The Austin House, located in a small coastal village is situated in the center of Down East Maine. This is a quiet place, close to many scenic areas and parks that offer places for all kinds of outdoor activities. The home was an Inn during the latter part of the 19th century owned by the local blacksmith, Moses Austin. The home was completely renovated in 2010, preserving most of the original Greek revival architecture. It is a cozy place to just sit on the front porch and watch the tide come in and out. The location is convenient for sight seeing in either direction as it is only an hour from most major attractions from Bar Harbor to Campobella Island. The property includes a vegetable and flower garden that guests are free to harvest.

History of area: Addison was a ship building town in the latter part of the 19th century. There were two shipyards in Addison at the time and the town's life revolved around the industry. The residents not only built the ships but also sailed them all over the world. Most of the town residents owned shares in the ships and so shared in the profit and losses of the industry. Many of the residents today of Addison are descendants of the ship builders and ship captains. They carry on the tradition of earning their living from the sea today with many ports here full of fishing vessels. Today, there is a 90 ft. schooner being built just down the street. The current owners of the ship hope to launch in the fall of 2012.

Blueberries: This area is known as the Blueberry capital of the world! The blueberry barrens are beautiful year round, turning blue in July when the berries are ready to harvest, and red in the fall. You will find blueberries everywhere for sale at this time and they are yummy! The Machias Wild Blueberry Festival takes place in August. And if you are here then, don't miss the Black Fly Ball - a dress-up dance party for all!

The Austin House is located in a small coastal village on the Pleasant Bay. This is a unique area in Maine where few tourists venture. The beauty of the coast is the main attraction here, although the lakes and mountains just a short drive from the coast are just as enjoyable. Whether hiking or driving, the views provide endless hours of sight seeing. The town has a public boat landing, so if you are a kayaker, sailor, or have your own boat, you can launch it just down the street. There are other activities near by such as shopping at antique stores, trips to islands on lobster boats and puffin viewing (Make reservations with Captain Paul at Pleasant River Boat Tours: 207-598-6993), whale watching boat rides, public church suppers, festivals, and golf.

The Austin House

5 of 5
Submitted: October 28, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
We visited The Austin House in July 2012 and were thrilled by what we found. It is a real gem of a place, beautifully refurbished, retaining lots of the original features of the 1800's which allows one to get a real sense of that period. The house is incredibly well equipped, so it has a home from home feel which we really enjoyed. The locally caught mackerel and lobster we cooked were accompanied with delicious salad vegetables we were able to pick straight from the house's garden.

The area is a treasure trove. You can dip into all that Bar Harbor has to offer, from Whale watching to cycling around the Carriage Trails. At the same time you can access fantastic fishing and incredible walking just short car journeys away. Every day we did something new, from exploring Campobello Island, to tasting the lobster lunch at the local town day at Millbridge, to eating wonderful blueberries in Cherryfield and to seeing beautiful fireworks in Addison.

Lynne and her husband went out of there way to make our stay perfect, and as a result we know this will be the first trip of many.

Great Austin House!

5 of 5
Submitted: August 20, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
At first, we were worried about bugs since we have never experienced staying at an old house and there were no reviews yet. To our surprise, the house was completely renovated and contemporary. It is very clean, quiet and feels like a second home to us. There is no cable however the internet was fast so it was easy to watch television shows and movies through the internet. The owners allowed us to pick the vegetables from their garden and it was very lovely. The owners allowed us to borrow their fishing rods. There are many places where you can go fishing for mackerels near the house. People in the community are very warm-hearted and quiet. We enjoyed sitting on the porch. Another new thing we experience at this house was drying the clothes outside on the clothesline, which was a lot of fun. Overall, we recommend this house and we hope to come back sometime in the near future.
