About Sally McCoy

A native Detroiter, life brought me up to the beauty of this area suddenly, during 1990. A few years later, I opened and ran a retail store called Capricorn Moon that was popular in nearby Petoskey for over a decade. I now make my living through writing plays and non-fiction, and I am currently working on the Great American Novel. Civic theatre, choral singing, and being outside are my passions.

Sally McCoy purchased this cottage in 1989
Why Sally McCoy chose Petoskey

I have enjoyed being this cottage's caretaker for well over two decades. It was my parents' summer home and has seen hundreds of happy relatives and friends coming Up North for vacations. I have personally lived here only sporadically, and have more often played hostess here, being the only family resident to live year round within this fabulous vacation area of Michigan. This cottage has so much to offer! The property is flanked on both sides by empty lots, while to the back there is a ridge of woods that separates it from backyard neighbors, and the huge expanse across the street to the front acts as the community septic field. No one will ever build there, so the property is located in forever seclusion. Yet it maintains a strong position of access to all sorts of lovely amenities. The house itself is gracious with a wide, sweeping front deck, open views from the top of a hill, with plenty of surrounding wildlife and trails to enjoy. Beautiful Lake Charlevoix is so close. It is not hard to see why this spot is one to be cherished by all who come to stay for awhile.

What makes this cottage unique

A quirky sense of humor embraces the furnishings and accent pieces of the Rest Nest. The long driveway up to the cottage is lined with stones and ornaments of a whimsical character that must be seen to be appreciated. The gracious plant life that surrounds the house, both domesticated garden plants and wild ferns and flowers, are breathtaking to behold. Though set in a modern subdivision, our cottage is virtually neighbor free. We are surrounded by nature instead, with the quiet peacefulness that that implies. Across the road is an old forest with graceful trees, perfect for a winter glide on cross country skis, or a robust walk with the family dog. Inside the house is a cozy atmosphere, which separates the great room in front from the more secluded adjoining bedrooms in the rear of the building. Every one of the many windows in the cottage boasts a beautiful view of the great outdoors. The birches and cedars that are dotted throughout the property are lovingly decorated with crystals and garden art. Every year we add more pieces, combining with Mother Nature to create an atmosphere of grace and loveliness for our guests. We maintain a fire pit, complete with aged firewood, for summer gatherings of folks who like to toast hot dogs and marshmallows over the dancing flames. A giant grill is available for outdoor barbeques during the warmer months. And in the winter, our lovely gas fireplace provides warmth and comfort for the weary traveler. It is not all primitive, however: we provide the finest and fastest wireless internet service and expanded cable TV, with a DVR filled with a huge array of classic television shows and movies. We like to think of the Rest Nest as a wonderful place to visit, regardless of the season of the year. We believe that vacations are appropriate during any month on the calendar, and we set the cottage up for joyful times, regardless of the date! Holiday decorations are set out for your enjoyment whenever you happen to visit!

Set within the center of three major resort towns (Petoskey, Charlevoix, and Boyne City), there are oodles of attractions and events to be found within a few miles from the door of our cottage. Whether your interest is GOLF (five acclaimed courses, each within 23 miles), NATURE (we are famous for our million dollar sunsets and pristine freshwater beaches), SHOPPING (we boast four major top grade retail districts all within 12 miles), ENTERTAINMENT (Odawa Casino Resort with gaming and live shows is 13 miles away), HISTORY (museums surround us, as do Renaissance and Victorian buildings, a variety of lighthouses, and we are located smack in the middle of Ernest Hemingway's boyhood territory), ADVENTURE (Wildwood Rush Canopy Tours with nine zip lines is just around the corner, Avalanche Bay Indoor Water Park, Boyne Mountain Ski Resort, go karts, driving ranges, Petoskey Winter Sports Park, batting cages) or LAKES AND ISLANDS, we are lucky enough to be at the center of it all.

Day trips to historical and rustic Beaver Island or to nationally famous Mackinaw Island are enjoyed by many tourists to this area. Within fifty miles lies The Headlands, one of only ten International Dark Sky Preserves in the entire USA. Ideal for star-gazing, the absence of human-made light sources gives these rare Dark Sky parks their distinction. We have one! It also happens to have 550 acres of untouched woodlands to explore, including over two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline. A bonanza for observing unusual and endangered species of plants, and for spying birds and animals living freely within their natural habitat; a photographer's dreamland!

