A TALE OF TWO CITIES - CARCASSONNE

Carcassonne is a tale of two cities - divided by the River Aude - the ancient walled Cite and fairy-tale castle on the plateau on the right side of the river and the 'newer' Bastide Saint-Louis or lower town on the left..

Theories on how Carcassonne got its name abound, but arguably the most popular is the story of Dame Carcas, which dates to a siege of the City in the early Middle Ages.

According to legend, around 8th Century the Frankish king tried to starve Carcassonne's Saracen population into submission.

After a long siege foodstocks were severely deplenished and defeat was looming - but the ruler's wife Carcas had a bright idea: she gave orders for a pig to be force fed with the very last sacks of grain, and then tossed over the city walls.

When the pig fell and split open, revealing the contents of its stomach, the watching troops were fooled into believing the inhabitants still had plenty of supplies.

As they retreated in dispair, the jubiliant townsfolk called for church bells to be rung in triumph: 'Carcas, sonne!' ('Ring Carcas!').

Today visitors to La Cite can admire a head and torso statue of a plump, smiling woman, representing the town's namesake, mounted on a column near the Porte Narbonnaise.

A more likely theory, however, is that the name comes from the Celtic Carsac, or the Roman Carcaso or Carcasum, (an important Roman trading post on the site some 2000 years ago).

Others say it derives from Occitan, from the words carac (meaning rock, after the spur on which it sits), and sonne (meaning wood, for the surrounding forest).

We have just returned from a fantastic stay at this apartment-which is only 10 minutes from the airport. It is beautifully appointed with the most amazing views of the Medieval city. The road is blissfully quiet and we woke every morning to just birdsong .It is the perfect place for a chilled out weekend or week! The apartment itself was immaculate and very comfortable, everything is catered for and it is situated perfectly between the old city and the new so there is lots to see with very little walking. The owners even left us a bottle of the local champagne on arrival which was really thoughtful. We will ,without a doubt, return. - Stephanie

First of all, Inga and Mick, the owners, were incredibly easy to work with, very helpful, and communicated promptly. This all takes a lot of the stress away in arranging travel.

The apartment was amazingly equipped. From little things like vegetable peelers to a washer/drier, it had it all. The bed was comfy, the location was quiet and the price is fair.

We used the apartment more as a base to get out and explore the region. And it is worth exploring. Take the backroads, stop and visit the little villages along the way to Minerve, Minervois, Lagrasse, Mayronnes and the sculpture walk, and a bike ride along the lovely Canal du Midi as starters. We did Minerve and Minervois one day, Lagrasse and Mayronnes another, the Canal du Midi on one day, and another just exploring the wines in the area. Of course, you have to visit the Cite on the hill but get there early and beat the crowds.

Thank you Inga and Mick.
Owner's Response: It is our aim to make our guests feel very welcome at all times and make their stay here in Carcassonne a memorable experience. We want our guests to feel at home and aim to provide comfortable and easy accommodation.

Great apartment - fantastic location

We spent a wonderful 4 days here last week. Prior to arriving we received excellent communication from firstly Jason and latterly Inga. The apartment itself is very well appointed and equipped and comfortable and is in a fantastic location in a quiet street just below La Cite. The view of the Castle from the apartment windows is stunning. In fact the location is ideal for visiting the uphill Cite and the lower town - both of which are in easy walking distance. Restaurants both uphill and downhill were universally good - we'd particularly recommend Au Jardin de la Tour in La Cite though. Local shops just round the corner in rue Trivalle are welcoming and stock most of the things that you'll need.

We'll definitely be coming back to both Carcassonne and Apartment Monet.

We found this apartment absolutely delightful. It is well designed, very clean and spacious, located in the quaintest of streets. It proved an ideal base for exploring the castle and the town. The communication from Jason and Inga, the owners, was very good. Prior to our arrival, we were sent comprehensive information about the apartment's location, local amenities and ideas for places to visit. We hired a car, which we were able to park at the nearby Place St Gimer, approx 150 metres away. If you hire a car, don't miss Limoux and Mirepoix on market day. Both towns are charming.
Just around the corner from the Monet is a bakery. The couple running it were very friendly and helpful (the lady even gave advice on French pronunciation).
I would highly recommend this apartment. Should we ever return to Carcassonne, I wouldn't look for any other accommodation. Five star!

We spent a lovely couple of days here; beautiful views of the castle. The apartment is well equipped and the owners were kind enough to lend us a travel cot and high chair for our two year old son. It was a very short walk to the cite (this was a priority for us with our pram and little boy).
