A wonderful break in Normandy

  • 5 of 5
We had a fantastic stay and enjoyed every moment. The property was fabulous and very well equipped and we could not have asked for a better place to have been based. Tranquil and beautiful yet only a short walk to the village. We plan to return.

Charming house, fabulous rural location!

  • 5 of 5
We spent a week falling in love with the countryside of Suisse Normandie and with the ease of travel from this lovely home to Honfleur, the D-day beaches, Mont Saint Michel and more. We overnighted one night in Cancale in order to explore a bit of Brittany.

John and Shannon were most accommodating and working with Sharon from the first email inquiring about the property to settling up the sad day we left was pleasurable. We were a group of six - three couples, two of whom were young adults. The house was clean and well appointed. The bedrooms were plenty large and the overall facilities were excellent. We especially enjoyed the fireplace and collection of the John and Sharon's cds! Be sure to take the back path down to Pont D'Ouilly at least once.

If you are looking for a tranquil base to explore I highly recommend this house. We ran out of time to do everything we wanted to see. Therefore, we hope to come back for a longer stay in the not too distant future.

Owner's Response: John and I are delighted and privileged to be able to welcome so many appreciative holidaymakers to our home, from all around the world, and we do everything possible to ensure that our "guests" are able to fully enjoy Les Vignes, its gardens and the exquisite surroundings of the Suisse Normande. Although we live next door we fully value the privacy of our tenants; however we are more than happy to offer assistance if required - from lending films and music to recommending restaurants, walks and places to visit etc. Thank you for taking the time to submit such a thoughtful review, it is very much appreciated as it helps other people to form an idea of what it would be like to spend their holiday in Calvados, either using Les Vignes as their base, or to simply relax and enjoy the flowers and wildlife in and around the garden and the surrounding countryside. We will be so pleased to welcome you here again, don't leave it too long!!

Fabulous house, wonderful location, great welcome!

  • 5 of 5
We were warmly welcomed by Sharon and John to their wonderful property. It was even better than expected: spacious, clean, well-maintained and very well equipped. Lots of garden space for the children to run around, play on the swings, hide-and-seek and treasure hunt. It was lovely to have access to a well tuned grand piano and a selection of music. The owners gave us plenty of information about the local area and places to visit. They were always on hand when needed though unobtrusive and we felt we had plenty of privacy. The setting is picturesque with lovely views and easy access to the village which has a variety of shops, including a well stocked mini market & two bakeries, and access to kayaking. We also had a meal at the local Hotel du Commerce which was absolutely delicious, though absolutely not for anyone watching their weight!
The main supermarket in Falaise about 15 minutes drive away can be coupled with a visit to the castle there. Lots of local markets to explore and a pleasant drive to Camembert to learn about the cheese and to places such as the Pegasus Bridge memorial.
A huge thank you to John and Sharon for making our stay so enjoyable. We would not hesitate to recommend this property and location as a place to stay and hope to be able to return there in the not too distant future.

Lovely Holiday Break

  • 5 of 5
Beautiful property in the charming village of Pont d'Ouilly.
We were warmly welcomed by Sharon and John, even though we didn't get there until very late Saturday evening. We had more than enough space and the house is charming. Everything you need is there including plenty of towels, kitchen equipment, hot water and great internet access. We had full use of the grounds and were able to sit out in the lovely weather in complete privacy.
The village is very pretty and has everything you need including a cash point and petrol.
Sharon and John live in the other part of the house but have their own section of grounds away from the rented part of the house. They are there if you need them for anything but otherwise are not seen. They are very charming people. The house is in a reasonable location to get to all sorts of attractions if you don't mind a little bit of driving. We can definitely recommend Falaise (the castle) and that is only about 20 mins away.
I would definitely recommend choosing this house for a holiday and I really hope we get the opportunity to go back again in the future.

Fabulous week in Normandy

  • 5 of 5
My husband, some friends and I had the pleasure of staying at La Cambuse for a week in May. We were warmly greeted and given a tour by John on our arrival. It was a very cool day so he had the fire going and flowers on the table when we arrived. Sharon has the house clean, well decorated and inviting. We felt very much like welcome guests in someone's home. We had dinner at the house on three of our evenings - the kitchen is well equiped so we had no problems making a nice dinner. The grounds are lovely. There is so much to see and do in Normandy it is quite a difficult decision to decide whether to go out or just relax at home with a book.
We felt incredably welcome thanks to Sharon and John and would go back any time. The house is well situated to do the beachs, Honfleur, the Mont, etc. We liked the surrounging area as well and John provided us with good recommendations as to where to go.
I would absolutely recommend staying here - the problem comes when it is time to leave............we didnt want to.

Owner's Response: We are always delighted to welcome such appreciative guests to stay in our home. Thank you for letting us know how much you enjoyed our house and the surrounding area. It is a great joy for us to know that you (and many other people) who have stayed at La Cambuse, have soaked up the ambience of this rustic and unspoiled old farmhouse in its natural environment.
We are really sorry that on this occasion Sharon was unable to be there with John to welcome you. However, John was very pleased to have met you and enjoyed your company over dinner on the last evening, thank you!
We both look forward to the possibility of welcoming you both and/or your friends here again in the future.

Fabulous Normandy Home. Iconic French Living.

  • 5 of 5
What a wonderful place to stay. Peaceful, tranquil French living. John and Sharon are great hosts. They make a vacation feel like a vacation. The house is only a short walk down a relatively rugged pathway, but it certainly was an enjoyable walk to the town. The town has a wonderful Patisserie with croissants and baguettes that are to die for.

Very short distance from Falaise and the birthplace of William the Conqueror. Also within an hours drive of the D-Day beaches and Bayeux (what a great town). Caen is also 35 minutes away and you can easily catch a train and visit Paris for a day or so if you so desire.

My family usually vacation at homes or apartments or townhouses instead of hotels. I have to say this was probably the best place we have ever stayed. If you want to visit the Normandy area you could not go wrong by staying at John and Sharon's lovely Gite.
