The Hummingbird House is in the residential area of 150+ acre gated community resort on the North Shore of white sand beaches and pristine coral reef. The 3 connected pods provide lots of privacy and social gathering space inside and around the very private outdoor pool. The gated community is one of tropical gardens, miles of secluded white sand beach, community pool, restaurant and PADI dive shop.
This 3 pod home surrounding its own pool is on 3/4 of an acre within a gated community of 150 + acres surrounding pristine Palmetto Bay. Palmetto Bay Plantation is a most unique development in that it has maintained and enhanced the natural beauty of the bay by its site planning, green space allocation and stewardship of the flora, fauna and marine life. It is a place to enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds that were the drawing cards of the Caribbean.
Hummingbird House location: This recently renovated and upgraded home is in the residential part of Palmetto Bay Plantation which is a gated community. It is on 3/4 of an acre and a golf cart is provided for quick and easy access to the beach, restaurant and dive shop. It has a private caretaker in addition to the private security provided by the development.
Three Pods: Hummingbird House consists of 3 pods that surround a private pool. The bedrooms have private seating areas within their pods. The great room is a pod to its self. Each area within the house is a separate building which offers privacy while still having connected enclosures. There are numerous areas to gather and enjoy each others company and there are numerous areas in which to escape and be alone.
Entertainment: There are several large flat screen TVs throughout this home that are connected to US satellite service. Internet access is provided within the home as well as an IPOD or MP3 docking station. Games are provided as are several dining areas.
I am one of the rental managers for this property. I also own a home in Palmetto Bay Plantation. I left a career in IT project management to go live full time on Roatan with my husband and son in 2003. We were there for 6 years and then returned to the US to be with our son who had returned to college and would soon be graduating. We wanted to be with him before he went off to start his own life.
The Owner purchased this house in 2010
The development in which this property located has remained true to the character it presented in 2003. The green space has been kept and the natural beauty of the bay maintained. It is one of the few locations on the island where native palms are found. The house is as unique as the development.
The resort hires Islanders so it is Islanders with whom you interact. They are joyful people whose first language is English. It has miles of beach without beach vendors and cruise ship tourists. You get to enjoy the best that Roatan has to offer in the way of gardens, marine life, dock, food, dive shop, quiet glorious space.
We visited Roatan during the rainy season and it was still one of our best family vacations. The Hummingbird House was beautiful and our contact for the house rental was very helpful. We received excellent instructions and suggestions for traveling to this island. Every detail from getting to the house, shopping around town, and communicating with the onsite managers went smoothly. The house was immaculate and the layout fit our family needs perfectly. The beach was beautiful and very private and the snorkeling was great! We had three generations with us and all of us had a wonderful time. We rented a vehicle; there was a mix up with our reservation (our fault, not the rental company's fault), and the only thing available was a 4 wheel drive truck. Turns out that was the best vehicle we could have had on the island! Highly recommend renting something with 4 wheel drive. We have been back home for a week and already planning when we can return to the Hummingbird House!
We had a wonderful week on Roatan at Hummingbird House. The owner was very responsive to emailed questions prior to the trip, and the onsite house managers (Tomas & his wife) kept the grounds & landscaping immaculate. You *must* rent a car, because it's at least 15-20 minutes to any sort of businesses. There is a steep flight of steps up to the front door & then 5-6 steps down to the bedroom pods - might be hard on people with severely impaired mobility.
- extremely spacious
- the community felt very safe, with a guard gate & people living onsite downstairs to watch over things
- kitchen was huge, with high quality equipment & pots/pans/etc.
- loved the private pool, perfectly sized for hanging out & relaxing
- pod setup gave all members of our party lots of privacy
- all furniture was very comfortable but not so fancy that you were afraid to mess it up
- A/C was extremely effective if left on all day long. If turned off/on it couldn't keep up w/ heat.
- staff at the restaurant was very welcoming & helpful, especially Cecelia (the owner)
- private community beach was gorgeous & never had more than about 20 people on it at a time. They were constantly raking & cleaning the beach.
- don't miss the local Garifuna singers & dancers who perform weekly at the restaurant!
- service requests made on-site either were taken care of after our rental period was up, or took repeated calls to get resolved.
- golf cart brakes were almost nonfunctional, which we were not informed about but had to discover for ourselves, only to be told that the onsite guy already knew about it. This seems dangerous.
- a member of our party stepped through a rotten board on the deck & they dragged something over the hole & left it there all week, and only replaced the board as we were checking out.
- guest bathroom shower did not have hot water all week. Master bath shower did, and guest bath sink did, but the shower didn't for some reason. Occasionally there would be 5-10 seconds of scalding water & then it was back to ice cold.
- pool was not cleaned prior to our arrival, and in fact was not cleaned until we made more than one phone call to the manager complaining that the pool was full of sand & turning cloudy & green.
Overall, we were satisfied with the value for money of this rental & enjoyed our trip. The home is lovely & small issues didn't cloud our trip - I just mentioned them for full disclosure. I hope we can return to Palmetto Bay soon! I miss the beach!
The place is super nice. The house has an excellent layout, and all the staff within the plantation are more than accommodating and friendly. The beach is one of the most tranquil places on the island. It has a really nice dock that goes out into the water with some hammocks at the end.
This is a very good house for a family or couple looking for a peaceful getaway.
I had a really good experience with the home managers from beginning to end. They are very quick to respond to emails and help with any slight problems or questions, and communicate very well with plenty of detail.
Please do note that it is pretty far away from the night life, and that you MUST rent a car if staying here. It is in a secluded part of the island on a dirt road, and it takes about 15-20 minutes to return to the grocery shops and bars. This is not the ideal location for a group of college students. This is the perfect spot for a family vacation.
The restaurant on site isn't cheap, but isn't completely ridiculous either. Plus, they have some really tasty food. Don't forget your sunscreen!
We recently rented the Hummingbird House in Roatan, Honduras. The house was beautiful, clean, and spacious. The information included a golf cart to go back and forth to the beach and before we arrived we knew that it was in for repairs, so to replace that we received a Jeep. The walk was only about 10 minutes but it was nice to have a vehicle to transport our snorkel gear, towels etc. Nice and quiet. The beach was very nice, a restaurant, and a dive shop where we decided to learn how to scuba dive...best experience ever. We had such a good time that we are considering returning to Roatan in November.
Palmetto Bay Plantation is over 200 + acres surrounding Palmetto Bay on the north shore of the island of Roatan. The north shore is the shore with beaches and Palmetto Bay has miles of secluded white sand beach along a pristine bay filled with Starfish, Wahoo, blooming coral, and a 100 year old wreck. There is no other development nearby other than the very small village of of Islanders a couple of miles away (by the beach) at Crawfish Rock. The islands only golf course is just on the NE of Crawfish Rock (15 minutes by boat). On this map Crawfish Rock is located incorrectly. It is on the opposite side of the island from French Harbor.
