Unique location, ideal for museums, nice restaurants, shopping and night life but also in an oasis of peace. On the roof terrace there is lots of sun and if you like water birds, you can feed them from outside the windows... A few minutes walking to the Waterloo square and flee market, the Jewish historical Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue, the Opera House, the Hermitage museum and the famous Music Hall (Carre) is around the corner.
Over a hundred years old and once a cargoship the 'Johanna' was transformed in 2006 into a modern and characterful House Boat. With inside some old features left in place (such as the wheelhouse with a wonderfull view in the direction of the river 'Amstel', it gives you an enchanting feel of what it was like to live on the water back then. Facilities of the Johanna (115 square meter): There is an open (with all the equipment) kitchen to the living room and the study.
One bedroom and a cupboardbed in the study with a very nice atmosphere (2 double beds). The bathroom has a bath and a shower cabin. There is a separated toilet.
Public transportation is nearby, you can hop on a bus or tram or with the underground to the Central train station in less than ten minutes. If you have a car you can reach the highway in about ten minutes also. The best way to get around, however, is by 'Rent a bike'.
Definitaely a Unique experience & House Boat. We stayed 1 week in September had great weather (1 day of light rain ). The boat was amaZing - great size, well furnished, great location. Coffee & a newspaper in the wheel house made for a great morning or restful afternoon. We had more room in the boat than in our apt in Paris. Everything in walking distance - markets, restaurants, sites, trams. The owners were very good at explaning the set up & use of all appliances. Only slightly difficult use was hatch way entry - needed a good push / lift to open - make sure you have good footing before opening ( I am 70+ yrs. old - had no problems). Already have recommended to friends; we would gladly stay again if returning to Amsterdam.
My husband and I stayed four rainy nights and days in Amsterdam. While the weather did not co-operate for us very well it just made our time in this lovely boat feel more homey and cozy. We could hear the rain pelting on the roof, lightning flashing through the skylights. It was wonderful! The boat was very comfortable and accommodating. The location allowed us to walk everywhere. A grocery store is less than a block away and there are many nice restaurants within walking distance. The owners were very helpful and patient as they waited for us to arrive on a late train from Paris. I would highly recommend the Johanna to friends or family. It's ideal for two couples or family of four or two to four traveling companions. We absolutely loved our stay here.
We had a wonderful stay on the Johanna houseboat. It had all the comforts of home. Much better than a hotel room. We enjoyed watching people go by on foot, on bikes, and in boats on the water. Lots to see in the neighborhood, and within a 30-minute walk of most sights in Amsterdam. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique experience.
The boat was exactly what we expected; it looks just like the pictures and the description is completely accurate. It’s spacious, comfortable and conveniently located to cafés, grocers, museums, etc. It definitely deserves all of the great reviews here. We would definitely stay there again.
My wife and I loved the Deen's beautiful houseboat and only wish we could have stayed there longer. It is very spacious, well appointed, and conveniently located to the heart of Amsterdam. We especially enjoyed the brightly lit cabin.
Our fellow travelers were so excited about our houseboat that we were entertaining in Johanna after spending only a few minutes there. If God blesses us with another opportunity to visit Amsterdam, we'll be sure to look first for this boat.
Stayed for four nights with a family of four, including two teens (14 & 16). The accommodations were exactly as presented. Fine location, especially given the walkability of Amsterdam. Obviously you are not staying here for hotel-like amenities, but if you want a more authentic experience, it can't be beat. It has all the comforts you'd expect, plus the added bonus of you own boat deck and the run of the house.
Be aware, some level of mobility is needed to deal with the steps in and out and the hatch/door - you don't have to be a mountain climber, but less mobile visitors may have issues as it is somewhat steep with small steps.
Wonderful experience and we would definitely consider it if we were to make a return trip.
