We are 'in the country' but near everything. Very private - own 5 acres of land on both sides of the road. Flat land. Walk the road in moonlight along the Winhall River. See wildlife and trout. This is Vermont unchanged.

Our Vermont second home is a true refuge from the stress of modern life. Anne and I have spent 15 years renovating and updating this 1865 Vermont farmhouse. The house had been last renovated by a NYC banker beginning around 1968. In 1997, we bought the property from him, which we have furnished, in part, with antiques from our parents. Except for the third floor dormer and the first floor family room addition, the basic structure is as it was originally constructed by Dr. Orris Pier after the conclusion of the Civil War.

Please take a look our Google photo album. There, you will see the 1869 map showing the location of our home - then the Pier residence.

Back then, Dr. Pier was a Methodist minister and Rawsonville was a tiny farming and logging community. On the map, you see a one room school house, which functions today as a community center. You see the Skinner general store, which is now the location of the Equipe bicycle and snowboarding shop. And, that's it, apart from the handful of residences depicted on the map. Rawsonville, and our road are almost as thinly populated today as in 1869. Nothing very much has changed on our road in 148 years. The brook still flows behind the house. And, down from our place, the Winhall River still runs alongside our road.

What drew us here was the genuineness of old Vermont on a country road. We own 5 acres on both sides of the road. There is nothing but fields and trees from the back of our house to the banks of the Winhall River 600 ft away. Across the road from the front of the house, our property there is part of 1 sq mile of timberland in the Green Mountain National Forest.

We are 'in the country' but near everything. There is privacy here, but not isolation.

You can walk to Tony's Pizza and eat pizza of NYC quality. You can drive 2 minutes to the Winhall Market and buy gourmet everything. In 10 minutes, you can be parking in the Stratton Mountain Parking Garage to go skiing or have luxury dining at Verde's Restaurant.

Or, just stay at home and prepare your own meals in our modern kitchen with Vermont stone slate countertops and red birch cabinets. We have almost every kind of board game imaginable (chess, checkers, cards and more).

Sit outside on our pond deck and solar lite pond house to feed our 5+ lb trout; or to just enjoy the muted stirring of the brook and the gushing waterfall. Walk under the stars and moonlight down our road with a glass of wine along the Winhall River. Across the road, you can park extra cars in front of our barn and walk through our gladed forest of tall pine trees. These are the simple pleasures you will long remember.

Of course, you can be 'wired in' to the outside world through our high speed wireless internet and watch movies or play games 24/7 on our new 42' LED TVs. The Red Fox tavern, with its Irish atmosphere, is 10 minutes away. The former Outback Restaurant (now Whisky' Dick's) is 2 minutes away. Drive 10 minutes to Jamaica for gourmet dining at the Three Mountain Inn or Solo's in South Londonderry. We feel pretty spoiled here.

Please take a moment to glance at the photos in our Google album, which will give you a realistic impression of what our place is all about. Click on the photos for a descriptive caption.

We have lived in NJ in the same Victorian house for more than 35 years. Born and raised outside of Buffalo, NY in Williamsville. Anne grew up in Haddonfield, NJ outside of Philadelphia.

Peter Engelhardt purchased this farmhouse in 1997

We own 5 acres on both sides of the road. There is nothing but fields and trees from the back of our house to the banks of the Winhall River 600 ft away. Across the road from the front of the house, our property there is part of 1 sq mile of timberland in the Green Mountain National Forest.

Experience genuine old Vermont on a country road. Here, you can unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures offered by our rural setting and ambiance. You have privacy but not isolation. You can always pick up the pace. The ski hill is 10 minutes away. So are great dining and other activities.

COMFORTABLE AND SPACIOUS HOME ON GORGEOUS PROPERTY

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful week at this beautiful and charming Vermont farmhouse situated on an amazing property. The kids had a wonderful time playing in the onsite pond and spacious yard. Situated near the scenic Winhall River, there were beautiful places to walk right outside the door and lots of fun attractions nearby. The house was very comfortable for our group of four families, and the owners were very helpful and accommodating. Many people in the group have already said they want to return here for our next gathering.

BEAUTIFUL AND COMFORTABLE FARMHOUSE

  • 5 of 5
This is a beautifully renovated farmhouse minutes from the base of Stratton Mountain. We stayed with our extended family including our young grandchildren. There was plenty of room for everyone, including an awesome kids room located on the 3rd floor. Bathrooms and kitchen were updated and spotlessly clean. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals and was spacious enough that several of us could be cooking without feeling crowded. The owner was highly responsive to our needs and provided us with extensive information for any issue that might arise. It was certainly a wonderful home for our big family.

NICE VACATION SPOILED BY OWNER'S CONTROL ISSUES

Nice vacation spoiled by owner's control issues
  • 1 of 5
First the positives: the house was clean and well kept. The kitchen was well equipped. The location was close to the ski area as advertised.

The negatives:
1.The owner fails to disclaim that two bedrooms on the second floor share a bathroom with doors leading to each bathroom that don't lock; so if you are not with family, using that bathroom is tricky and cumbersome.

2. The owner, Peter, is a control-freak. After sending a dozen pages of instructions he insisted on everything in the house to be left the way we found it (including the input on his TV); which is impossible when 4 families with children are using the house for 5 days. So instead of enjoying our vacation some of us had to worry about memorizing his house rule-book.

3. The owner failed to inspect the house after the people who were there before us during Christmas and accused us of breaking things in a very harsh and impolite manner. Moreover, a day later he admitted that nothing major was broken anyway, but never apologized for the harsh accusations. The things he imputed to us were minor things anyway, which even if were broken, a normal owner would have just fixed them himself without complaining after charging 6k for 5 days (i.e. the switch on the electric panel, the screen on a window; and switching cables on his TV).

4. The view, the property is very close to some construction/transportation businesses and in the winter the view to one side of the house is to a junkyard.

In conclusion, a nice house, but would never vacation there again because of the owner. I would not recommend this house to anyone.

Owner's Response: The writer fails to mention that a storm knocked out the electric power to the house and surrounding area on Saturday night. My caretaker came to the house at 11 PM and set up the generator, so that our guests would not be in any discomfort.
The writer also fails to mention that the frame of one sofa bed was broken during their stay. The person on the lease agreed to pay for the repairs.
The group left us a lovely note signed by all persons staying in the house, thanking us for the good time they had.
The bathroom on the left side of the second floor is described as having a "Jack and Jill" configuration between the bedrooms. Both access doors lock from the inside.
It would be pointless to debate many of the other claims because they are plain wrong. This review was submitted more than three weeks after the group left. It is not written by the person, with whom I closely dealt and signed the lease. We have never had a complaint from any group before this.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

  • 5 of 5
We have unfortunately left your beautiful home. We all had a better time than anticipated and the snow couldn't have been more perfect. I have never been to a rental that felt so much like home! The location is amazing, so we had so much time on the mountain. Saturday weather conditions were brutal but Sunday was a perfect day! Thank you so much!!

Future renters: the owners, Pete and Anne, went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Suggested restaurants, things to make sure to bring, and stores and sites in the area. They also have people close by in case anything goes wrong. There was a projected 12-18 inches of snow to fall the morning of our arrival and they let us come up the night before to make sure we were safe and the snow was plowed before we woke up every morning so we didn't get snowed in. I would recommend this house to any party big or small and hope to come back myself!
