Java Kai is away from it all but when you want city action Honolulu and Waikiki is only 35-45 minutes away.
Airport is 30-35 min drive.
Nearest grocery store is Times Supermarket at 7 min drive south to Koolau Shopping Center. There is a MacDonalds on the entry as well as Consolidated movie theaters, gas, and other restaurants, shops.
Kaneohe town is less than 15 min drive and has lots more shopping options and the Windward Mall. Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center has Safeway, Longs, Walgreens, Blockbuster, multiple restaurants, Jamba Juice, Starbucks, banking, and gas station. The mall has Macy's, Sears, food court, restaurants, great shopping, and Consolidated movie theaters.
Kailua Beach and town is 25 min drive south. Kailua has great eateries, shopping, and sandy family beaches and is world renowned for great windsurfing.
Within 10 minutes drive visit Senator Fong's Plantation, Hart and Tagami Galeries for amazing art and gardens in Kahaluu, Byodo Temple, in Temple Valley, where they have created a replica of a 900 year old Japanese Buddhist Temple surrounded by a huge pond filled with 1000's of large koi fish. Feed the fish and ring the giant gong!
Hoomoluhia botanical park in Kaneohe is filled with amazing plants and beautiful hiking trails.
If you head north 3 miles, you can enjoy the peaceful, uncrowded, sandy family beaches at Kualoa Beach Park. Chinaman's Hat Island is just off the shore here.
Kualoa Ranch boasts over 4000 acres of beautiful ranch, valley and mountain lands. This was the filming site for King Kong and Jurassic Park, amongst other notable movies. Kualoa Ranch is a working cattle ranch but it is an adventure resort also. It offers a myriad of fun things to do including horseback riding through amazing trails, ATV's, scuba/snorkeling tours, jet skiing, exotic animal sanctuary, fishpond tours, and shops and restaurant.
Polynesian cultural Center is 20 min drive to Laie. Enjoy the day or the whole evening for entertainment, culture, I-max theater, great theater shows, firedancing competitions, meals, shopping, and more.n
Sunset Beach and Pipeline are 40 min drive and are must see beaches. Surfing competitions are held here in winter months. Swimming/snorkelling is fabulous in summer months. There is also a lovely boardwalk that leads all the way to Shark's Cove in Pupukea where snorkelling is enjoyed.
Waimea Beach is about 5 minutes past Sunset. This beach is amazing with deep white sand beaches and off shore rock formations that tease people to jump off of them into the waters below (beware... it is posted for people not to jump off the rocks here). The waters are crystal clear and the sunsets on the north shores are fabulous.
Across from the beach is Audubon's Waimea Botanical Park. The gardens and hike to the waterfall are magnificent.
Historic Haleiwa town is a 50 minute drive and is full of great shopping, eateries, fine dining, and Matsumoto's famous shave ice.
