Ewing House is on a hillside, 60 feet above sea level, bordered by the ocean on two sides and overlooks the ‘mile-long” Long Bay Beach. From all bedroom and common rooms you can see a number of other islands, the most well known being Jost Van Dyke and St. Thomas while enjoying views of endless sailboats, various birds and fish in the waters below. You are a 1-3 minute walk to the water as the beach begins at the foot of our driveway- about 50 yards from our house. We are one of only a few houses on the island that are really located right on a usable beach. This is a very beautiful beach, which you may recognize as our view often appears on calendars and other publications on the Caribbean. We do feel that we have the most beautiful view on the island. Others must feel the same way as we have had one couple take the house for a month each year for 25 years and a number of other couples who have come in the area of five years or more. We rent the house as either a 2 or 3 bedroom house. We do not rent the third bedroom separately if you only need the two bedrooms. The rates at the top or our listing are only for the two bedrooms. Please see the rates section for the three bedroom prices. We are unable to show them at the top of this listing.

Located on Tortola’s West End, Ewing House has walking access to excellent beaches for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and surfing. West End has many excellent restaurants, a number of running/walking loops along the ocean, tennis and sailing as well as scuba diving day trips leaving from nearby Soper’s Hole. Of course, one can also just read in the shade of the porch or sun bathe and watch the waves roll by. The house has 3 bedrooms, each with the same view and size. We had rented numerous houses and generally someone was disappointed when their room was smaller. Each bedroom has its own bath and dressing area. While we prefer ceiling fans and open windows, the bedrooms now also have air conditioning so you have the choice.

The house comes with daily maid service and the maid always gets great reviews. Dion Stoutt manages our house. He has been one of our neighbors and friend for many years. He is very easy to deal with and has an amazing knowledge of the island. Both he and the maid can help you with any problems or questions that you might have. There are so many things to do on the island and ferry trips to numerous other islands are possible. We always visit at least one other island every time that we are there.

About Owner/Manager

We originally built the home as a family with my husband, myself, my sister and my mother. The house was managed by my mom who was a pediatrican in Ohio and although she died in 1994, the house is still sometimes referred to as Dr. Ewing's house. My husband and I live in Greenwich Connecticut and my sister lives in New Rochelle, New York. I have two children, ages 32 and 34, and my son, Chris Relyea, has helped with the rentals of the house for several years. He designed our web site at www.ewinghouse.com and he is in the process of updating this. The pictures shown on this site are currently more up to date than on our web site but the web site has lots of nice information on the island. My children have each come to the island since they were a few months old. It was a great place for children as they could play in the house during the day and as the living room is open to the sea side, you had the feeling of being at the beach without the sun. We would take them to the beach in the early morning and afternoon and then maybe have lunch in some protected restaurant in between.

Why Owner/Manager chose Tortola

We first visited the island as a family in 1973 and left the island 9 days later having purchased our site. The island really opened to tourists in 1966 when a small bridge was built connecting the small island called Beef Island to Tortola and an airport was built on Beef Island. We were one of the very first non-native families to build on the island and feel that we bought a particulary beautiful sight. We walk down our driveway to the beach. We are off a good paved road. This was important to us as so many homes are not on paved roads and we don't mind bouncing around sometimes, we don't want to do it constantly. Also we are in walking distance to a number of good restaurants and hotels with their amenities. As we are on a point, we have a lot of privacy.We like being just above the beach as we don't have a sand fly problem if there is one and we get more breeze.

What makes this villa unique

We do have the view that we have seen on many calendars. It was on the Costco brochure last year for cruise travel. My mother was once in the dentist chair and saw it on his calendar hanging before her. While we don't have a pool ourselves and have not wanted one, we are steps from the Long Bay Hotel where one can use their fabulous pool with its swim-up bar and inexpensive lunch service plus their lighted tennis courts and gym for a small fee. We don't do this very often as we just swim in the ocean below us. As I said, this is all an easy walk. We are very close to a number of good restaurants.

At the time of entering this listing, guests may take out a reasonably priced daily or longer membership at the 'steps away' Long Bay hotel which has a beautiful pool, tennis courts, and gym. We walk to several restaurants and quite a few more are withing 1-2 miles. Horseback riding has been available in the past but we do not know if this is still the case. The island has a botanical garden and a national park for walking on the top of one of the mountain peaks. There are a number of nearby grocery stores but a rental car or taxi is needed. There are many nearby beaches and each is unique. The house has two bedroom upstairs and another on the floor below. The downstairs bedroom has a small additional kitchen. The beds can be made up as twin beds or king sized. Beach chairs are usually available but they deteriorate quickly, can not be bought on the island so they will not seem special. We are within 10-15 minutes of ferries to other islands.

  • Each bedroom is the same size with the same beautiful view. We used to rent homes where there would be a master bedroom and them smaller bedrooms. This way no one is disappointed. Each bedroom has a dressing area and a bathroom. The third bedroom has a small kitchen area. With each bedroom, you have the choice of airconditioning or ceiling fans and open screened windows.

