Review of Gregorio Flat
This apartment met all our needs for a holiday trip to Italy. An extended family of five---two teen aged girls and three adults---we rented this flat for three weeks over the Christmas and New Year holidays. We wanted a flat where we could cook, clean clothes, and relax as a family in a way not possible in a succession of hotels. Also, we wanted an affordable base from which to travel to other destinations for brief overnight excursions. This apartment was great for all those things.
The apartment itself is more spacious than the pictures indicate. The three bedrooms are fairly large. The bathroom situation was fine for us. We basically used one room as the shower room and the other as the primping/make-up room. If the larger bathroom had a water barrier for the shower, it would be handier. The kitchen is basic and serviceable - we cooked holiday meals and basic dinners. There is no microwave oven or toaster—and both would add to the usefulness of the kitchen. The terrace is very large and would be great in summer. The television worked fine for DVDs and the Wifi was perfect.
The apartment overlooks a busy street so there is traffic noise but no honking or screeching tires. There is, however, easy access to transportation. The buses stop in front of the apartment building and the metro is just up the street, so getting into the center of Rome is easy. However, the apartment is located a bit farther out than we expected, so once you were off sightseeing in Rome there wasn’t the easy stop back at the apartment for lunch that we had hoped for. We were able to walk down and back to the Vatican—about 1.5 miles---for Christmas Eve Mass.
The neighborhood behind the flat is nice. A number of small restaurants with reasonable prices, two good grocery stores (the Co-op has the best deli), small green grocers, pastry shops, a great Enoteca that sells wine by the liter, dress shops, and even a computer repair store.
Jacapo was wonderful. He met one of us early on a Sunday to let us into the flat after a very long trip and was gracious and full of advice on where to shop, bank, and eat. During the three weeks, he kept in touch but was not obtrusive and was extremely responsive when we needed help.
