Old-World Charm with Modern Aminities

  • 5 of 5
Failte-Welcome to rural Ireland. Coming from America where the roads tend to be a bit wider arriving at Williamstadt House was a welcomed relief! Time to unwind with a beer by the peat fire and get cozy.
We arrived late the first day, having talked with Carole, we stopped in Whitegate for dinner since on Sunday most places are closed or close by 9PM. However, we found Carole had left us a loaf of brown bread and local jellies and butter that would make a meal if we had not had one. The cottage was welcoming with a fire in the fire box, ready for us to enjoy our few days in County Clare. Everything was as pictured on the web site so no surprises there and Carole was an excellent source of information for travel trips around the area.
The property begs to be walked and as soon as you open the gate here comes Sally with a stick. That dog loves to chase a stick and you'll see her with one constantly. The morning coffee in the courtyard brought out the kitten Boru and all the chickens and dogs. Kevin or Carole are usually there with tips for the days travel or just some local news of interest.
We only had 4 days of day trips which took us to the Cliffs of Moher, Limerick, Holy Island, Portumna, Lough Derg. So much to see and you realize that you can't see everything in one trip and really enjoy what you do see. This area has not been written up as much but is well worth the visit. My husband thought there would be nothing to see - boy was he wrong!
Whitegate is a very small village, depending on where you are coming from I'd definitely recommend getting your groceries before you get to the cottage. We stopped in Loughrea at a Super Val. They also have one in Portumna on Clonfert Ave. These are very nice, check out the ready to cook dinners in the refrigerated section. Not frozen meals but nice cuts of meat, some with vegetables. Good selection of wine, beer (of course) and all the other grocery items you'd need for your stay, don't forget the Irish butter!
The day we left Carole gave me a tour of the big house - beautifully appointed with lots of historical items around and comfortable looking beds. In the kitchen they have an old wood fire stove top, just like my husbands grandparents had in Nebraska.
The stress of travel leaves you as soon as you arrive on this doorstep. Enjoying Irish hospitality is a fond memory that I hope we can repeat some day soon. Looking forward morning coffee with Carole and Kevin in the courtyard.

We finally made it to Ireland!!

  • 5 of 5
We can not say enough about Kevin and Carol. From the first encounter to the last gracious, friendly, charming etc host. They helped us get our tire fixed on the first night and had a cozy fire going in the cottage also. The cottage was amazing!! We hated to leave. It was great being off the grid for 8 days. The area was quaint and quiet. Just what we needed. Although we traveled everyday, we looked forward to coming home each evening and doing nothing. We loved visiting the local pubs, butchers, markets etc. We felt like locals. My husband loved taking care of the chickens each day. A memory he will not forget soon. Thank you Carol. I could go on, but really I just want to go back. Thank you Kevin and Carol for making our 1st trip (not our last) to Ireland amazing. We will be back.

Bucolic, friendly refuge

  • 5 of 5
I echo the positive reviews here. Kevin and Carole are wonderful, engaging hosts who make you feel part of the area and introduce you to its local rhythms and customs as an old friend might do. The cottage lives up to those over-used words "charming" and "cozy." Chickens, a little kitten, and two pugnacious terriers became fast friends with our two young children, who loved it here every bit as much as we did. Walking, fishing, hanging out at the local (and even some shooting) made for unforgettable memories. Kevin had had a rich and eventful life and chatting with him in the courtyard was always a pleasure. We all missed the Williamstadt House as soon as we left it, and if ever we return to Ireland again, as I hope we do, we will definitely make a point of coming here again.

Fabulous place and hosts

  • 5 of 5
We (family of 4 including kids age 8 and 13) loved our week at the cottage. Kevin and Carole are fabulous hosts and made our visit unique and memorable. The house is cozy, comfortable and ideally located to explore the Lough Derg region...or just hang around the property with the cat, dogs, chickens and hosts.

Idyllic rural retreat

  • 5 of 5
We have just left the gamekeepers cottage after 2 weeks of bliss. The house and grounds are totally unique. Kevin, Carole and Emily are great and so helpful regarding things to do and places to see. Kevin is full of great stories and many a morning was spent chatting with him over coffee in the courtyard. Our children loved all the animals, especially the kittens and dogs, aswell as the swing and hammock. My husband loved the woodchopping experience (ask Kevin about this one). We barbequed one night and cooked over the fire in 'the pub' (one of the outhouses) too. All in all it was great. I'm going to miss the cock crowing tomorrow.

A charming piece of Irish history!

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at The Gamekeeper"s Cottage a few weeks ago. All ammenities were provided, animals were friendly, and Carole and Kevin couldn't have been more helpful. We used the cottage as a base camp, while we drove around the area. The beauty of the Irish countryside, the warmth of the people, and the richness of their history will remain with us always!