Our cottage is a mere four miles from beautiful Young State Park, and we have several other nature preserves nearby, all featuring expansive public beaches. Water excursions are available, including Sturgeon River trips, fishing charters, cruising Lake Michigan or Lake Charlevoix in 110' tour boats, and personal small craft (kayaks, jet skis, pontoon boats, etc.) may be rented by the hour or for a full week.

This is a biker's paradise, with 13 major bike trails leading all over the North, each approachable from our own driveway. Forest lovers are welcome to explore exquisite hiking trails that start and finish at our cottage door - no need for a motor vehicle to get you there.

Nothing can beat our breathtaking autumn colors, splashed against the bright blue skies above. Our cottage gives a stunning view of the wonders of fall hues, sitting as it does amongst the treetops.

Winter guests have the most gorgeous snow scenes to view, with skiing, snow-boarding and other winter sports readily available. Three major ski resorts (Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, and Nubs Nob) are all close by.

Springtime brings morel mushroom hunting, and more beautiful and delicate white trillium in the woods than you will see anywhere else in the country. Feral deer live plentifully among us, and you will doubtlessly see them during your stay, tiptoeing though the property in their graceful way.

Summertime, of course, is the prime season to visit, where resort life is at its finest. SO many festivals and special events are available, nearly every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day. As a visitor you will be charmed by our small town ambiance, with our parades, fireworks, park concerts, carnivals, sporting competitions, and outdoor farm markets, all to be accompanied by sweet nibbles of Mackinaw Island fudge, ice cream cones and other tasty specialties of the vicinity.

Our closest attraction is the Horton Bay General Store, located (essentially) in our back yard. A mile and a half drive away (or closer by foot), the store is virtually unchanged from its original look when first built in 1876. It's presence within the National Register of Historic Places insures that it will remain so. Horton Bay in total is all but lost in time, kissed by the sleepy atmosphere of yesteryear.

So, if you need a rest from the accelerated pace of daily life, we invite you to come and idle away an hour or two on the large front porch of the same General Store where Ernest Hemingway paused between catching fish in nearby Horton Creek.

It may suit you to come back to a lazier, less complicated time for your next vacation. Let the breeze ruffle your furrowed brow and relax into a calm and restful respite for a spell. If, on the other hand, you crave activity and robust stimulation, we have that as well. Something for everybody here.

Whatever your preference, we invite you to stay at our cottage, which we call the Rest Nest. It will be a visit you will long cherish, of that we have no doubt!

Please, be our guest.

We loved our stay here! My boyfriend and I came up for a long weekend with our two dogs. Sally was a wonderful hostess and made sure the place was stocked with everything we'd need. We loved the fireplace, our dogs spent quite a bit of time thawing out in front of it after our trek through the nearby woods. The location was ideal, we visited Charlevoix, the bridge, and a bit of the UP all in two days. This place was great and we can't wait to return!

The rest nest was a great cabin for a ski trip. The fireplace was an amazing touch after a long day on the slopes. The scenery was also a great early morning past time. Definitely will be staying at this property again in the near future. Perfect location!

The rest nest has a very inviting and relaxing atmosphere. You feel at home and comfortable in the space. Our four legged friend really enjoyed the space and also felt at home. It is a great location from outdoor sports and popular dining locations.

If you want to get away from the immediate Petoskey or Charlevoix area this a a perfect pick. The proprietor is very helpful and the price is reasonable as well. The only drawback is that I would be sure to bring some extra lawn chairs or outdoor seating if you wanted to spend some time on the patio or in front of the fire. Apart from that minor detail, everything else was great.

This was our first time renting through VRBO, and what a nice experience it was. We spent five days enjoying our family in the area and then having the ability to go back to our own quiet spot and just enjoy ourselves. The home feels totally secluded though this is within an association. The area was quiet and relaxed which was greatly appreciated. The cottage was just the right size for myself, hubby and son. Sipping a cup of coffee on the deck a bit of bliss. I also enjoyed the bits of art whimsy throughout.
All in all a very pleasant experience and a very pleasant owner. I particularly appreciated being able to bring our German Shepard. This was a new experience for her and she was a bit ansy when we first got there but Sally was quite comfortable with her anyway which I appreciated a great deal. That ease let Zena feel at ease also, and it wasn't long before she was right at home.
The location is great too, basically between Petoskey and Charlevoix. A great base to both areas and more as its not a bad drive to either Traverse City or Mackinaw City.
Thank you for sharing your home with us, we enjoyed it immensely.
