Overview

Orcas Estate Rental Photos and Description

Estate, Main House and Guest House

This 14 acre secluded estate on the top of Scott Hill on Orcas Island is truly an oasis. It has over 180 degrees of magnificent marine and mountain views. Enjoy the 3,400 feet of living space on the main level plus the many luxury amenities like our 70-foot lap pool, complete exercise room, and hot tubs-- all with fantastic views. Explore our woods, pick fresh fruits, herbs, and greens in our organic garden, start a campfire and enjoy the westerly views, or just pick your favorite spot to relax. Listen to the birds sing while you relax in the hammock next to the ponds set in a peaceful opening in the Douglas fir forests. Then sit back, at the end of the day, with a drink and your friends and watch the sun set over the Gulf Islands.

As you enter our main house you will be immediately drawn to the expansive ocean views from the many windows of the living, dining, and kitchen areas. The main living area has a large screen TV; a large dining table; a family room; and spacious kitchen with all dishes and utensils needed to cook a gourmet meal. These areas, most bedrooms, the master bathroom, and the sitting area all have vaulted beamed ceilings, stone counters, elegant built-in cabinets, and custom dining tables. The 3 bedrooms (all with queen beds) are in the other end of the house with two bathrooms, a laundry room, and a sitting room with two stained glass windows and space for the convertible beds. The numerous decks add space to enjoy the peaceful views.

Our guest house also has beamed ceilings, stone counters, and elegant built-in cabinets. The design and accommodations are as nice as the main house - just smaller (with 3+ beds). Please contact Owner with any questions about guest house rental.

The lower spa level of the main house includes a large hot tub, 70-foot indoor lap pool, bathroom, pool table, and a fully-equipped exercise room.

Also available is a picnic area with a fire ring so you can enjoy a campfire with s'mores and beautiful sunsets.

Orcas Oasis also has a lovely meadow with wildflowers, space to run and explore, or play a game of horseshoes or croquet. There are two ponds where you can relax in the hammock and enjoy the sound of the birds splashing in the water.

About Barb Brunius

Bob & Barb moved from Minnesota to be close to the ocean and to sail. We bought a great 40ft racing sailboat and spent much of the last 13 years in competitive racing in the Pacific NW. Before moving we went shopping for land on Orcas and purchased 16 acres on the top of Scott Hill in the Victorian Valley. We built a custom home and guest home designed by renowned local Architect Roy Lundgren.

Barb Brunius purchased this estate in 1998

Why Barb Brunius chose Orcas

We built on the Scott Hill location due to its fantastic marine views to the SE, South, West ans NW. We also never tire of the year-round great sunsets. We built on Orcas Island because of its location -- on the water and close enough to the mountains for convenient skiing without living in the snow. We also love the weather. Orcas has short winters without much snow, cherry blossoms in February and March, sunny summers, and generally moderate temperatures.

What makes this estate unique

Privacy with expansive marine and mountain views, bird songs in a peaceful setting, camp fires in the woods, relaxing in the hot tub, swimming in the indoor 70-foot lap pool, and exercise facilities so you don't feel too decadent enjoying all the other amenities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Booking a rental house without having the chance to see what the property is like ahead of time always feels a bit risky. With Orcas Oasis, though, you can put those fears to rest. Situated at the top of a hill overlooking West Sound, the spacious main house offers top-quality finishes, comfortable living spaces, expansive views, and every modern convenience you could ask for. Special features include an indoor lap pool, exercise and weight room, a hot tub, and hundreds of feet of decking from which you can watch some of the most beautiful sunrises or sunsets you will ever see.

The property also includes a large open space behind the house which is terrific for kids or pets to run around in. Larger groups will find that the layout includes several different types of living space, both inside and out, so those wanting some time away from the main group can find some solitude. Barb and Bob have created an oasis on Orcas Island that we hope to be able to revisit again and again.

Lovely Property

  • 5 of 5

The pictures don't really do the property justice. It is very nicely finished and has very broad views over the island and surrounding water. Having a pool and hottub is great and there's a large field as well if you have kids that want to run around. We stayed here for a 70th birthday and very much enjoyed the experience it worked well for 2 families and the grandparents.

Absolutely stunning! Amazing way to end a holiday

  • 5 of 5

We arrived on an early ferry but Barb (the owner) was happy to let us check in early..so happy that we could as we were quite tired.

We thought we were getting a room NOT the entire home and were quite gobsmacked that we has such a stunning home as "ours" for 5 days!

The home is beautiful, the view is breathtaking, the silence is golden. Coming from small home in Western Australia surrounded by concrete & city sounds, this was utter bliss!

It truly has spoiled us for places to stay in the future!

