All-year self-catering apartment on the sunny west side of La Palma - the greenest and most beautiful of the Canary Islands. Sleeps 5, 1 double, 1 twin and 1 single bedrooms. Shower room with proper shower cubicle -
kitchen-diner with full oven and hob, kettle, coffee machine, microwave, double sink, large dining table, SAT-TV. The apartment is the lower floor of a two-storey 200 year old Canarian house which is set in its own grounds of around 2,000 square metres set out over three terraces with fruit trees, shady avocado trees to relax under and a covered outdoor terrace for alfresco dining and barbecues. The pool is large and deep and set within its own little tropical garden area (covered with netting to keep the water clean). Hairdryer. Shared washing machine and clothes dryer. The English owners live upstairs. The pretty town of Los Llanos is 2 minutes away by car and there are 2 beaches within 20 minutes' drive.
I can't recommend La Palma highly enough, particularly the west coast of the island. La Palma is a fantastically interesting place and has lots to see and plenty of activities to keep you busy, particularly walking/hiking. The caldera is spectacular and the views from the highest peaks are spectacular.
Our hosts Sue and Finlo were superbly friendly and welcoming. We stayed in the self contained log cabin in their garden which includes a nice kitchen and bathroom with shower, as well as a double bed and dining area. Also provided are a tv with satellite receiver, dvd player and stereo. There is even a small selection of dvds. There is a lovely pool at the bottom of the garden which was wonderfully refreshing for an early morning dip. The garden itself was very pleasant with fresh fruit and some interesting cats.
Overall, this was an excellent holiday in a brilliant location and fantastic accommodation.
We would have given this 4 stars but the site only responded to 3 or 5!
Our 5-day break on La Palma was booked as a birthday surprise for my partner who is keen on astronomy. The cabin was clean and well-furnished and provided all that we needed for our short break. We were made very welcome by the lovely owners, Sue and Finlo. They provided a welcome pack which was a nice surprise too!
We did find the cabin a little warm in August but there were fans and, of course, the pool at the end of the garden! This was well-tended and large enough for a swim (not ideal for children/weaker swimmers as no 'shallow end!). There was not quite as much outside seating area as we would have liked, due to the gardens having become rather overgrown, during the last year ( due to some health issues).
The directions and help in car hire that we were given, were excellent, as was local information supplied by Finlo.
We were advised to visit a local restaurant, San Petronio, and this proved to be an excellent experience. As previously mentioned, my partner is an amateur astronomer and we enjoyed a visit to the observatory and an excellent evening tour with AstrolaPalma. Augustin and Ana, the two astro-physicists, shared their expertise and enthusiasm in a friendly, understandable manner.
We would recommend this quiet and peaceful location.
The wooden house (everything in one room but tastefullly decorated, well equiped and clean) is situated between El Paso and Los Llanos in a beautiful garden with al kinds of (fruit)trees and plants and a lovely vegetable garden. There's even a swimmingpool in between the green. You can notice the owners love gardening. The house has suficient shadow, sun comes through the trees, so it's not too hot inside. There are chairs, tables and a bbq. No noise from outside, apart from a cockney in the morning and some frogs in the evening and whistling birds. Really lovely sounds if you like nature. If you don't like cats it can be hard because the owners have some cats, three I guess. We really loved the place and the island. When we visit La Palma again we'll certainly stay at Casa Cain.
We had a lovely time at Casa Cain. The cabin was very cosy and had everything we needed. The welcome pack (water, wine, milk, fruit, chocolate, bread, etc.) was a real treat, and Sue and Finlo were great, helping us with bus times before our stay, picking us up from the bus station on arrival, etc. We didn't hire a car but had no problems visiting other places on the island by bus - Los Llanos is very well linked. It is a 20-minute walk uphill to Casa Cain from the centre of Los Llanos, which was fine for us, but if you're not fit or have children, a car might be preferable. Or you can get a taxi for about 5 euros. Overall, excellent value for money. Can't recommend it enough!
Our stay here was absolutely first rate. The evening we arrived (with three teenage children), we thought that we would all have to stay in the apartment. What a delight to find that my partner and I were staying in the log cabin.
Finlo and Sue are veritable fountains of knowledge about the island and certainly contributed to making our stay excellent. The garden is beautiful with fruits and vegetables (avocadoes, oranges, limes, chillis and lanterns) which we were encouraged to try. The garden also has a bar b que for use if you like.
The apartment and cabin were spotless when we arrived and had everything that we could possibly need, including the use of a washing machine if needed. There is a TV and DVD player in the cabin for use, but we didn't even bother using that. The children spent most of their time in the pool, in fact we all did (including midnight swims). The pool is covered with netting which prevents it from getting covered in leaves and such.
It's very close to the town of Los Llanos yet you wouldn't think that you were as the garden is almost completely secluded.
We had an utterly relaxing enjoyable time, not one of us wanted to leave. We have already recommended the place to our friends and family and will make a point of going back. This is the first time we have ever wanted to revisit a place.
Transport is essential though as there are so many hills and to walk there in the heat if you are unfit, with children or elderly would be very difficult.
For anyone who wants to hire a car, don't bother with GPS (garmin, tom tom, etc) they don't really work. It's a small island and you're never really lost for more than five minutes. Sue and Finlo's directions were spot on and not only did we find the place straight away, we also found all the little tracks and roads to viewing points which he suggested.
You can eat in if you're on a budget, but there is also a list of good resturants to try in the apartment, including loads of leaflets and brochures on things to do in La Palma.
We have a bit of thing about staying in wooden buildings and this property is just fabulous. The garden setting is gorgeous - surrounded by orange, lemon and avocado trees - and the area is quiet and peaceful Sue and Finlo are on hand if you need help or advice but there is no feeling of them cramping your style. We can't think of any downside to this as a rental property. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves there and thought it was incredibly good value for money.
La Palma is famous for its fantastic walks - try the 'Route of the Volcanoes' right down the spine of the island or walk round the edge of one of the largest volcanic craters in the world, the Caldera de Taburiente. Or sunbathe and relax on the uncrowded black sand beaches. No mass tourism in this island which is renowned for its tranquillity and beauty. If you enjoy cycling, there are some spectacular routes, but please note there is nowhere flat on the island. Wonderful fresh food, delicious wines from grapes we'd certainly never heard of before. Enjoy a day out fishing or whale watching. And if you're into photography, you'll go home with some truly amazing photos. A haven for botanists, with beautiful plants and flowers round every corner.
Although our garden flat is listed under El Paso, the county town of Los Llanos is actually nearer, literally 2 minutes' away by car.
