About Thorsteinn and Bjargey

We have been involved in tourism for more than 20 years.

Thorsteinn and Bjargey purchased this house in 2008

Why Thorsteinn and Bjargey chose South Iceland

We built this house 2008. Since we now live in Sweden because of work, we wanted travelers to Iceland to have the opportunity to stay. Grund is located in the heart of the popular Golden Circle. Close to Reykjavik, the capital and very short to get service at Selfoss and Hveragerdi. A lot of things to see and do in the neighborhood but also an excellent place to do just nothing but relax and enjoy the nature.

What makes this house unique

The size and quality of Grund and the location makes it unique.

Beautiful Home - Pictures don't do it justice!

  • 5 of 5

Our group was amazed by how gorgeous this home was. Even the pickiest of our group kept mentioning how impressed he was with the detailing in the interior. From heated floors to high ceilings, and the beautiful glass stairwell - this house is unique in so many ways. You can tell the owner went above and beyond to provide a one-of-a-kind home.

There are plenty of rooms for a large group, and it was well stocked with everything you need from toilet paper, spices for cooking, laundry detergent, games, etc. Past guests even left some liquor (and so did we for the next guests)! The home is cozy and warm, but also open and spacious so everyone can have their own space.

The location is excellent - 20 minutes from Thingvellir (we went snorkeling here which was unbelievable) and also a close drive to Selfoss where they have incredible burgers. We took the scenic route to the airport on the last day (southern route along the beach) which was stunning.

We were lucky to have Thorsteinn as our host as he is pleasant, responsive and caring. We highly recommend this home to anyone with a family or large group to enjoy Iceland's beautiful countryside :)

Spacious and comfortable house at a top location!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house as a family with grown up kids and their partners. The house is located on travelling distance of the main points of interest in the socalled golden circle. We loved the hottub outside the hosue is spacious, but cosy. Only one disadvantage for our big group: the hosue had only one shower (inside).

We definitely recommend this house to friends or relatives.

Northern Lights - A lifetime dream!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Grund over Christmas. The house is everything we expected and more - just like a home away from home. Even though the weather was extreme to say the least, the house was lovely and warm and cozy. The hot tub was so hot that we had to shovel ice into it to cool it down even though the outside temperature was minus 10! We saw the Northern Lights a couple of times with one night being absolutely stunning. They looked like you could reach out and touch them, it was so vivid. Definitely worth staying out in the countryside to get such a fantastic display. We went out every day to the surrounding countryside and even got locked in for the afternoon at one place because all the roads were closed due to the snow storms. The house is ideally close to all the major attractions of the Golden Circle and our 2 children were never bored for one second. We didn't even turn the TV on once because we were either out exploring or in the hot tub looking out for the Northern Lights. The local hotel serves excellent food and everyone we met in Iceland was more than helpful and friendly. I would certainly have no hesitation recommending this house to anyone who appreciates beautiful surroundings and complete peace and quiet. Iceland is an amazing country and I'd love to go back one day to see more of what it has to offer. A week is just not long enough.

Thank you Thorsteinn for letting us stay in your beautiful home.

A Happy New Year Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six - three couples - stayed at Grund for a week over New Years and had a wonderful and relaxing stay.

Our arrival was a bit of an adventure as a snowstorm had preceded our arrival and it was a bit of a guessing game as to where the actual road was! I agree that this is not a place to arrive at during the dark of winter. Daylight is a necessity.

Our home away from home was very comfortable and we wanted for nothing. We loved the big windows, the large kitchen area and the cozy seating area by the wood burning fireplace.

We found the hot pot to be very hot. It is heated through the geothermal system and we had no way to turn it down except to shovel snow into it. Luckily we had lots of snow and we enjoyed it thoroughly.

We too had trouble with the dryer until we realized that the water from the clothing drains into a reservoir which needs to be emptied regularly. Once we did this, it worked great.

We found the location to be close to towns for groceries and also easy to get to the golden circle attractions.

As we were there in winter with lots of snow, our four wheel drive Toyota Landcruiser was a Godsend. There were many people on the icy roads without four wheel drive and most of them looked terrified, for good reason. Getting stuck in the middle of no where - in the dark - would not be fun.

We would go back to Grund and to Iceland in a heartbeat. The people are wonderful, the scenery captivating and there are so many wonderful places to hike.

Iceland Adventurers

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at this house and had a wonderful time. Our group also felt we should be forthright so that other renters would benefit from our experiences.

For starters, the owner gave us a link for directions, but they omitted which street to turn on. We found the house after driving around, but if we had arrived at night, we would have been out of luck. Here are the directions: From Reykjavik, take Highway 1 to Highway 35. Turn left on Highway 35. Turn left on Highway 36. Turn right on Highway 351 toward Burfell (dirt road) just past Hotel Grimsborgir. From Highway 351, turn right on “Asabraut” (little green sign). The house is up a small hill on the left.

The hot tub was a surprise. The cover was ripped and was being held down with rocks, leaving debris and leaves that we had to clean out. We also filled the hot tub ourselves with a hose from the laundry room. It helps to leave the hose in the hot tub with a small trickle of cold water to regulate the heat. Once we figured out the hot tub idiosyncracies, we enjoyed it almost every evening..but sadly never saw any Northern Lights.

The washer and dryer is great, if a little hard to understand. Kalt is cold. Stick with that if you're worried about shrinkage. We re-washed all of the towels as they were scratchy from being air-dried. There are two dryers, and the one next to the washer is just fine.

We had hoped to use the guest bedroom outside, but this was impossible. There was a double bed (not a queen) and literally no room for even a suitcase on the floor. The bathroom had a swing door and a tiny sink. Do not count on it for sleeping arrangements unless it’s for a teen wanting space, and they would probably love it.

The size of the beds is misleading. There are no queen beds, only doubles with two twin-sized duvets. If you want to snuggle, you overlap duvets, which is a challenge. Also, the king bed is two twins with a thin pillow top-like mattress on top. Because there is a small 1-2 inch gap between bed heights, it will feel like the Great Divide at night. Plus...those individual duvets make it hard to cuddle.

This review may sound negative, but -- honestly -- we would come back to this house again. The kitchen is stupendous and the house is modern and clean. The bathroom and double shower downstairs are five-star, hands down. The location is also perfect for sightseeing, with many attractions -- Thingvellir, Geysir, Gulfoss, and Kerio -- nearby. Enjoy!

Great House, Great Location, Perfect for Family

  • 5 of 5

Very Nice Place. Well furnished and very spacious. Had 4 adults and 3 children stay. We had plenty of room and time with the 2 washrooms. The hot tube and deck are beautiful. Very good service. Great location 20 minuted from Thingvellir and on the Golden Circle. I would recommend to anyone planing to spend time in South Iceland as there many day trips and sights to see with-in an hours drive.

The house is located only 50 minutes drive from Reykjavik in a quiet area close to lake Thingvallavatn, a part of the golden circle (one of the must see places in Iceland). Its closest village Selfoss is appox 15 min driving with all services needed. Excellent hiking all around and only 20 min drive from lake Laugarvatn. Geysir and Gullfoss two of most visited sights are not far. Two good 18 hole golf courses 7 km (Öndverdarnes) and 13 km (Kidjaberg) away.