    Our children, now 32 and 34 have been coming since then were a few months old. The house is nice for children as the living room is open on the beach side which gives a lovely airy feeling without the sun exposure. We used to take them to the beach early and late in the day and then maybe go somewhere where it was covered for lunch.

Fun was had by all !!!

We had an awesome vacation at the Ewing House. The house has a great layout, was clean and well maintained with all amentities. We even had daily maid service! The owner was very helpful answering my questions from ferries to grocery stores.
It rained briefly the first morning & we awoke to a beautiful rainbow as we lifted our heads from our pillows. The Ewing House is in a superb location and the views of the beach, water, and sky, not to mention the breathtaking sunsets every night, were stunning every minute of every day.
We did not rent a car. We walked to Sebastian’s, The Bumba Shack & Apple Bay to surf. We also walked on an enchanted path (located off of Long Bay Beach) through the woods to Smugglers Cove to snorkel. Sebastian’s & Long Bay Resort both offer a convenience store & restaurants for days we wanted to stay close to home & hang on the beach, which is a quick walk down the driveway.
We took a taxi to the ferries to visit Jost Van Dyke (Soggy Dollar Bar), Virgin Gorda (The Baths), to Josiah Bay to surf & to dine at The Sugar Mill & Bananakeet, which we highly recommend. Our taxi driver Louis was always on time, informative & even made stops along the way w/o charging us extra.
I would definitely recommend the Ewing House and Tortola to everyone!

10 days at Ewing House

Four of us (two couples) rented Ewing House for 10 days in February 2013. (We occupied the upper level with two bedrooms.)
The view from the deck of this house is stunning. It is a view that is featured in many BVI tourist magazines and materials. There is the constant sound of the surf and the sight of pelicans diving for fish. Some of the pelicans roost in a tree that is just off the deck. Because the house is well above the level of Long Bay, pelicans frequently fly by at eye level, or even below eye level. The house is a destination in itself, a place to be enjoyed with a cool drink and a good book.
The two bedrooms on the upper level are ideal for two couples. Each bedroom has a private bath. (There is also a half bath just off the living area.) We were to be the first renters to try out the new air conditioning in the bedrooms. But we decided that we preferred to sleep with the sliders open (screens closed) so that we could hear the sound of the surf. Perhaps the air conditioning would be desirable in warmer months. The beds were quite comfortable and the bathrooms were more than adequate (plenty of hot water). The kitchen is small but efficient, with plenty of cooking equipment. All the basics are there, and several small stores are nearby.
It was a delight to be able to walk down the driveway to Long Bay beach. The water is warm and the sand is soft. The Long Bay Beach Resort is a short walk from the house. We had a couple of meals at the Resort’s dining area that is set on the beach. We also had excellent meals at Sebastian’s and Sugar Mill Inn – both within a mile of the house. We also had a number of meals at the house – because we wanted to be able to enjoy the view, including the sun setting over St. Thomas, as we ate.
It is a fairly short drive from the house to the outstanding small beach at Smuggler’s Cove. The road to Smuggler’s Cove is a dirt road that has a few fairly deep holes in it. We were happy to have rented an SUV with high ground clearance. We rented our car from Jerry’s Car Rental in West End. The car was in very good shape and Jerry was courteous and helpful.
One word of warning to anyone visiting BVI. Don’t take the posted ferry schedules too seriously – especially when you are leaving to catch a plane on St. Thomas. Call a day ahead to check ferry departure times from West End and Road Town. Our outcome was fine but not without some nail-biting.?

Great spot for a family vacation

Ewing House is perfectly situated on Long Bay with magnificent vistas of the bay and lovely breezes. The house is well equipped and maintained (including a very comfortable 'in-law' apartment on the lower level with its own kitchenette and patios), maid service every day plus a very obliging property manager to answer all questions. Furnishings are comfortable, plenty of hot water and fresh linens, TV and washer/dryer.

Access to the beach is a short walk down the driveway, its proximity perfect for young and not so young (three generations in our group). The beach itself is perfect for boogie boarding, great fun. Since you can walk quite far out in the gentle surf, it worked for our 7-year-old as well. Nearby is Long Bay Resort where you can play tennis or swim in their lovely pool as an alternative, for a daily fee.

There are many other things to do on the island (a car is essential). All in all we felt it was a great spot for a family vacation.

Comfort, convenience and spectacular view

We enjoyed staying at Ewing House. It is a home away from home with beautiful views of the islands across the water, the waves rolling in towards the beach, and the Long Bay Resort and Spa. The house is modern, comfortable, and extremely functional. The three suites are very comfortable for at least six people, and the kitchen and bathrooms appear to have been recently upgraded. We always enjoy walking to everywhere from the Ewing House, like having breakfast at Sugar Mill, having drinks at Sebastian's at sunset and enjoying the pool, tennis and spa facilities at Long Bay. And the famous Bomba Shack is right down the road from Sebastian's.
We recommend this carefree house for a family and friends vacationing together. The owners of Ewing House are extremely pleasant and friendly. Daniel Chen
