Woodstock Estate Rental Photos and Description

Estate, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-5)

If you want to fall asleep to the stereo lullaby of frog croaks while watching the spectacle of fireflies competing with stars, this is the place.

The property is within 10 minute walking distance through the neighboring Comeau Property, a nature preserve with hiking trails to town. The Cottage House faces the stream, waterfall, pond and great lawn on one side and the woods and field on the other. The house is a freshly architect-renovated 800sft two bedroom, one bath, sleeping 5. We provide linens, towels and other necessities.

Frederick Dana Marsh, father of the well known Social Realist painter Reginald Marsh, married Mabel Van Alstyne in 1930, starting a notable artistic partnership as the Van Alstyne Marsh Collection that was later acquired by the Smithsonian Institution. Their home was unique for Woodstock—'It was in the background of the Mona Lisa; a Van Gogh landscape; a train ride through Tuscany—ball shaped junipers; a pond that bracketed the house; expansive lawns; a gathering of birches. But most of all, big cone shaped cedar trees. It is a marvelous thing to look up at backlit clouds at sunset—see the intrusion of cedar peaks, pointing up like soft missles and the erratic flight of mosquito catcher bats making ninety degree turns down the channels between the trees. A photographer friend was here last weekend and I told her, “Don’t worry about framing the picture, just point and shoot. The landscaper framed it for you seventy years ago.” ' Here I quote Austin Metze, who knows this piece of land long before it put a spell on us.

To be there is to inhabit an idyllic painting. Sit in the property's own Hidden Chair Waterfall or chill at the secluded sandy beach swim hole a one minute stroll away through enchanted woods, take a hike up Milk Mountain or up the trails of the neighboring nature preserve for a Sunday brunch in town and visit to the flea market. Or just read a good book under a cypress tree.

The Cottage House is on the same property as the Pond House, listed on VRBO www.vrbo.com/373377. Both houses are very private. There are three houses next to each other, the Cottage House, the old Farm House that is permanently rented to our dear Lainey and Austin, and the Pond House. The Cottage House faces the stream and the great lawn on one side and the woods and field on the other.

High Season rates apply to all holidays, at a three night minimum stay.

Scenic tranquility

  • 5 of 5
We have enjoyed a wonderful week here with our 5 year old. The cottage was charming, well stocked, and impeccably clean. We loved the mix of rustic and contemporary design. The location is perfect for taking a break from the hustle and bustle - the cottage provides great privacy, being situated well off the road, facing a huge lawn and a babbling brook. The listing photos, as beautiful as they are, do not do justice to the relaxing effect of taking in the fresh air and the beautiful views while sitting out on the terrace. Our son loved playing in the stream and finding his way through the grass "maze".
The owners were absolutely delightful and extremely helpful with restaurant suggestions and the like. There's no shortage of nearby great eateries, with downtown Woodstock a short walk away, and Saugerties within a 15 minute drive. The area is a nature lover's delight, with hiking trails starting directly across the stream from the property. Opus 40 is a great nearby attraction for the architecturally inclined and those with an appreciation for enormousness and human endeavor.
Thank you, Nin and Ralf, for such an enjoyable getaway!

Charming Cottage

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Cottage House for one week with our two young boys, (aged 4 and 20 months). The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. The kitchen and bathroom are modern, yet the rest of the house is more rustic in style. The location is quiet and beautiful, set away from any roads. We particularly enjoyed relaxing on the garden in the afternoons and having early dinners outside on the terrace. It was lovely listening to the stream at the bottom of the garden. Nin and Ralf were really helpful and on hand if we needed anything.
We ate at Oriole 9 (twice), Sunfrost Farms, Yum Yum Noodles and the Phonecia Diner on route 28 (twice), all are really good and recommended. Though a bit of a drive, the Catskill Scenic Trail was a really lovely day out. Walking with two young boys meant we only managed the bit between Stamford and Hobart but it was worth the trip and we had a lovely picnic along the trail.

Perfect Relaxing Getaway

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I were searching for a peaceful escape as our mini-honeymoon and could not have asked for a better place. It was beyond perfect to walk into the cottage for the first time with the lights dimmed (a wonderful feature in every room) and music playing. The playlist, as others have mentioned, was great, and we left it playing all night. Nin, the owner and her neighbors were so friendly and genuinely warm. They offered suggestions on restaurants and and things to do. Oriole 9 has the most amazing breakfast! We only wish we could have stayed longer and explored more of the area.

Just about perfect

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful week-long vacation in the cottage house. The cottage was just as pictured and very comfortable. The grounds are stunning. The creek (with waterfall!) that runs just behind the house was an endless source of enchantment for our five year old, as was the large backyard for running and playing. You really can walk to town, and we enjoyed being able to grill at the cottage or go out for meals as we felt like it. We hiked, climbed Overlook Mountain, went kayaking at North-South Lake, and even caught sunfish at nearby Onteora Lake. It was a really wonderful escape from the city, and we definitely plan to go again! Owners are warm and attentive; we couldn't have asked for anything more.

cute cottage on gorgeous property

  • 4 of 5
We had a wonderful time at this cute cozy cottage, which sits on a beautiful historical property just steps from downtown Woodstock. Nestled on a lake by a stream there are tons of walking trails around and a spot to light a fire under the stars. You will enjoy this charming retreat.

Lovely place for a mini reunion with friends!

  • 5 of 5
My two college friends and I had a wonderful mini reunion/long weekend here. It was just what we wanted - a quiet, peaceful, cozy place where we could chat, cook some simple meals, listen to music and relax - and from which we could venture forth for some low-key outings! The view out back and the soft sound of the rushing stream/river were so lovely! The pictures showed it off exactly. We loved the artsy decor and great music mix left for our listening pleasure (would like to get that playlist!). There was a very good speaker system for use with our own ipods, etc. and good wireless and cellphone access - which was important to us. The kitchen had all the basic tools. The woodstove kept us warm. And the owner's tips/instructions were so helpful - we took some eating recommendations to heart and did both a hike up Overlook Mt and walk in the Comeau property. Thanks for a great stay!
