A TALE OF TWO CITIES - CARCASSONNE

Carcassonne is a tale of two cities - divided by the River Aude - the ancient walled Cite and fairy-tale castle on the plateau on the right side of the river and the 'newer' Bastide Saint-Louis or lower town on the left..

Theories on how Carcassonne got its name abound, but arguably the most popular is the story of Dame Carcas, which dates to a siege of the City in the early Middle Ages.

According to legend, around 8th Century the Frankish king tried to starve Carcassonne's Saracen population into submission.

After a long siege foodstocks were severely deplenished and defeat was looming - but the ruler's wife Carcas had a bright idea: she gave orders for a pig to be force fed with the very last sacks of grain, and then tossed over the city walls.

When the pig fell and split open, revealing the contents of its stomach, the watching troops were fooled into believing the inhabitants still had plenty of supplies.

As they retreated in dispair, the jubiliant townsfolk called for church bells to be rung in triumph: 'Carcas, sonne!' ('Ring Carcas!').

Today visitors to La Cite can admire a head and torso statue of a plump, smiling woman, representing the town's namesake, mounted on a column near the Porte Narbonnaise.

A more likely theory, however, is that the name comes from the Celtic Carsac, or the Roman Carcaso or Carcasum, (an important Roman trading post on the site some 2000 years ago).

Others say it derives from Occitan, from the words carac (meaning rock, after the spur on which it sits), and sonne (meaning wood, for the surrounding forest).

Very pleasant apartment close to amenities

  • 5 of 5
Stayed here for just over a week - the flat is clean, modern and well laid out, with everything you might need from kitchenware thru to satellite TV and wifi. It's only 5 to 10 minutes walk to Le Cité, depending on how quickly you can walk up the cobbled ramp into the Porte de L'Aude! Similarly, you're only minutes away from the Pont Vieux, past well laid out public gardens and woodlands by the river, which then lead into the 'new town' a further 10 or 15 minutes on. A special mention must go to the owners, Inga and Mick, who honestly couldn't do more to make you feel welcome and ensure you enjoy your time in their apartments and Carcassonne itself. I'd have no hesitation in recommending their apartments.

Reluctant to leave

  • 5 of 5
My friend and I stayed at Renoir for 4 nights. The location of this apartment is perfect for a stay in this area, it is accessible for a day in La Cite, and La Basse, as well as exploring the local area. It is easy to find and there is free local parking under 5 minutes walk away. Communication between myself and Inga was constant, helpful and friendly, made all the more hospitable when both Inga and Mick knocked on our door to introduce themselves and share their favorite spots of the area. I was shown the other apartments in the building and they were of equally high standard and all with their own personality. This apartment is bigger that the pictures lead you to believe. The sofa bed is extremely comfortable, the shower is really good and the street is very quiet. The self catering facilities are easy to manage. Other guests have left suggestions and comments in a book in the sitting room which, alongside Inga & Mick's recommendations proved very helpful. There is so much to see and do in this area that I know I will be returning. I would recommend exploring La Basse as well as Le Cite, and I would definitely recommend staying at Renoir. Waking early and walking to the shops to get breakfast was a highlight.

The apartment is clean and modern with a nice kitchen and bathroom.
It was great living so close to the Medieval City but the apartment is also convenient to the main part of the city. We had wanted to experience life close to the locals and you do just that. There was a lot of very useful material about 'what to do and where to visit' left by previous residents.

A Welcome Break

  • 5 of 5
From the moment we entered into email exchanges with Jason and Inga they proved to be very efficient and communicative - definitely the reason why we decided to rent their accommodation.
Inga had offered to pick us up from the airport and also to buy us some groceries. As a result we landed at 10am and were in the property at about 10.45. Inga was very personable and having shown us around Renoir she left us - making sure that we knew how to contact her if necessary. (we saw her again when she returned us to the airport)
The apartment really is very well decorated, furnished, clean and so close to the Cite. To my delight they even had a hi-fi system with a lead for my ipod ;-)
Thanks to Inga and Jason we had a great few days in Carcassonne and we would not hesitate to rent one of their apartments in the future.

Renoir Apartment

  • 5 of 5
We have recently returned from a four day break in Carcassonne staying at the perfectly located Renoir apartment and had a fabulous time. The apartment was beautifully furnished, very clean and comfortable and very well equipped. Inge was so helpful, getting some groceries in for us upon arrival and even picking us up from the airport; it made the trip so much easier and enjoyable. The apartment is excellently located, just at the foot of the ramparts of the old Cite and a short walk into Carcassone town.
I would certainly recommend this apartment (and the one upstairs which we saw) as being well-located, comfortable, and clean with very, very friendly and helpful owners and friends.
