This charming, comfortable cottage is located on Lion Hill Road in the small lake community of Big Pond.
Access to the water is a three-minute walk across the road to a shared dock. A short walk down the road to the left will take you to the public beach with sand and a roped area for children to swim, but the lake is also shallow near our dock. The cottage faces east, but gets sun all day long because of a three-sided wraparound deck, on which is also located a fantastic large outdoor shower with hot land cold water and a picnic table over looking a Cezanne-type woods. Houses are on both sides, the one on the south is set way back from the road and the one on the north is hidden by a privacy fence. The area is very quiet mid-week. The house sleeps 5 in two bedrooms: one with a double bed and the other with a double and a single bed. All have excellent mattresses. (If necessary, someone can sleep on the sun porch.) Both bedrooms have celing fans. and electric heaters for chilly evenings.
The rest of the cottage consists of a breakfast nook, a large well-appointed kitchen (sorry, no dishwasher), a full width living room with two couches, wood-burning Franklin stove, VCR, DVD, and cassette/tape deck. The sun porch as a couch and two chairs as well as a dining table that seats 6 very comfortably. Most furnishings are country antiques with an occasion Oriental rug. Lots of lamps with decent wattage for reading. LaFuma lounges are available for your enjoyment as are a kayak and row boat.. Oars, paddles, and life preservers plus chairs for Tanglewood can be found in the shed to the rear of the house. There is ample room to park two cars behind the house. Sheets and towels are not supplied. Otis has an excellent Laundromat.
Shopping is at the Price Shopper in Lee or Great Barrington (the latter is better), but locally are the The Otis Egg store, and the Other Brother Fish store. In East Otis, Katie's, has good meat and a takeout area for fried chicken, clams, etc. Papa's, also in East Otis, specializes in organic foods and has a local market on Saturday mornings. This is also the local service station. The local bar/restaurant is the Knox Trail Inn with music on weekends in East Otis. There is a popular Italian restaurant in Otis. Don't expect too much of anything being open in the Berkshires after 10:00 unless you go to Railroad Street in Great Barrington or the Knox Trail Inn. This is not the land of dance clubs!
Activities and Attractions:
Big Pond is very free of people mid-week but, of course, on weekends families congregate for water skiing, etc.
The area is culturally rich. Big Pond is very close to Jacob's Pillow (10 minutes) minutes; It's accessible to other cultural highlights: 30 minutes to Great Barrington (cineplex and restaurants)and Stockbridge (Berkshire Playhouse), Lee (outlet mall and Joe's dinner). Allow more time for Tanglewood, Shakespeare and Company, and at least one hour or more for Williamstown Playhouse, Clark Museum and MOCA in North Adams. That is a day's jaunt. The Appalachian trail cuts between routes 23 and 8. The Monument Mountain hike is near Great Barrington. Lots of other events are listed in Berkshire Week, a Thursday supplement of the Berkshire Eagle at Papa's.
