We thought the website pictures of Hellnar looked lovely and when we actually arrived there we were even more impressed by the beauty of the location. We were lucky to see it at its best with the sun shining on the deep blue sea. We took many photos looking from the house to the church. The house was clean and well maintained, it was equipped with almost everything we needed for our stay. We dined at the tables (inside & out), enjoying the view as we ate: we spent very little time in the house as the weather was superb and the sun didn't go until very late. The bedrooms were comfortable and clean, with the peace and tranquility of the area we slept very well. Our first evening was spent exploring Hellnar and the harbour, we loved it. The following day we walked to Arnarstapi and took the Snow-cat up the glacier - we took great photos looking back down to the house. Definitely recommend this as a day out - watching the Arctic Terns on the cliffs was wonderful and we advise guests to explore the cliffs, the sea caves are magnificent. We drove to Stykkisholmur on our second day and took the birdwatching boat tour of the Breidafjordur, we saw all kinds of birds and would recommend this as a good trip. We drove back via north road of Snaefellsnes which was full of interesting places. Our final day was spent walking, we left our car at Malarril (10 - 15 mins from house) and went to view Londranagar. We then doubled back and walked the coast path to Dritvik and back, spending some time on the amazing beach at Djupalonssandur. This was another excellent day out - we didn't expect the weather to be too hot in Iceland ! We had to leave at 7am the next day as we were booked on the car ferry to the West Fjords. We honestly wish we had booked to stay longer at this house - we didn't want to leave ! There were just a couple things to mention - we brought our own bed linen, we knew we would not have time to put linen in the washing machine as we had an early ferry to catch so could not use the linen provided. We thought the house had a barbecue but we couldn't see one - luckily we had already bought a disposable one. We would love to stay here again if we were lucky enough to come back to Iceland and we would definitely recommend it to our friends and family.
Thanks,
Shelagh and Trevor
