We enjoy gardening, antiquing, travelling, music and the outdoors. We have travelled through the British Isles, Europe, the American West, Canada and Mexico but now are content to share our place with other travelers.
Carole C. Grove purchased this cottage in 1997
It would be hard to find a better location for a vacation rental. For historians, we are in the heart of colonial America and a comfortable drive to the Nation's Capital in Washington, DC. Another direction will take you to the beautiful Atlantic Beaches for a quick overnite stay or a long day's outing. Naturalists will enjoy pristine mountain streams known for exceptional trout fishing, or expansive National forests with mountain lakes. This property is well suited for people who wish to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings of the Valley and mountains, as well as those who wish to visit the myriad of attractions nearby or within short driving distance. It is a perfect place for photographers, artists, musicans, birdwatchers, writers or those simply seeking rest and relaxation. The four distinctive seasons lend themselves uniquely to a vacation anytime of the year.
This is a family friendly home with safe outside play areas for children. Our farm menagerie includes donkeys, sheep, cattle, and beautiful laying hens who lay colorful eggs - including green and blue! Our family pets include friendly dogs and cats and two retired ponies. Our guests can enjoy the bounty of our family garden while they are here as well as fresh eggs if they like.
Two of the most strking benefits of staying here are the magnificent morning vistas of the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains. Often the morning mist outlines the layers of mountain tops that cause you to pause, and often get your camera!
Equally as beautiful, are the spectacular starry skies that are displayed on clear, cool nights. With no light polution from urban areas, the starry skies are a sight to behold!
We had a wonderful stay in May at Seven Oaks Cottage. The facilities were just as described, very clean and comfortable, and so homely with lots of personal touches and plenty of leaflets and advice about the surrounding area. We visited Staunton, the Frontier Culture Museum the Skyline Drive and Charlottesville - all an easy drive from the cottage. We also enjoyed the fresh eggs the owners gave us from their chickens! The owners were very helpful and friendly, whilst also respecting our privacy. We enjoyed seeing all the animals, walking in the forest on the farm and sampling some of the fresh strawberries growing just outside the cottage. The fire pit was great - toasting marshmallows in the flames, spotting fireflies and stargazing over the rolling hills around us - a truly magical stay, thank you so much.
My friends and family had such a wonderful time. The owners were so accommodating and really made our stay feel more like a time with good friends. There was accessibility to so many roads and the downtown Staunton area was alive with plenty of places to enjoy. Certainly look forward to visiting and staying at this property again. The bonus for our group was the pool and our 20 mos. old twins had their first swim. Can't forget the calming sounds of the farm and wildlife.
The pictures don't do justice, the cottage was bigger and more comfortable than expected. Clean with plenty of dishes and cookware and towels etc. comfortable seating inside and out. And with 4 bedrooms no one had to share.
This area of Virginia is just breathtaking: rolling hills turning into mountains, sweeping fields and lush forests. This is a great spot to explore from. The Southern entrance of the Skyline drive and Shenandoah National Park is very close. Besides hiking, there are vineyards and caves. But if you're like us, you may decide to not leave the property that much at all.
We spent a lot of time in the large pool, used the BBQ and fire pit, played board games and watched the night sky. The kids had so much fun gathering eggs, petting the cats and walking the dogs. The cast if characters also includes a flock of sheep, several donkeys and a pony. We we welcome to take anything we wanted from the vegetable garden, and we sure did!
Jim and Carole made us feel like family. We spent some nice food and wine together and enjoyed hearing about the farm and the area. Jim took the boys for a mule ride and let them drive. This suburb bunch had a blast. It sure was hard to leave.
This was the perfect home away from home for our weekend. The property is clean, cozy..........lots of room for visiting, very well equipped kitchen and two eating areas. Beds were comfortable with nice linens. Bathrooms complete with soft towels. Jim and Carole, the owners were so very nice and accommodating. In fact, when we went to the Augusta County Garden Tour, we left the crock pot on and couldn't remember when it was left on High or Low. I called Jim and he was ever so happy to go and check it for us. He even called me back to tell me that I had actually left it on low! The property was beautiful with spring flowers blooming in well maintained beds. In the pasture there were sheep, and chickens in the coup. Carole shared with us the fresh eggs she had gathered that day. Outside there was patio furniture, a fire pit, nice deck. Staunton, VA is about 16 miles from the Cottage. We went to a play at the ASC Blackfriars Theater and it was very good with excellent actors. We would definitely recommend this property for families with children or couples who want to experience the mountains.
My partner and I along with our 10 month old son loved the cottage is very comfortable and the host's farm is great -- chickens, sheep, friendly cats and dogs, and ponies. The property is beautiful and peaceful. The hosts are amazing and made us feel part of their family. They invited us to their grandson's birthday party which included a hay ride around the property. The hosts are welcoming and attentive without being instrusive. We would recommend the cottage to anyhow who is looking for a peaceful and beautiful property close to historic Staunton. While we took our vacation in October, this property would be a great place any time of year!
Our family of 4 (mom, dad, and daughters 12 and nearly 16) spent a week here in July, 2012. The rural setting and serenity provided the perfect environment for us to enjoy each other's company. My daughters paid it the ultimate compliment when they independently on 2 different days while we were getting a fire going to make Smores over the fire pit told me that it was their favorite of all the places we’d ever stayed on a vacation which ranked it higher than New York City, Yellowstone, the Tetons, the Grand Canyon and numerous national parks in Utah among others. The nearby (i.e., 15 – 20 minutes) Staunton is full of historic charm. Monticello and other points of interest are within a drive of an hour or so. The Shenandoah Valley’s scenic beauty made even the drives a delight. The converted from a horse barn cottage is quaint and adequately comfortable. It is certainly a place we’d stay again and recommend to other families.
The Shenandoah National Park is a short drive away as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. In addition there are a number of vineyards nearby as well as stables for horseback riding. Wonderful restuarants, museums, farmers' markets, antique shops, and the American Shakespeare Company at the Black Friar Theatre are all within a short 20 minute drive. For day trips, Natural Bridge, Luray Caverns, Historic Charlottesville and Lexington are all less than an hour's drive. A fun place for the whole family is the Green Valley Book Fair, open 6 times a year for two weeks. A day on the farm offers trails through the woods for hiking, a large private inground pool for day or evening swimming, a firepit for chilly evenings and making 'smores,' and a variety of farm animals including sheep, ponies, donkeys, cattle, and ten beautiful laying hens, some that lay colored eggs! Brilliant starry skies will amaze you at the end of the day!
