This property has to be amongst the best in Stoupa. It has all the ingredients to provide you with the perfect holiday. It is located on the edge of a magnificent sandy beach with clear, shallow water. The charming and friendly owners RENA and KOSTAS and FAMILY will give you a holiday to remember. They run the taverna to a very high standard and have gained a reputation for excellent food with home cooked specialities available throughout the day. The hotel also has a number of large double bedrooms with sea view, fridge, tv and air conditioning in addition to the self catering units featured here. There is also the possibility of a third bed on the mezzanine floor.

Apartment no 6 is accessed up five steps and is suitable for four people. It has two separate bedrooms. One bedroom has a double bed, two bedside cabinets, a fitted wardrobe and a dressing table with a mirror. Double doors lead to a balcony with a garden view. The other bedroom has two single beds, two bedside cabinets, a fitted wardrobe and a dressing table with a mirror and also a TV. Both bedrooms have aircon. Double doors lead onto a balcony with a garden view. There is a table with four chairs on this balcony. The kitchenette is separate with cooking facilities, crockery and all utensils and a fridge together with a table and four chairs. There is a door from the kitchen leading to the shower room. This apartment is suitable for a family or for two couples.

Local area information Kalogria is one of Stoupa’s three beautiful beaches and takes its name from the Greek word for nun and legend says that it is named for a nun who drowned for love of a prince because she was unable to marry him. It has fine golden sand and crystal clear turquoise waters with fresh water springs and is fringed by tamarisk trees. The fantastic mountain backdrop is provided by the foothills of the Taygetos mountain range. There are sun loungers and parasols available. If you want to be more active you can often find volleyball being played on the sand. It is within a couple of minutes walk of supermarkets, chemist, bars and tavernas of which there are several directly on the beach. This area of the Mani is famous for olive oil, Kalamata black olives, oregano, honey and wines and the clear liquid spirit called ouzo. It is also the place where Nikos Kazantzakis wrote his book Zorba the Greek. Over the headland, Stoupa village beach has a tiny harbour.

Some of the major sites of the Peloponnese are within easy reach of Stoupa. Nearby there are many traditional villages such as Aghios Nikolaos with its colourful fishing fleet and Kardamili with its white pebble beach, which can be visited on foot. Further afield by car you have the opportunity to visit Mistras, a unique Byzantine fortress town, the ancient town of Sparti, Areopoli where a Saturday market is held, Gythion with the octopus drying in the sunshine and Olympia, a world famous archaeological site. Monemvasia is also within reach, the name means one entrance and the only approach to the town is along a narrow bridge. The caves of Diros can also be visited with the opportunity for an atmospheric boat ride through magnificent caves. The other finger of the Peloponnese which can be seen from Stoupa is also nearby with Methoni, Koroni with its Venetian fortress, Finicunda and Pylos. For those who like shopping Kalamata and Messini are good possibilities.

Although our nearest airport is Kalamata, some of our guests may prefer to come to us via Athens and experience a day sightseeing there. We can suggest a reasonably priced comfortable hotel in Athens which offers a pick up service from Athens airport and then a transportation service to either the bus or train station after your stay included in the price.

A little bit of paradise

We've had to overcome our desire to keep this beautiful location secret to write this review. Whilst we have travelled much of mainland Greece and the islands, we have been to Stoupa almost every year for the past two decades and we always to try stay at Hotel Kalogria.

The hotel / restaurant/ taverna has everything you could want for restful holiday. The very special hospitality from Rena, Kostas, Christos and Alex is second to none. Whilst remaining essentially Greek, they go out of their way to make people from all countries welcome. They are wonderful with children and celebrate people's birthdays and anniversaries. If you are struggling to learn Greek they will provide help and encouragement.

The rooms are clean and comfortable; all the staff are friendly; the home-cooked food is consistently fantastic; and it is only two steps to one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece.

As a bonus the Hotel Kalogria has the the most palatial restaurant toilets in the whole of the Peloponnese!
