Overview

Cucuron House Rental Photos and Description

Terraced house with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 4, air con/heating

Hiding at the end of a quiet pedestrian cul-de-sac within the walls of the oldest 13th century part of the village, this charming old stone terraced-house appears from the outside to be part of an earlier era. Now tastefully restored and well appointed, the house does not have a garden but the roof terrace offers stunning views across the rooftops to the Luberon and across the valley the mountain St Victoire. This historic village dates back to 1004 and boasts restaurants, bakeries, shops and a cash machine all within easy walking distance. You can soak up the ambiance at the cafe in the shade of the plane trees by the renowned rectangular pond. Located on the gentle southern slopes of the Luberon, Cucuron enjoys clear light and blue skies with sunshine some 300 days per year. Life runs at a slower pace here and you will too, yet there is always something going on. The perfect place to relax, explore, walk and eat well!

Suitability:
  • non smoking only
  • unsuitable for elderly or infirm
  • wheelchair inaccessible

About Jonathan & Eve Wort

We live near Basingstoke in England and, sadly, can only get to Cucuron for a few weeks' holiday each year. We have travelled to France on holiday over many years and love staying in our house in Cucuron. We offer the house for rental so that others can enjoy this experience!

Jonathan & Eve Wort purchased this house in 2004

Why Jonathan & Eve Wort chose Cucuron

I first travelled to the Luberon area with a friend's family during school summer holidays in the late 1960's. When we had the opportunity, it was logical for us to buy a second home in the Luberon. For us, our village house in Cucuron really makes you feel part of the local community.

What makes this house unique

For fans of Doctor Who, this is the tardis! From a small front door on a narrow village street, there is spacious accommodation within and a magnificent view across the village rooftops from the upstairs terrace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for all the useful info and for making it so easy for us to commit to this house. All was perfect - weather, house, location. We made many road trips - even down to Cassis, but loved coming 'home' to Cucuron!

A perfect place in Provence

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place to stay!! The house is perfect, everything you would want. And it could not be better situated to explore all corners of Provence. If you want to not go far and still enjoy great scenery and villages and wine and food, this is your place. If you want to take day trips to explore all over Provence, this is your place. But make time to spend just in Cucuron and enjoy the local restaurants as well.

A wonderfully relaxing place in a good location

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully presented, very clean, with all you need for a week in the South of France. A lovely property with a fantastic sunny roof terrace within easy walking distance of several restaurants. Great for a couple or a family of four.

Within easy driving of Avignon, Aix en Provence, Marseille and lots of smaller villages worth a visit.

Delightful home in unspoilt village.

  • 5 of 5

The house is more spacious than we expected. It is beautifully refurbished, very comfortable and well equipped.

Cucuron village is unspoilt and beautiful. It has all the amenities you need: bakers, butchers, a small but very good supermarket, as well as wine shops and some lovely restaurants.

We thought we would eat out a lot but just loved going back and eating on the terrace. The terrace is the real star of this property. It is large, has both sun and shade and a spectacular view.

Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your comments. We love the terrace too, where the views across the rooftops change according to the light conditions. Thanks also for the tips about your Flybe experience!

Well equipped and spacious.

  • 4 of 5

Town centre property full of character and within a short walk of all amenities including shops, a small supermarket, bars and restaurants. The owner provides detailed notes on the property itself as well as guides to the local facilities and very attentive on the run-up to the visit and afterwards. Although there is no outside space (i.e. garden area) the roof terrace is large, sunny and with great views of the town and countryside.

Parking is a (free) fairly short walk away and there is nearer time-limited parking to load/unload luggage.

Lots to do locally and within an hour or two drive.

If nit-picking, the only area for improvement would be bedding which could do with an update. Otherwise full marks. No hesitation in recommending to friends.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review. The location of the property in the heart of the oldest village, yet with views beyond, gives it a special charm. Your suggestion for improvement is a helpful reminder for us!

A beautiful, welcoming home from home

  • 5 of 5

We chose this property because it looked charming in the description provided and we felt that the owners made us feel welcome right from the first email. However the photos had failed to do justice to the house. The setting in a tiny ancient street within the walled town takes you to, what looks like the door to a tiny cottage but Tardis like, it is much bigger on the inside. The property is beautifully presented, well equipped and so inviting that we spent far more time "at home" than we have on any previous holiday. Sitting on the terrace overlooking the village, the fields and the surrounding Luberon hills, watching the swallows/swifts soaring and swooping is perfect at any time of day. Wandering through the surrounding vineyards, olive groves, cherry orchards and fields of golden grain is delightful easy walking. On more energetic days, we would recommend the Fort de Buoux, the steep and fascinating ruins of a fortified village up in the pass between the Grand and Petite Luberons, trips to L'Isle sur la Sorgue's Antiques and general market, the ochre quarries of Rousillon, Apt's Saturday market or further afield, Arles, San Remy, Les Baux (11th century citadel, great for kids who can be trusted with heights) and Glanum Roman ruined town. Ooh it's a lovely, lovely home in a glorious area. I recommend you go find out for yourselves but leave me a space in about 2 year's time.

Car: recommended

With low cost airline flights (e.g. Ryanair, EasyJet) to Marseille and Nimes (FlyBE to Avignon), why not consider a short break in Cucuron? Fast Eurostar and TGV links mean the train journey from London to Aix TGV station is just 7 hours. Car rental is widely available at airports and stations. Situated at the edge of the Luberon National Park, this is paradise for walkers and lovers of the outdoors. Nearby Lourmarin, designated one of the 'most beautiful villages in France', has a bustling Friday market. There are more villages to explore north of the Luberon including Bonnieux, Menerbes and Gordes. Yet the buzz and culture of the university town of Aix en Provence is only 30 minutes drive with historic Avignon some 60 minutes away. For those who cannot resist the Mediterranean, the port and beach at Cassis is just over an hour. During the summer, check out the art exhibitions and music festivals which are arranged throughout the region.

Notes:
The home is tastefully equipped and spacious. It will be most appreciated by a couple or two, or a family of 3 or 4 wishing to get away from it all to enjoy the relaxed pace of life in inland Provence, outside the fast lane. Reversible air conditioning units in each room provide cooling in summer and rapid heat in other seasons. There is wireless Internet access but no telephone in the house. It should be noted that the property has stone stairs between various levels, a terrace at roof level and does not have a garden or outside space. Therefore this home is unlikely to be suitable for young children (except infants). The owners use the property themselves when they can: they offer the home so that others can experience the charm of living in the oldest part of Cucuron, which they have so much enjoyed in recent years.
