About Michael Hicks

We are a Family who has had the property for generations. We built the Cabin from the ground up mostly with our own hands and the hands of friends except for the massive logs that it in built of. We used the stone from the creeks for all the walls and fire place, we stained the floors, laid the brick in the kitchen floors and landscaped it all over years of thought. We have had very precious and super special times there and the peace and joy linger in the air and are tangible and spiritual. We are loving, kind and caring as a family and are thrilled when others see the beauty that has been and will always be in our hearts the way we do.

Michael Hicks purchased this cabin in 1991
Why Michael Hicks chose Knoxville

It is rustic yet modern, it is so tucked away but and totally secluded but only 15 min from most anything you desire. The nature there has never been disturbed and most of the millions of trees are old and full of character. The private apartment with it's own bath, kitchen and living area with private entrance, is so great for privacy for certain guest in your party that may need it. There are three Balconies one is 40 feet long with swings and rockers and the other two are 35 feet up so you get a tree house effect. The trails, creeks, water falls, pastures, graveyard and caves make for a ton of fun for the curious hiker. The 360 views from the house in the winter months of the mountains are stunning (180 views when the leaves are on the trees) and the 360 views year round from the pastures and creeks are year round.

What makes this cabin unique

Radical seclusion and privacy, the huge parcel of land of 80 acres, the rustic real log cabin feel that is hand crafted but with modern conveniences and the amount of people that it can accommodate.

Cabin in the woods

1 of 5
Submitted: April 25, 2013 Stayed: April 2013
The cabin was very nice and secluded in the woods. The directions on the rental agreement were NOT correct. The address that I was to meet at to get the key was a vacant trailer. I was a woman alone in the middle of the woods trying to look for the place to find the key where there was NO ONE. I tried to call all 3 numbers of which I could reach NO ONE! I finally went down a dirt road where I was approached by an older man that stated he cleaned the cabin and would show me the way to the cabin. The cabin was VERY OUT DATED and unclean. The beds and pillows smelt like moth balls. The price we paid for the cabin was a reasonable price, but for what we received I would have rather stayed in a hotel. The people who rented the cabin out where never available by phone to reach when you called them. When you would leave a message it would be three to four days before someone called you back. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Owner's Response: We have had nothing but great reviews. This party had made their reservation just two days before arrival. They were sent all the details and instructions on how to access the property and we were waiting on them to call with an arrival time as requested, they did not let us know. The claims of the property being unclean are simply not true, we pride ourselves on keeping everything very fresh and do it ourselves with great pride and joy. It saddens us that the guests felt it necessary to make false claims because they didn't read their emails where instructions were when arriving before their departure.

Tranquility

My family and I enjoyed the simplicity of this cabin. It may not be as elaborate as many that you may see, but it certainly will give you that down home feeling. The rooms are very comfortable and the outside grill area is excellent. I plan to spend more time here in the future.

Nice cabin

4 of 5
Submitted: November 5, 2012 Stayed: November 2012
Four of us very much enjoyed our stay at this cabin. It is spacious, comfortable and quiet. Oak Ridge, with most amenities, was very near (10 minutes). The Obed, were we were climbing, was fairly close (40 minutes). It worked well for our trip, I would rent here again.

We thought the cabin was comfortably appointed, very pleasant and clean. Our one complaint was that the water pressure is rather low.

Okay, but needed a few extras

3 of 5
Submitted: October 7, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
There was a lot of good things, but there were a few things I would have liked to seen changed.

Plus: great location, close enough to town for groceries, etc., yet a great place for peace and quiet. Our dog loved scampering up the hills and ridges, and got lots of great exercise. As the indoor fireplace was "dangerous" to operate we were told when we arrived, we only used the outdoor fireplace, which worked great with the gas starter. The porches were nice to sit out on, and watch the hummingbirds. It was nice to have full satellite tv and internet service. The king bedroom had a private bath, which was nicely appointed. The kit. stove works VERY WELL -- be forewarned to turn down about 100 deg.

Minus: Unlike quoted in the description, no "rivers" on the property, only 1 creek (the others were actually run-off ditches); couldn't find the "caves", as the property owner didn't have a "map" of the property; the owner didn't set up the rental properly, as his mother was actually intending to stay with us (!!!) finally got that worked out; turns out the fireplace wasn't working (which was almost a reason for us to leave right away, as we had turned down other properties that had a fireplace); no place to put pantry items except on the counters which left little space for preparing meals; no table lamps beside the beds for reading; needed more lamps in the living room (very dark); the newer gas grill didn't light, even with a butane lighter, though the gas was turned on; no "waterfalls", though the creek had small ones (it was a very shallow creek); no toaster in the main cabin; the refrigerator had ice makers installed, but not hooked up to the water (we weren't informed of no ice, and had to run in to town for some right after we arrived -- would have been nice to heard that ahead of time); the DVD player didn't work, as there was no remote; the "waterfall" (man-made) wasn't operable.

With some changes by the owner, this will be a very nice place. I would prefer that the owner make sure that everything is working before allowing people to rent it, and if things weren't working, let the potential renter know beforehand.

There were a few games, but little books, so I recommend that you bring your own, especially if you have kids. The television is an older model, so if the kids bring their game console, be aware that it has only RGB connections -- the upstairs tv is very old and doesn't take RGB at all -- only for watching television.

Great Stay!

This was an absolutely wonderful place to spend the weekend! My group was able to sleep 13 people extremely comfortably in the cabin. The cabin itself is completely serene and isolated, however, grocery stores/gas/etc. is only about 10 minutes away. We had an absolute blast throughout the weekend and I strongly recommend this cabin to anyone looking to get away for the weekend or even spending a vacation in. You will not regret staying on this property!
