The Cottage des Hortensias is self-catering accommodation located the grounds of a calm, quiet French chateau B&B. What was once the concierge’s house has been transformed into a spacious 3-bedroom, 2-bath that sleeps seven people. Spacious (130 sq. m. or 1400 sq. ft.) and bright, it features a private courtyard on the front side of the cottage and a small hedge-lined yard in the back.
With over 20 acres of gardens and woods at your disposal, it's a countryside oasis that's within easy striking distance of some of France's best-loved sites.
It's ideal for families who want to slow down and spend a few days visiting Versailles, Chartres, Fontainbleau, Paris and even the eastern end of the Loire Valley. We can also tell you about many lesser known places to see, local markets, etc.
Versailles is 30 minutes away by car, while Chartres is just 20 minutes away.
The cottage is situated on a large private estate that has been in the family for several generations. On the property sits a chateau, which we have been running as a B&B for nearly 20 years, and another cottage. One of the cottages was the old gamekeepers house. The other was the concierge's house. One was restored in 2007 and the other in 2011. We rent the cottage and run the B&B as a way of maintaining the property and keeping it in the family.
As the anniversary of our last trip to France rolls around, I realized I neglected to write this important review. We had a wonderful time in the cottage, which easily slept seven people--our family of six and my mother. All beds were super comfortable, and of all the kitchens of all the apartments/cottages/houses we have ever rented, Virginie's was the best. She puts in everything she herself would want. We cooked a full Christmas dinner here.
Jonvilliers is a charming village, the grounds are beautiful for lovely afternoon walks, and you are an easy drive from Rambouillet, Chartres, and many castles of the Loire valley. We had such a great week here. Virginie and Richard are wonderful hosts, and helped us with a multitude of problems (over Christmas!!), including lost luggage and the need for a doctor when my husband's cold threatened to become something more serious. We spent a month in France, and this week was certainly one of the highlights! Yes, we will certainly be back, as long as Richard and Virginie don't mind that it took me so long to post this. Do visit this lovely cottage, if you are craving a bit of "real" France, and also want to have access to some of the most spectacular sights the country has to offer, with your own wonderful home to return to each day.
My husband, adult daughter and I spent five days here in May and loved every minute. It's enormous: three large bedrooms, two huge baths, an open-concept living-dining-kitchen area, and two walled gardens. Colorfully decorated, clean, and well-equipped. We felt very comfortable. (And thank you, Virginie, for stocking our fridge with milk, juice, coffee and other essentials.)
The location, in a tiny village and surrounded by farm fields and woods, is quiet, private and gorgeous. A short drive across the rapeseed fields brings you to several towns that have restaurants and bakeries. We used the house as our base for touring Versailles, Chartres, Dreux and Rambouillet -- all are within easy driving distance. But the best part of every day was coming "home" to this restful, bright home nestled on the grounds of an elegant old manor house.
The cottage is situated about 1 hour southwest of Paris, between Versailles (home of the famous chateau) and Chartres (home of the famous cathedral). It is an idea base for trips into Paris, Versailles, Chartres, Fontainbleau and Giverny. It is located in a quiet country village. You will need a car if you plan on staying here.
Paris is a 45 minute train ride from our local station in Epernon.
The eastern end of the Loire Valley is an easy day trip.
