The house is just steps from the San Felipe Pool and Tennis Center, including a large pool and Jacuzzi and a tennis court.
Borrego is surrounded by the largest State Park in the contiguous U.S., in the midst of world-class desert hiking. Whether you are up for a casual stroll or a more strenuous climb the property is minutes from unforgettable hiking trails. The pictures below are from hikes within 30 minutes of the house.
The property is a short drive to the charming mountain town of Julian near the Cleveland National Forest, or beautiful (but longer) drives to Joshua Tree National Park or the Salton Sea area. The Borrego area has a range of excellent golf courses, restaurants, art galleries, horse trails, and small airports. The property is an easy drive to a large off-road vehicle area: bring your dirt bike or rent a 'quad' for the day.

Jennifer Gallardo, Borrego Rentals
I have been hiking and backpacking the American desert for over 30 years. I had done a lot of backpacking in the 'four corners' area, mostly Southern Utah, as well as Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. 20 years ago I discovered the Anza-Borrego area, and have been going back there ever since.
I introduced my family to the desert a few years after I became familiar with it, and we all became desert devotees. My father ended up owning a home in the Rams Hill area of Borrego Springs, and after he passed away I inherited it and have been enjoying it with my own family ever since.
My wife and two girls have all become major desert enthusiasts. The kids get a lot of use out of the pool near our property, and we all love hiking, off-roading, horse-back riding, and just hanging around the wonderful town of Borrego.
We can only get out to Borrego once or twice a year, so we rent the place the rest of the year. We are happy to share our home with others who enjoy the desert country - our renters range from old desert hands, to ardent hikers, golfers, or newcomers to the area.
Our home is actually a home: nothing fussy or formal. The most frequent comment we get is how comfortable and 'at home' guests feel here. Each bedroom is large enough to stretch out and relax, and each has a patio or deck. The common room is just right for family meals, movie night, or sitting around the fireplace. We keep it stocked with games, cards and the like.
There are lots of indoor or deck spots to get away and read or relax by yourself. We are a hiking family, so I keep maps and books around and suggest hikes in our guest book.
Borrego Springs is a wonderful contrast to our lives in Chicago: it is refreshing to be in a town with no stoplights, no franchise restaurants, no traffic jams! We enjoy both desert and forest / mountain hiking, so we like the access to Cleveland National Forest.
We love to sit on our back veranda and watch the sun rise and set. We get lots of humming birds, quail, roadrunners, and all kinds of song birds.
Borrego Springs is one of two 'Dark Skies communities' in the U.S.; night lighting is kept to an absolute minimum. It gets wonderfully dark at night! There are lots of stargazers here, and the Park puts on periodic night sky talks / viewing.
For a desert hiker Borrego is perfectly situated: our house is 20 minutes from some great desert hikes. The Northern part of the Anza-Borrego has a wide diversity of plant and animal life; one of my favorite hikes goes through several distinct riparian zones; if you are a good hiker you can actually climb from the desert floor to the Alpine environment to the West. An hour or two South or 45 min. West gets you to the badlands, a truly unique environment. Throughout the park are desert streams, bouldering or climbing spots, wind caves, tunnels, slot canyons, and ancient pictographs. If you love hiking or just the outdoors you need to see and hike these deserts.
