Mas de Chenes is a charming restored and modernised 18th century farmhouse beautifully situated in a residential area, a short walk to the picturesque Provencal chateau village, Ansouis, a listed 'most beautiful villages of France' and 25 min to Aix en Provence. The property enjoys the peace of a country setting yet is not isolated. In the village you can find a bakery, with groceries, cafe, post office, newspaper shop, small boutiques, tea room and gourmet restaurant. Food lovers are in paradise with colourful markets in Ansouis and surrounding villages such as Lourmarin and Curcuron, also known for their fine restaurants and alluring home, clothing and art shops. Renowned vineyards are within a five minute drive in every direction. The property itself bordered by vineyards, is nestled in the valley between the Luberon mountains with views from both the house and grounds. Every effort is made for relaxed charm.

The Garden and Heated Pool: The focus of living in Provence is the garden. Mas de Chenes has various different garden spaces including a cherry and apricot orchard, a playing field, a rolling hill that leads to a small creek (dry in summer), oak tree groves, courtyards, hammocks, secluded benches and tables and more. Cypress, olive and pine trees dot the property. We have our own herbs including rosemary, mint and basil. In season, fruit (including fig, plum, pear) and summer flowers -lavender and roses blossom. The tiled 12x6m. pool, with safety cover, is sloping so that it is deep only in the centre, not on the sides. There is plenty of space to both swim laps and play games. As the pool is fed by our well, we heat the pool with a conversion heater guaranteeing perfect temperatures for evening and day use. The pool is cleaned weekly. The pool patio includes comfortable lounge and reading chairs as well as a hammock. Within view throughout the property are the gentle slopes of the Luberon mountains.

Family holiday ideal: We are a family of five and use Mas des Chenes as our holiday home. It is stacked with books and games, for indoors and out, and equipped with comfort and convenience in mind. There is enough space for everyone to enjoy privacy yet spatial arrangements which welcome group activities. Ansouis is located within a protected National Park area and benefits from this rural peace. Leisure activities such as biking, hiking, golf and riding are close at hand. Visitors are also drawn to Ansouis and its charming neighbour villages, Lourmarin and Curcuron for their markets, concerts, gourmet restaurants, chic shops and great bakeries-Ansouis is also famous for its home-made ice cream. Aix-en-Provence, a 30min. drive, is a graceful University town with festivals, museums, markets and shops. Within a one hour drive are other tourist destinations including Avignon, St. Remy, Les Baux, Menerbes, Bonnieux, Apt, Arles, Roussillon, Gordes, Marseilles, Cassis, the Camargue, Gorges de Verdun ...

About Deborah Werbner and Barry Glazer

We are an American British family of 5 who have lived in France, Belgium and London. We purchased Mas des Chenes when moving from Brussels to London as a get-away from the city where we could relax and spend quality time with family and friends and continue to enjoy a certain French lifestyle with great food, wine, museums, markets and fabulous scenery.

Why Deborah Werbner and Barry Glazer chose Ansouis

We were seduced by the beautiful setting of our home on over four acres of mature gardens and trees, surrounded by vineyards. The huge pool is much appreciated as we are a family of swimmers. And of course, the stone built home from the 1800s has a character of its own, sheltering us from the heat in the summer and staying dry and warm in the winter.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The house is located in a quiet peaceful setting yet not isolated, so one feels secure and serene. It is within walking distance to the village of Ansouis and an easy drive to Lourmarin and Cucuron both with fun cafes, markets and shops. With Aix en Provence only 25 minutes away, one can also go into the 'big' city, with its music and dance festivals, designer shopping and museums, if one so desires. There are fantastic local restaurants, a cinema showing VO films and great hiking. Further afield one can do day trips to the Alpilles , Avignon, Arles or the North Luberon villages, all within a 45 minute drive away. However, to be honest, we are often very lazy and simply spend our days by the pool, with the latest summer reads, cooking the freshest vegetables and generally just totally relaxing.

A poplar lined drive bordering the cherry and apricot orchard leads to the stone courtyard with barbecue, seating for 8 - perfect for morning and evening meals. Lunch is best at the tree shaded teak table overlooking the 12x6m.heated pool behind the house. A 200 year old oak tree shades another eating area, lit by a hanging lantern for evenings. The 4.5acres grounds abound in hidden reading spots, spacious play areas, mountain vistas and walks by vineyards around the property. A vaulted dining room separates the fully equipped eat-in kitchen from the comfortable double lounge, with overstuffed sofas, colourful cushions, country French furniture, books and games. The back lounge, with stone fireplace, tv, stereo doubles as a studio space (easel incl.). Upstairs are three bright and spacious country French bedrooms and sitting area. Every effort is made for relaxed charm with light and comfortable accommodation.
