THE BIRDHOUSE AT WILLARD BEACH ~ A MAINE COTTAGE AT THE BEACH

South Portland Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 1 full bath, sleeps 5

Located 60 steps from Willard Beach in South Portland, Maine, the Birdhouse at Willard Beach is the perfect place to kick back and relax. A comfortable seashore cottage, the Birdhouse has three bedrooms (a queen and a single downstairs and two twins upstairs) and one bath. Furnished in eclectic and informal cottage style, you will find all of the comforts of home.

Willard Beach is a little known gem – a mile long sandy beach just minutes from downtown Portland. With a seasonal beach house with restrooms, snack bar, showers and a playground it is the perfect place to spend a summer’s day. From the house as well as the beach you can enjoy a great view of the islands, Casco Bay and the ship channel. The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a short walk not only to the beach, but also Willard Square – home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops, a homemade ice cream shop. Also within walking distance are several restaurants, lighthouses, parks and a live theater, and it’s no more than a 10-minute drive across the bridge to downtown Portland.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is a fun and informal house with three bedrooms, one bath, and all the amenities you could wish for: Flat screen TV, DVD, Wireless Internet, W&D, gas grill, an outside deck and fenced in yard. We invite you to bring your well behaved dog (with deposit), but must regretfully ask that you leave your cats at home.

The Birdhouse at Willard Beach is available by the week during the summer, and during other times of year with a 3-night minimum. Longer term rentals during the off-season considered by special arrangement.

Guestbook comments from the owner
We had a most memorable Thanksgiving week at the Birdhouse. It was perfect for us. Empty nester Mom, Dad and a 20 lb. cockapoo needed a place to stay to meet and spend Thanksgiving with our daughter's fiancé’s family. The fenced back yard provided secure outdoor space for the pooch for short trips out to relieve himself. This was especially appreciated for the last trip before bed. (no leash, no walk after dark required). The beach provided all the entertainment and exercise all three of us needed. What a place for dogs and what a dog show! (If you are a dog lover who enjoys watching well behaved dogs play, the show we saw should not be missed) Even for non-dog lovers the beach provides plenty for the eye to feast on. Freighters, tugs, ferries etc. headed into/out of Portland pass right in front of the beach a mile or so out. We were able to watch lobsterman haul pots just off the beach. (take binoculars for that). The seascape panorama is magnificent. The house is all that is represented in the publicity and more. We were charmed and looking forward to our next visit. The Birdhouse provided us with a most memorable week in Maine. Susan and Tony run a classy operation! Sign us up again please!

While we live most of the year in Washington state, we love to spend as much time as we can in Maine, where our sons both live. We frequently drive from coast to coast so our basset hound, Nika, can come with us. Since we cannot be in Maine all the time, we really enjoy sharing our cottage with others when we cannot be there~ and love hearing about what they enjoyed while at the house.

Susan and Tony purchased this cottage in 2011

We used to own a house on Peaks Island, and while it was great, we find that we love being on the mainland and watching the ferry go by without having to try to catch it in order to get home! The Willard Beach neighborhood has always been special. We used to bring the boys to the beach when they were small and we lived in Portland (many years ago) - and now they get to come visit it as adults ~ and Nika gets to walk on the best dog beach in southern Maine!

How can you not love a house that is steps away from the beach, one of the best bakeries in New England AND a homemade ice cream shop? Previously owned by a lobsterman whose hobby was making unique birdhouses, we fell in love with the cottage as soon as we saw it.

We returned to the Birdhouse for the third year running this summer (and chose dates for next summer, too). The location and feel of the house continue to be a mix between convenient and cozy that makes a perfect balance for a temporary home away from home. Susan, Tony and their caretaker are not only very welcoming, but they keep track of all of the details so that you can walk right in and begin relaxing. Plus, with two small kids, being this close to a family-friendly beach (not to mention a bakery and ice cream shop) covers most of our everyday needs without needing to get in the car. Perfect.

Another great vacation at the Birdhouse

  • 5 of 5
This was our second year staying at the Birdhouse and we had another enjoyable week. Our son didn't want to go home he enjoyed the beach, Scratch Bakery and of course Willard Scoops. The cottage is a perfect place to kick back and relax. The location of the cottage is also great if you are interested in day trips. This year we went hiking by Cape Elizabeth, flew a kite at Bug Light Park and also took a trip up to The Maine Wildlife Park. We recommend the Birdhouse as it is well maintained and offers anything you might need for a week at the beach.

Best Week Ever at The Birdhouse

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I have three young girls, and were looking for a place to rest, but also make memories for our family. The Birdhouse was everything advertised and more! It’s comfortable and we immediately felt at home here. South Portland is a laid-back, restful place to be, but only a few minutes drive into downtown Portland, with incredible restaurants, cool shops and places to visit. Every day we walked just a few steps to Willard Beach, which our girls loved. Almost every morning we walked to the bakery and ice cream shop, which only took a few minutes and would have been worth a 45 minute drive! The front porch is a relaxing place to read or play games. We had a lot of fun around the dining room table as well. The neighborhood is extremely quaint and peaceful - we have three kids and slept with the windows open for naps and at night, and never had any problems with people being too loud. If you are looking for a comfortable cottage feel, with a close walk to the beach and a short drive into a great city, this is your place.

My family and I had an amazing time at the Birdhouse. We enjoyed the location and walked to the beach each day. Susan and Tony were great and the house was just as described. Willard Scoops has the best ice cream ever!

If you seek peace, this is the place for you.

We are busy people who value peace and nature. Our week at the "Bird House" provided a sense of quiet as well as soft exposure to the raw vibrant beauty that surrounded us during our stay. Each morning we walked the still sands of the cove, taking time to stand above the rocky bluff to do our morning Qui Gong, Chinese breathing and stretching. We sat Zen Buddhist zazen "meditation" and did yoga on the enclosed front porch. At night we read and talked and listened to silence, interrupted only by the fog horn. Not once did we turn on the television. We are readers and thinkers and I, of course, found a mystery novel among the surprise lending library that is offered, talking the book home and leaving one of my favorites in exchange - an Irish classic, Among Women. Simplicity filled our time at the cottage and fueled our day trips to Portland to eat raw oysters at J's at the port and lobster everywhere. We visited one of my best friends who runs one of the best newspapers in America - the Portland Press Herald - and visited with a British cousin of my wife's war bride mother who had not seen my wife since she was a little girl, more than 50 years ago. We connected with Maine. We found refuge and shelter in the comfort of the "Bird House." Our trip was perfect..
