Lovely but...

  • 4 of 5

First of all, let me say that I loved this little place- the cabin was great-rooms are well arranged and very comfortable. The windows are situated perfectly for ventilation. It was so comfortable with the windows and doors open to the delicious breeze. The fact that the beach is so close is such a bonus and what a beach!!!!. Totally beautiful and so wonderful to walk on.

There were some things that could have been done to make visitors feel more welcome.

It would have been nice if coffee, sugar and coffee-mate had been provided for guests who arrive late in the evening and would like coffee in the morning before the stores are open.

Extra toilet paper should have been provided

Soap for the washing machine should be provided

A list of all the TV stations available and a basic idea of what is on them

At the front door there should be a list of what the visitors are required to do, what is recyclable and how it's supposed to be dealt with and what visitors need to do before leaving that isn't necessarily included in the cleaning fees we paid

***A major concern was the electrical situation. Each time the fridge cycled on or off, the lights dimmed. We were doing a load of laundry and someone put their hand into the washing machine to readjust the load and got a bit of a shock. This has the potential to be a fire hazard and could put visitors at risk.

Some other lesser concerns were:

the switch on the floor lamp is loose

the tap in the main bathroom sink drips

the back screen door needs to be replaced (including the rusty hardware)

all the cushions are dirty and need to be washed

wash windows and screens

some of the screens need to be replaced

microwave buzzes strangely when being used

more teaspoons needed

more tea towels needed

provide a dustpan to go with the broom so visitors can keep the sand under control

repaint the window frames

Owners need to care about their properties, if they don't why would visitors care (except for their own sense of responsibility and desire to leave things better than they found them.

Great location

Things I loved... One house behind the beach, 3 full bedrooms, more than 1bathroom, great cross breeze, Polynsian cultural was right across the street, it was central located(1hour up and down the island for what we did). I know it said it was an old property but, something's just need to be changed out at one point such as the carpet in the master. It is really grimy from age and moister. It felt like we were walking on that sticky grime you find on top of your cabinets in your kitchen. Putting your bare feet in the covers made me feel duty. The cloth bench also was extramly stained. There is a screen door on the inside of the home it also was dirty, didn't want to touch or bump your clothes on it. So the home seemed quite clean but I feel some areas need some attention. Yes I would LOVE to go back. I hope these things will have improved by then.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

Location is excellent base of operations for the north shore and rest of Oahu. Location relative to the beach is amazing Plenty of room.

Only negative is that investment needs to be made in at least a detailed paint job to some parts of interior plus front bedroom needs quieting and window maintenance for both that room and living room.

Would recommend property for all multiple categories below but the software only allows one button for Recommend.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

This rental has beautiful beach access (30 second walk from house, very few people) and the porch has an ocean view. We fell asleep every night to the sound of the waves crashing on beach. The house is within walking distance to the Polynesian Cultural Center (5 min) and Foodland/plaza (8 min). Turtle Bay Resort is an easy 12 minute drive north and Sunset Beach (and Ted's Bakery) is another 5-10 minutes along the Kamehameha Hwy. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishes/pots/appliances, the wireless internet works well and there is great water pressure in the shower. There are some beach towels but we were glad we brought a few. One of the beds is squeaky and bouncy, a little uncomfortable for two people. There is some peeling paint and the tile floor could use a good scrubbing. It's not the most luxurious place but it met our needs quite nicely.

Loved it but need some little attention!

  • 4 of 5

We are locals & were looking for a different get-a-way instead of hotels. The price was right for four nights. The cottage was just right for us six adults & 4 children. The cottage was clean & the bed rooms were bigger than expected. It was nice to have the washer/dryer available. The kitchen had a faucet issue but was immediately replaced the next day. Loved the water pressure. We loved the small porch especially. We spent many hours out there. It would be nice to extend the roof out more over the patio because it didn't take much rain to overtake the area. Would like to recommend a smaller table for the living room & not glass. It took up too much space. Our Thanksgiving week was met with the worst winds & rough sea of the year & gray skies. Though we never made it in the water yet we enjoyed the beach daily. There were robe swings on the beach which kept the kids busy. Thank you for whoever left them behind. There is a tarp area for parking at the back that was not secured tight & it was very noisy with the flapping especially at bedtime. We would suggest removing it & maybe replacing with a wood/vinyl fence if the intention is privacy between tenants. These are just suggested small improvements yet we were overall happy & would love to do it again. We would definitely recommend to adventurous travelers that just need a nice place to stay. The location was great. A walk to Polynesian Culture Center, Mormon Temple a few minutes away, small grocery shops, eatery & the famous North Shore is not a far drive. Oh & a cute small movie theater which we took advantage of. Would like a shout-out to the caretakers. They were very accommodating to our urgent need. They’re locals & with much aloha care. Mahalo & Aloha

Buyer's Remorse at Kealoha Cottage. Would never stay here again. Ever.

  • 1 of 5

Certainly not paradise for us. We vacation a lot and use rental properties often. This was the worst one we have stayed in, and the most expensive. It was a huge let down in so many ways. This cottage is so old, run down, smells horrible, and was not hospitable in any way. Hugely disappointed that our stay in Hawaii had to be in such a horrible place. The night that we arrived, my husband and I had the worst buyer's remorse with this place and my 4 yr old was crying that she didn't want to stay there and wanted to go home. My kids always love staying in rental homes. Not this one. The owner provided us no sense of hospitality or customer service. She provided us a place to stay and nothing more. It was the most stripped down, barest of bare necessities vacation rental I have ever stayed in. Other reviewers had mentioned they had left beach toys since there were none available at the beach cottage. It appears the cleaning crew or owner takes anything and everything that anyone has left to make the stay more enjoyable. We called the caretaker to ask about beach toys that others had left, and were told the owner does not leave them on the property because then she is liable for injuries. Since when does a sand shovel and pail cause liability? This is the only beach house I have ever rented that has no beach toys. We also asked about a sponge or scrubber for washing dishes as there is no dishwasher. We were told that the owner wants us to use a washcloth. Um, no thank you. I have no idea where a washcloth has been. We went and bought a $1 sponge. Could the owner really not provide a $1 brand new sanitary sponge to every renter? Seriously. The kitchen furniture is a patio table and patio chairs. The beds are horrible. There were no extra garbage bags. So we had to just use our own grocery sacks. 3 rolls of toilet paper for 5 people. We barely made it. My husband had to pry the bathtub plug out with a knife. One toilet squealed every time you used it and would continue to squeal until you jiggled the handle just right to make it stop. The very old microwave could not properly pop a bag of popcorn. The chain to turn on the overhead light broke off when we pulled it. Everything is just run down and old. Had I known the condition, and had I paid about half of what I did, it might have been okay. The price that I paid was already discounted for the season. I can't imagine the buyer's remorse people who pay full price must feel. Horribly, horribly disappointed.
