This rental is located in the historic district of Springs in East Hampton. The area was settled by farmers and fishermen in the mid-1600's. Later the summer visitors, artists and writers came to the area, including painters Jackson Pollock and Willem DeKooning, whose studios are within 1 mile of the house (Pollock's is open to the public). The historic Springs center has a church, community center/gallery ('Ashwagh Hall'), library, blacksmith shop museum, cemetery, and a general store. There is also a liquor store and pizza parlor within 1/2 mile of the house. Views over pastures, past historic houses to the bays are many. There are art exhibits, talks, music, a weekly farmer's market in Springs center, less than a mile from the house. The Hamptons Villages, with shopping, bars and restaurants, wineries, theatres, music venues, pharmacies, libraries, book stores, and spectacular Atlantic Ocean Beaches are a 10-15 minute drive. The more laid back atmosphere and calm waters at the Gardiners Bay beaches in Springs are even closer. This rental is very private and peaceful, set amid pastures and woods on a private lane. The waters of Accabonac Harbor are less than 1/4 mile from the house where a Nature Conservancy waterfront Preserve and hiking trail provide a path through extraordinary scenic beauty. A woods trail is accessible on foot from the house. The rental is dog friendly with a 1/2 acre fenced area and a dog door. Excellent sailing, boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking, surfing, windsurfing, swimming are all available. One can pick up coffee, pastry and fine prepared foods at the Springs General Store, a fine assortment of wines at the Franey Liquor Store and just sit on the back deck and grill or just relax. On another day, a visitor can join the crowd in the Villages and on the ocean beaches for the peak season offerings of the Hamptons (food, entertainment, the Hampton Classic Horsehow, parties, art openings, writers readings). The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society has regularly scheduled hikes and maintains miles of beautiful woodland and beach trails to beautiful places off the beaten track where one can picnic or swim.
