The well-appointed kitchen makes 'eating in' easy and the washer and dryer keeps everything clean and dry. Bugling Elk Bungalow is 7 miles from the southern entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park, 17 miles to White Pass Ski area, and 1/3 of a mile from downtown Packwood. Mix & match Beautiful Northwest Lodging houses, and get the smallest at a 25% discount.

Packwood and the Bugling Elk Bungalow are situated between Mt. Rainier, Mt. Saint Helens, Mt. Adams, and surrounded by Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Leave the fast pace and hassles behind, and embark on an adventure of natural scenic delights and wildlife so abundant, you will wonder if you are driving through the heart of a wild life preserve. Elk even appear a natural extension of the downtown Packwood landscape.

Getting to Packwood, on Hwy 12, Washington's White Pass Scenic Byway, 'Playground of Volcano Country' (received state and federal designation) is half the fun!

Historic Packwood, WA, is considered the dream of recreational enthusiasts, and White Pass ski area (17 miles beyond Packwood) has 1,510 vertical feet, ski lifts, great family skiing/ snowboard programs, terrain for all ages, and all in stunningly beautiful surroundings. They also offer lessons and rentals for classical cross-country, skating, or snowshoeing.

In December 2010, White Pass re-opened following a $9 million expansion project that opens 767 acres to riding, two new chairlifts, 13 new trails and a new day lodge. 'Paradise Basin's opening is the biggest new thing in years for Cascade skiers and snowboarders . . . turning White Pass into a midsize Northwest ski area . . . Even though its ski terrain has doubled, White Pass retains the feeling of a small resort.'

Erica: What a snug home away from home! We looked forward to coming back from skiing and settling in for games, reading and movies. The queen bed is the most comfortable one ever! Thank you for the well-stocked kitchen. My daughter and I enjoyed preparing our own meals. She would love to return with friends and utilize the cute spaces upstairs too! Thanks for sharing your wonderful retreat with us!

Daughter, Jordan: This is the cutest place ever! The upper bedrooms are just the place...

Very nice cottage

  • 4 of 5
Overall very pleased with this cottage. It is conveniently located close to the entrance to Mt. Rainier NP and very close to the main part of town. The cabin was clean except for a few small spiders in the bathroom corners. The hot tub was nice, once my husband figured out how to raise the temp over 89 degrees (some instructions would be helpful). The fire pit was terrific. Beautiful to sit outside under the stars in the evening. It was also nice having a TV to watch some of the World Cup games. And our Sprint cell phones actually worked! The wireless internet worked great too.
Our first evening we were greeted by 4 Elk which were grazing on the driveway. There was plenty of room in the cottage. Although there were a lot of beds, there is only 1 bathroom. Keep that in mind if you are traveling with lots of kids. I appreciated the Air Conditioner because it was quite warm the day we arrived. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and equipment which were in good condition, but I would have appreciated a few more of those incidentals which are impractical to buy - such as paper towels, spray cleaner, condiments, tea bags etc. There were charcoal briquettes for the grill but there was no lighter fluid.
I would definitely recommend this cottage. The owner was very easy to work with via email. Mt. Rainier NP is awesome and the drive from Packwood is lovely. Packwood is tiny. There isn't a whole lot there. Restaurant food is mostly limited to burgers and pizza and the supermarket is small with limited choices. The Butter Butte coffee shop was very nice though.

Great place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5
Nicely furnished. Reservations are simple and Marilly is a "peach" of a gal to work with. We happened to hit a nice patch of nice weather...so nice that with the full moon, we could see Mt. Rainier in the evenings....and the stars!!! So numerous. Definitely a place to "get away from it all" but has 21st century technology if you really need to be on-line (why????).with fast speed internet access (and Verizon cell coverage in the area). There was a herd of elk that passed through the property while we were there as well (the place is aptly named).

Owner's Response: Dear R & K,

Thank you for your kind words. You must really like the area because you keep coming back and now stayed in each of our houses. We try our best to make them nice, but cannot order up the weather. Glad yours was memorable. I never tire of Mt. Rainier and all her moods . . . hmmmm, "Mountain at Midnight" sounds romantic. Elk visits are more regular than yours, but we enjoy both. You might consider buying property in Packwood. we would love to have you for neighbors.

Great Stay Close to White Pass

  • 4 of 5
The property was perfect for a nice White Pass gettaway. The only thing we were bumbed about was that the hot tub was a look warm temp. and couldn't be raised above 99 degrees. Other than that I would reccomend it to all my freinds.

Owner's Response: Dear JP,

Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Bugling Elk Bungalow and its proximity to White Pass ski area. I enjoyed speaking with you on the phone, and was thrilled you had fresh powder for skiing with your friends. I'm sorry you couldn't get the hot tub up to its maximum of 104 degrees, and wish you would have called or emailed so I could get someone out to address it. Hopefully you will give us another try.

Great trip to Bunling Elk Bungalow

  • 5 of 5
Marilly,

Thank you very much for your hospitality! We are getting ready to leave and wanted to let you know how much fun we had! This place is wonderful, and it's hard to believe it's only 1,000 square feet! Also, the cabin is very clean and well organized. Please let your housekeeper know that they are doing great work!

I just wanted to bring one thing to your attention...the toilet flusher seems to "sticks" a little. (It just keeps water slowly flushing). Not sure if it's something to be concerned about, but wanted to let you know. We just had to jiggle the flusher a little to make sure it would stop, so it wouldn't waste water.

Happy holidays to you! We hope you're having a great winter!

Our New Favorite Winter Getaway Destination

  • 5 of 5
We had the most delightful stay at Bugling Elk Bungalow recently. From the quick and easy reservation process, to the very clear instructions for checking in and out, our entire experience was wonderful.

The Bungalow is not only charming, but also comfortable, clean, very well-equipped, and family-friendly. Care is even given to childproofing with a gate at the bottom of the stairs and other child safety equipment provided. We stayed with our three children (ages 3, 7, and 9), who loved the upstairs bedrooms (the entire upstairs is a great kid space), and the kids entertained themselves for hours with the selection of games provided. Our biggest challenge staying here was getting our kids to bed at night because they were all having so much fun!

We especially enjoyed the hot tub for warming up and winding down each evening after playing in the snow. And the laundry room off the front porch is convenient for drying those wet swimsuits and towels.

Because the kitchen is well-stocked, we prepared most of our meals in the Bungalow. However, one evening we did get take-out from Cruiser's in Packwood, which makes the best vegetarian pizza ever! When we go back, I'm definitely ordering the veggie again!

The whole area is so beautiful, from the elk herds grazing in downtown Packwood, to the views of Mt. Rainier's snow-covered summit. The location truly is perfect. With quick access to Mt. Rainier National Park, White Pass Ski Resort, and Gifford Pinchot National Forest, there is no shortage of recreation. We especially enjoyed White Pass, which offers excellent military discounts. We were able to get a lesson, equipment rental, and lift ticket for $39 per kid with our military discount, so we spent 2 days there while our kids tried both skiing and snowboarding.

Our experience was so wonderful that this has become our new favorite winter getaway destination, and we have already booked our next visit. The owners have done a beautiful job making Bugling Elk Bungalow a charming and comfortable place to stay. We may be some of their best repeat customers!
