About Espen Schiefloe

A back ground in resort real estate development, Espen has a love for the tropical having been spoiled by the worlds greatest hotels, resorts and homes...incorporated all that he has learned about what creates the best tropical experience...

Espen Schiefloe purchased this house in 2010

Why Espen Schiefloe chose Keewaydin Island

Florida has an abundance of beautiful beaches, waterways, cities and attractions...yet the critical eye and more experienced you get with south Florida, the south west gulf coast city of Naples is as nice as it gets. Then you take it one step further and the 7 mile long barrier island south of Naples is practically undeveloped. so instead of your gulf front home costing 12+ million (starter Naples gulf front home) you have an even nicer gulf front home location with unbeatable natural features of your boat and bay on the back side and essentially a private beach..

What makes this house unique

Its really about the experience...Here, you get to get back to nature, see some wild life, have space to feel your soul breathe and feel that you are one with a tropical wont get that in town...

Guestbook comments from the owner

We would definitely recommend staying at keeisland! for those of you whom are interested in experiencing a very pristine and wild part of Florida. Our time out there was very restorative and we left feeling very connected to the natural world.

We came with our parents and two children. The stay has been the nicest of any our rental house ventures on VRBO or Homeaway. The beach is practically all yours to yourself and its very private as the boat only access keeps all the crowds a few miles away in Naples.

Michael and Espen, the owners representative, made us feel right at home and brought our luggage and groceries onto the boat and up to the house on our arrival. They showed us how everything worked, refered us to a fishing guide, and had several fishing poles set up for us along with fishing tackle boxes. The kids loved the paddleboards, and were seen for hours on both the bay and gulf.

We suggest buying lots of groceries before you head out as you wont want to come into town and take all that time to go buy groceries. It is so peaceful and enjoyable on the island that you really wont want to ever leave.

We cant say enough about the experience, we think everyone would enjoy it. For those of you whom like to learn about off grid homes, it was very interesting to us as the house is entirely off grid yet its just like a luxury home on the grid. We only heard the generator come on once one morning for a few hours.

We suggest winn Dixie by boat in Marco Island for a place to get groceries by boat. We also stayed on night the day before checking in at the Cove hotel on Naples Bay and that was convenient we thought.

Thanks Espen and Mike for such a great stay!

One of a kind paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We spent Christmas 2014 in one of the most peaceful places we have ever been. Mike and the staff were very accommodating when we arrived. They explained everything and gave us a tour of the property. It was very clean and beautifully decorated. We did not bring anything but our clothes and food. Everything else was supplied in the house. The wildlife was amazing along with the relaxing sound of the ocean at night. We walked the beach every morning and didn't run into a soul. The seashells are endless and the starfish are everywhere. We loved the evening visits from the armadillos! Grilling in the evening and having dinner in the screened in lanai was top notch! No need to bring spices, insect repellent or sunscreen. Everything you need is supplied. The Internet worked great as well as the cell amplifier. We had better service on the island than in town. A short boat ride brought us to a variety of places to eat. We definitely recommend this house to anyone who wants to have the time of their lives on a tropical island! Thank you to Espen for offering this beautiful home! It truly was one of the most memorable family vacations we have ever had!

A wonderul experience

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been planning a trip like this for over a year. It was only the 2 of us. We have never done anything like this before in terms of renting a house as remote as this and depending on a boat to get around. We had no idea what to expect when arrived but it was a very pleasant surprise. Espen and his team have created a very remote get away. The house was well equipped with everything except major groceries when we arrived. They did have a lot of the basics for cooking and some food that others have left behind. We had a great almost private beach (we saw maybe 8 people total on the island the week we were there). They have a great supply of swim toys as well as sun screen. The house itself is very comfortable and cozy yet elegant. The weather was great. The 1st 2 days were sunny and the next 2 was stormy but we just laid out on the lanai and read. Though the house is solar powered we never ran into any issues despite having 2 days with little to no sun. The only thing I would say was a problem was that when you take the boat to Naples there is no public boat parking (at least not that we could find) and in Marco Island it took us a few times but figured out you can call the harbor master on channel 16 and park there. Winn Dixie also has a Marina but request that it is only used for their patrons. The other was the gnats after the storm. Neither of these problems reflect on the experience we had. We plan to return.

