About Daniela

I am a native New Yorker who fell in love with Italy and moved there some ten years ago. I produce organic, cold pressed, vergine olive oil at Villa Bongiove. In addition, I write about art and I have a web-based radio program - Art International Radio on artonair.org. I live mainly in Rome now - where my daughter attends an American school - but I go to Villa Bongiove every chance I get, when there are no guests enjoying it.

Daniela purchased this villa in 2004
Why Daniela chose Figline Valdarno

I discovered Villa Bongiove while horseback riding in the surrounding hills. It belonged to an ancient noble family, the Dukes of Velluti Zati, but in recent times had fallen into disrepair. Ineluctably drawn to Villa Bongiove, I set about returning it to its former glory. There are a lot of spectacular properties like Villa Bongiove, but the profound sense of serenity mixed with beauty that I experienced at Villa Bongiove I have never felt anywhere else. I am delighted other people get to enjoy it.

What makes this villa unique

Was it the arched entry way? Or, the way the villa proudly overlooks the expansive valley where Leonardo is said to have painted the Mona Lisa? Or, maybe the purple hue that the rolling hills take on in the late afternoon? Villa Bongiove offers so many fine moments and special details, it is hard to tell what precisely won me over. Each guest of the villa finds their own special connection, too, which is why they leave even more enthusiastic than when they came.

Practically speaking, the advantage to choosing Villa Bongiove is the location - easily accessible yet secluded, in the heart of Tuscany, near all the wonderful cultural attractions. Plus, you can take a 20 minute train and be in the center of Florence, so you avoid the hassle of having a car in an ancient city.

Perfect holiday

Villa Bongiove was the ideal location for our holiday with two of our grown up children, and their families (nine of us in total). The location was very quiet, but near enough amenities if needeed- we bought croissants for breakfast each day from the local village shop about 1.5 miles away.

The villa itself had extensive accomodation which was well suited to three separate families. There was everything we could have wanted and anything extra we needed was always supplied promptly including the owner's own olive oil! Delicious. The only slight disadvantage was lack of wi fi which meant ipads did not work!

The grounds are wonderful and very very extensive including an olive grove, formal areas and open fields. The two eating areas and loggia allowed for much al fresco dining either in or out of the shade according to weather. The small grandchildren loved running round and just exploring. The large pool was well equipped with loungers etc just as shown in the photos, and was a slight distance from the house which was good when small children were running around, but not so far that it was an inconvenience. The dogs , which were mentioned in another review, were well behaved and an assett rather than the reverse

The owner could not have been more welcoming and was always a ready source of local information and advice. The week disappeared without feeling the need to go far - we visted Florence and Greve- but we had been to the area in general before. We were just looking for the location for a relaxing family holiday and this was perfect.
Owner's Response: We should have wi fi soon. Keeping our fingers crossed! :)
