Ad didn't add up for us

Our family (3 ppl) stayed in this apartment over spring break in March 2013. Having frequently used HomeAway over the past 7 years, this is the first time we have encountered a place that didn’t meet our expectations, as set by the ad.
On the positive front, the place is all about location, well situated in Midtown. It’s a 1 floor walk up on the back of the street, making it easy to get to and away from the street noise. The coffee/sandwich shop downstairs is convenient and tasty for a quick meal and the corner store across the street has basics for a week’s stay. The dry cleaners next door will do laundry by the pound, ready same day, making the lack of washer/dryer doable for those who prefer to pack light or are here for a longer stay.
I wouldn’t go so far to say that you’ll be living “like in the movies”, as suggested by the posting headline. While fairly large for Midtown, the space is not well utilized. The open design (no doors & half walls) makes for very limited privacy. Both beds have old mattresses near the floor that are very uncomfortable and noisy enough to be heard throughout the apartment when you turn or adjust. This is joins a cacophony of other infrastructure, including loud machinery outside the bedroom windows & the myriad noises associated with the steam radiator. The bathroom is only accessible through the 2nd bedroom, so be prepared for interruptions. With no dressers, and only one small closet, you should be prepared to live out of your suitcases off the floor of the living room. If you’re here in the cooler months, be sure to pack cozy clothing for lounging and sleeping as radiated heat seems to be closely rationed by the landlord and space heaters & thin comforters aren’t enough to offer relief. While towels are supplied (2/person/week), consider bringing your own unless you don’t mind drying yourself with something akin to a burlap bag. WiFi was available as advertised, however there was very limited bandwidth. The router would freeze altogether when more than one device was online & neither FB nor Skype would load completely.
This place could have been extraordinary with a little attention by the owner. They mention a complete remodel of the kitchen/BA, but the toilet paper holder and kitchen faucet were broken when we arrived. The coffee table was wobbly as well. All these things added up to make this the worst experience we've had with a rental like this.
