around the house. If you don't like dogs or cats, stay away. 3. The hike to Rendezvous Beach. It is a 45 minute (each way) trail to a very nice beach. The day we went, it was very hot and when we arrived, the water was pretty rough - bummer. Carmela misled us, so watch the trail signs unless you like backtracking. I don't believe she was malicious, I think she just didn't want us to miss anything. The cautions here are to wear sturdy shoes, the trail is rough and there are thorns and cactus that will puncture thin soles. Take plenty of water with you.
Thank you, Gina, for sharing your house and pets with us and thank you, Katherine, for everything you did to make our visit enjoyable and memorable.

Amazing Vacation

  • 5 of 5
This was our second stay at Point of View and it was even more enjoyable than the last! The views are breathtaking, and the house itself is just spectacular. We absolutely loved relaxing and taking in the view from the pool, watching the sunset every night from the deck, and sitting under the stars at night. I cannot imagine a more beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing place to stay in Antigua.
The house is in a convenient spot on the island with amazing beaches just a short drive away. We particularly loved Fryes beach, Half Moon Bay, Pigeon Beach, Hermitage Bay, and Valley Church Beach. Although we did not do it this trip, we loved hiking on our last trip to Rendezvous Bay with our favorite canine companion, Carmela. It is a beautiful beach and a great hike not to be missed by those who enjoy a little exercise.
Katherine is an incredibly gracious and helpful host. She was always there when we needed any assistance and made our trip that much more pleasant. She recommended wonderful beaches, restaurants, and things to see and do. We of course loved all of the furry companions too! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend Point of View to anyone looking for a secluded place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of Antigua.