Owner's Response: certainly is worlds away from Oregon. Our guests come from as far away as Germany and as nearbye as Naples and Miami. Life and Travel these days is about the experience, verus just checkin off the list of bucket list pleces to see in person. Keeisland offers a unique authentic natural Florida experience. By natural we mean nature, and contrasted with so much of Florida where rampant development paved over nature and gave us concrete hi rise towers, a respite from towers, elevators, and a sea of humanity, provide a sense of what the real Florida is or was in its natural state. All the while located only a few miles from the likely the most picturesgue beautiful small towns in south Florida, Naples and Marco Island. We agree that we should provide a greater navigation map to help guests find their way around to the top restaurants, and places to go by boat. Part of us thinks that may be just part of the experience though, setting out on a adventure of discovery of sights and sounds, accompanied by dolphins and other wild life. On the other hand, its only been recently that we are selves got intot he habit of going to winn dixie grocery store on Marco Island, where the nearbye Starbucks offers a new york times, a double espresso and a scenic boat ride in the mornings. We think this really makes for a great combo of grabbing a few items for luch and dinner later in the day back on the island, and also providing a chance to get anything else you may have decided you wanted but forgot, see some people and have a scenic boat ride. Then making it back to the island perhaps offering another scenic adventure. We used to go back to Naples but now really suggest the Marco Island winn dixie grocery and starbucks run for something fun and convenient and its all done by boat, with a long boat dock at the grocery store (winn dixie) We look forward to welcoming you back next year. Each year we get a number of guests that come back, more and more each year. As with special places like this, eventually the calender will fill with only repeat guests. New guests have to book further and further ahead into the future in order to secure a weeks stay. We welcome the popularity, we work hard to see that our guests have exceptional experiences. Again thanks for coming, we look forward to seeing you again next year!

An Annual Affair

  • 5 of 5

This was our third summer holiday at the house and once again- it didn't fail! We were two families with four boys between the ages of 3 and 8 and it proved to be a perfect holiday setting that kept everything busy happy and well fed!

Espen and his team are always amazing at responding to any questions or concerns and the house is so well maintained it really makes the stay even more worth it. Beds are ridiculously comfortable, the house is super clean (I am a total OCD clean freak and won't step foot into a hotel that's less than 4 stars to be shamefully honest) and well equipped and the fact that the house stays cool despite being off the grid is a relief after a full day of sunning and swimming in the bath-warm ocean water.

The dads were happy fishing from the beach and bay, us moms were thrilled to let the kids run about carefree and the boys were in total heaven chasing gopher tortoises, digging for sand fleas, paddle boarding and of course, watching cartoons on the big screen tv at night.

We all enjoyed amazing gourmet cooked meals in the huge screened porch in the company of fiery sunsets, grazing deer and wild boars. We also spent a few days fishing out in the Gulf for bonnet head sharks, mackerel, snook, lady fish and jacks while enjoying the very regular dolphin sightings along the way.

It truly is always a pleasure to come to Keewaydin and we definitely plan to come back again and again as long as Espen let's us!! Haha.

Although we enjoy our life on the Atlantic coasts of Florida, thank you Espen again for creating such a unique one of a kind Gulf coast Florida experience for us. See you again soon!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind words Annhy and Mike! Its rewarding for us to see our hard work pay off for the enjoyment of others. We are most greatful when our guests too express their own gratitude as it really does validate our own efforts and we appreciate that! Some level of adventure is always involved with island life. As we have so many moving pieces with boats, off grid utilities, solar power, generators, wild life and nature, but it is always worth it once the experience of the natural envrironment fill your senses. I'm always looking for ways to express the experience for those contemplating a stay on the island, and the words that I feel I am always reaching for are perhaps, seclusion, nature, peaceful, off grid, away from high rises and city, yet just a short boat ride away from any service or goods that one could need. You must have a desire to be in the wild, and a slight sense of adventure and self sufficiency. If your in that camp at all, it will tend to exceed your expectations, but if your more of a Ritz Carleton, room service type, you may elect that option, as Naples has two of those. So if your ready for paradise in South Florida, come stay! And thanks again Mike and Annhy for your loyal yearly visits! See you next year! Espen

The home, furnishings, boat and the beach were more then expected, as a matter of fact it was over the top.