Each day we would do a Whale Watch and absolutely enjoy relaxing in this wonderful home whilst waiting for the whale watch. We never usually relax on holiday like we did here and it was wonderful.

The kitchen has everything you need and was great to eat home cooked meals on holiday. The little grocery store in town has more choice than any of the supermarkets here in Australia!!

We didn't explore the grounds much as I was still recovering from knee surgery so was on crutches (yes, the flights of stairs to get to the home was a bit of a challenge but worth it) which I was disappointed about BUT maybe next time?

Nothing like waking up in the morning to hear the honk of the ferries and seeing majestic Bald Eagles on tree outside the kitchen.

My husband loved having a gym and the pool so he could do a workout.

AND thanks to Barb for the fresh delicious strawberries, yum!

3 days after we left here, we were on a plane for 40+ hours heading home to Western Australia, still in a state of "WOW!" after staying here

Thanks again for letting us stay at your beautiful home, we think about it with much joy

I would recommend this home to anyone as it is perfection

Top of the World

  • 5 of 5

Orcas Oasis will spoil you for any other VRBO. You can see the other San Juan Islands, Canada, the Olympic range, even Mt. Rainer from the deck on a clear day. You can watch the ferries come and go. The house is beautiful, clean and very well appointed. You won't want for anything. The lap pool, hot tub and pool table will keep you busy. If not, try the horseshoes or swing in the hammock. The bed was super comfortable. We didn't get around to using the jacuzzi tub. Maybe next time. The furniture is very comfortable, the TV's are big and have hi-def not to mention Blue Ray players which nobody has in our experience. Enjoy the lower deck or the upper deck as the sun dictates. Grill something delicious on the beautiful Weber. Enjoy Barb's garden! We didn't have time to use the fire pit this trip. The weather was so nice we didn't have an indoor fire. You will be on top of the world if you stay here and you won't want to leave. Ever. Barb is very helpful and super organized. She will see us again.

Lovely week at Orcas Oasis with our grown sons

  • 5 of 5

This a magnificent spot - views right out over Puget Sound with all its islands, mountains in the distance. This is a large house set on a large property. We enjoyed the indoor lap pool and outdoor jacuzzi, good TV for watching the World Cup that was on. In the days we went off hiking at different places on the island and found some nice places to eat. Mostly we barbecued on the deck enjoying the spectacular sunsets.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. We enjoyed meeting you and your family. We are glad you enjoyed the many views of the Olympic Mountains over the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the many islands while you were here. Actually, the inland waters of the Pacific Northwest are called the Salish Sea. We hadn't heard that term until we moved to Orcas Island 16 years ago. Orcas Island and the other San Juan Islands are centrally located (north to south) in the Salish Sea. It includes the waters of Puget Sound to the south, the Straits of Georgia to the north, and the waters in between. I'll include Wikipedia's definition of the Salish Sea for those that are interested. "The Salish Sea (/ˈseɪlɪʃ/ SAY-lish) is the intricate network of coastal waterways located between the south-western tip of the Canadian province of British Columbia, and the north-western tip of the U.S. state of Washington. Its major bodies of water are the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound. It reaches from Desolation Sound at the north end of the Strait of Georgia to Oakland Bay at the head of Hammersley Inlet at the south end of Puget Sound. The inland waterways of the Salish Sea are partially separated from the open Pacific Ocean by Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula, and are thus partially shielded from Pacific Ocean storms. Major port cities on the Salish Sea include Seattle, Vancouver, Tacoma, Bellingham, and Victoria." We hope to see your family again if you ever get back to the Pacific Northwest. Barb & Bob Brunius

Absolutely awesome! Recommend to all!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the guest house for five days at the end of March. It was amazing. The location and the views were incredible. Barb was so nice and helpful, and the guest house kitchen had everything we needed. Our boys are 3 and 5, and they had the best time running all over the property and swimming in the pool. I hope we will be able to stay here again in the future.

Exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous, well laid-out home, very clean with stunning views - the online photos do not do this justice. Every amenity and lots of bedroom options for larger groups. Owners are very responsive and helpful to email and phone inquiries - even brought us fresh strawberries from their garden upon our arrival. Anticipate early pre-payment (spelled out in contract), owners live and stay on the property, and be sure to have a solid vehicle to navigate very steep gravel mountain road to property and for sight-seeing the island. Would definitely recommend!

1 mile from the Orcas Ferry landing. Google Maps (or your car's G.P.S.) should be accurate from ferry landing to Orcas Oasis. But don't count on GPS to find your way around Orcas as the maps often do not show Orcas local roads accurately.

We are 1 miles from a great grocery store, marina, restaurant, kayak tours, tour boats to see Orca whales, and coffee shop. We are 2 miles from Westsound village and about 7 miles from Eastsound.