Just as many of the previous reviews had stated the beach, wildlife and marine life were fabulous. The front porch and beach were our favorites. Epsen's staff were so friendly and willing to help at all times. They want your experience to be just that a great experience.

Off the grid living at it's best!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this vacation house so much we are planning to return next year with same group. Off the grid is the way to go to get away from the stress and routines of daily lives. From our pick-up at dock with Mike and tour of the property we were in love with Keewaydin. Very isolated and few people on the beach. Perfect! Mike and his wife even came back one night to cook dinner for us! At first we were not sure how we would like cooking all our meals and no eating out, but by end of the week we ate great and really felt cooking as a group made for more fun and bonding. Lots of adventure walking the beaches and island for wildlife and shells, day and night!

Owner's Response: Hi Stu and Joan, Thank you for your kind words and for coming back next year! We appreciate reviews to help potential guests to realize what a unique home and area this is. Once you have experienced this tropical oasis compared to the concrete paved over jungle of a typical Florida beach front location, it stays with you. The magic of nature and peacefulness combined with tropical foilage and marine life in a setting and house and grounds which we work hard to make it as luxurious as we can, that's what makes keeisland unique. So again thanks for helping us to get the word out and speak to the uniqueness of keeisland.

The south west gulf coast of Florida is world renowned for its white powder sugar sand beaches, safe and warm and calm water for swimming make the water accessable to everyone. Keewaydin Island itself is considered to be one of Americas top 10 most beautiful beaches and considering you have several acres of it to your self, most of the pleasure will be in activities surrounding your beach front home. From shelling, to walking, swimming, stand up paddle boarding, boating, fishing, having your bare feet on the sand, taking in the salt sea air and the abundant nature that surrounds you. Your stay here is about nature and access to the island is by BOAT only. 40 Years ago, the environmental movement finally said enough already and stopped a planned bridge and road to the island. So this is where development in Florida stops. It's as if the entire state of Florida is paved over and then you come to the end of the road at beautiful Naples and across Gordon pass lies a natural paradise, kee Island.

If you have fisherman or woman in your group, its tough to beat the fishing right off the beach (there is a great sand bar just off shore) and then the dock side has the best snook fishing anywhere.

There are more places to explore then you can imagine. An easy trip is to good land, with a couple of bars and live music. Marco Island and Naples in either direction offer plenty of places to explore.

If you want some fine dining and shopping, water parks and so forth, venturing out to Naples and Marco Island opens up other possibilities. First and foremost, great shopping and dining. Naples is a haven for wealthy retirees, and therefore you can expect the top world class dining, shopping and golfing. Two recomended in town adventures are the Botanical gardens and the Zoo. Either one is a 15 minitue drives from our marina in town.

Within Naples, we have a whole foods, trader joes and a couple organic markets. Our favorite organic market, food and thought,( happens to be where we go frequently to dine for lunch, grab some organic food and head out to the island. That concludes our in town Naples suggestions.

Very often, we charachterize this island beach house experience as a place to for a wonderful peaceful escape...a place to hang out with family and friends....a time to relax..

A typical stay for our guests starts with a grocery store shop for several days. The house has all the staples already, such as spices, drinking water, towels etc. you only need to plan your meals and bring the fresh whole foods with you.

Arriving at our check in time at 3 pm. our representative loads your groceries and lugguge on to the boat. You can park and leave your car there free of charge for the week.

Once aboard, the 45 minute scenic boat ride follows navigation makers south through Naples bay, down the intercoastal water way for approximately 5-6 miles. Then you arrive on our bayside dock. We show you how to tie up the boat, bring your luggage and groceries to the house and orientate you with the home and answer any questions you have. This is the fun part because at this point your in awe at how beautful it is and how happy you are to have your own island and private beach.

We call this adventure our tropical dream...As it combines the absolute very best that Florida has to offer. From the most beautiful waters and beaches and nature and wild leave concrete and mayhem behind and enter paradise...Its what the salt air and warm sun and the entire environment surrounding you bathes your soul...

The house manager will provide Chef services and Grocery provision shopping for a daily fee of $300.00 plus cost of goods. Grocery shopping the night prior to arrival, so that the groceries are stocked in the fridge prior to your arrival, is $100 fee to the house manager. Whom can usually do this the night prior to your arrival and deliver the morning of the check in.
