Our home is your home! This is a lovely 3 bedroom home which is the second floor flat in a 2-unit Victorian building. With high ceilings, hardwood floors, big windows and gracious spaces, along with warm colors and tasteful furnishings, you will feel very comfortable and at home! Two large bedrooms sleep four adults comfortably, plus a small third bedroom can be used to accommodate up to six. The sunny and warm kitchen, dining room and deck look out on a lovely back garden with lemon trees and cala lilies, and pleasant vistas of Bernal Hill to the south and Noe Valley and Diamond Heights to the west. The flat is on a nice residential street in the central and hip Mission District. You'll find endless great restaurants and galleries, fun pubs, and interesting local neighborhood life in the Mission, just around the corner. But with its central location and great access to transport, it's also a great place to be based for enjoying the whole city or beyond!
The Neighborhood:: The house is on a residential street adjacent to the 24th Street corridor in the Mission District. The Mission is San Francisco at its absolute vibrant best! Historically the center of the Mexican community in SF -- now with gentrification and SF's most cutting edge food, art and cultural scenes -- it is a diverse and interesting place! Within a few blocks walk you'll find countless traditional Mexican eateries, along with some of the hottest 'foodie' destination spots in the city (St Francis Fountain, Dynamo Doughnuts, Roosevelt Tamale Parlor, Pal's Takeaways, Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream), fun pubs (Pop's!), the Brava Theater, plenty of other eatery choices including sushi, Thai and Vietnamese. The Mission is the center of public wall mural art in SF and has great galleries. BART rail, SF Muni bus and US-101/I-80 are all close with easy access to the rest of the City and the Bay Area. Downtown, SOMA and Castro all nearby and easy to enjoy.
The House:: Built in 1890, we purchased and renovated the house in 2002. It is pleasant and homey, with classical Victorian grace and charm, making it a comfortable place to be and relax. You'll find quality and tasteful furnishings and appointments, typical of a home (as it is!) rather than a vacation rental. With two larger bedrooms (queen beds) and one smaller bedroom (full bed), the flat will be most comfortable for about 4 persons sharing, but can sleep up to 6. It is perfect for a family, or for two couples travelling together. The kitchen is well-equipped and good for cooking and the dining room is pleasant for quiet dinners in. You will be pleased with the amenities and comfortable in the space - we're sure you'll feel at home!
One of the very first things that set this location apart from the rest was the owner. Tom actually responded to our inquiry in under 24 hours and had actually kept his calendar up to date!! We started our search for something in the SF area almost a month before our trip and found an endless stream of very slow responses, like more than 48 hours to not at all, and the ones that did respond were so sorry they hadn’t updated their calendars. We about 2 weeks from our travel date and were just on the verge of going after a hotel and Tom came through!
And are we ever glad he did. We were having a bit of a family reunion and extended stay and SF was going to be the gathering place. One son was flying in from Shang Hai while my other son and my husband and I were flying in from Memphis. The information to get there and get in were spot on and the old Victorian place was very, very nicely redone and decorated. It reminded us very much of some of the great midtown Memphis places.
They thought of so much for the road weary traveler from extra towels to toiletries. Comfortable beds and a great place to relax after seeing the sights. Having a washer and dryer was so nice too. The corner store was almost like having an extended pantry and fridge it was so convenient. Several nice places to eat within walking distance from Philz Coffee House and the juice bar across the street, the little hole in the wall pizza place and the noodle place on the corner.
It took a bit of getting used to raising the windows at night for fresh air, but that was quickly learned and much enjoyed. We thought the stairs would be a bit of a challenge each day, but that was very much a non-issue. Plenty of space for a married couple and two grown sons. Great place for a great price. If you like a rich community flavor, with a good splash of vintage and easy access to all things SF, then this is the place!
We were visiting relatives in the Bay area over the Christmas Holidays.
We received an early present when we rented Tom and Thomas's flat. This lovely apartment was all we could ask for , to accommodate our family. Everyone was more then satisfied with our location
We all enjoyed the quaint back yard and deck off the dining area to sit and enjoy the view.
We were able to experience a truly diverse neighboorhood with shops restaurants and many other interesting site.
We were teated well by our hosts and enjoyed a visit by both to see if we were settled in and comfortable.
The location was perfect to get around San Francisco and close to transprtation and the airport.
We are hoping to return to the bay area and if we do we certainly hope Tom and Thomas's apartment is still available.
If you have a vehicle parking is at a premium and if you have down time the T.V. may be an issue.
Otherwise the rooms are large and the kitchen is more then you will need.
Again thanks to our host if you want to see the San Francisco not everyone enjoys this is the place.
Other reviews mention that the house is very beautiful and clean and that the beds, bathroom, and kitchen are a pleasure. We had a nice warm morning and enjoyed having breakfast out on the back deck. Very sweet. The ceilings are so high that if the light burned out I wondered how I would get up there to change the bulb. This is a wonderful old building and yet the doors open and close quietly and fit perfectly and the old wooden floors are covered in comfy quiet rugs of warm colors. On a Saturday night I slept in the small bedroom which faces the street and I was expecting to be awake listening to the typical urban broohaha and I was pleasantly surprised that the street is unusually quiet. Not so over in the Tenderloin. My daughter had lived a street over for a while before and took us walking Sunday morning down to Phil's for coffee. There is an alley filled with artwork you must find and enjoy. The Mission is a place like non other in its richness. Parking was no problem over the weekend and I did use the hospital lot during the week which is only a couple of blocks away. No farther than you sometimes have to walk anyway to find a spot in a city. Lastly this a great location if you are driving because the freeway access is like two blocks away. So easy. I loved it.
The owners were very helpful in answering any questions we had before arrival. The apartment is clean and very well organized. Everything is at your fingertips. The pantry has great basic supplies. There are plenty of towels and linens. Three different bus lines run within 2 blocks. There are many unique places to eat in the neighborhood - they are included in the welcoming package as well as take out menus left at the house. We were there for the world series win Halloween, as well as "The Day of The Dead" celebrations so we really enjoyed the neighborhood.
We stayed here for 13 nights in September/October, and could not be happier. Tom answered every question we had prior to arrival and during our stay, and went out of his way to help us. The neighbors were also very helpful.
Mission District is very cool, and is a great place to stay for visiting places all over the city. There are buses leaving from right outside the door, and the BART station is only a 10-15 minute walk away. Buses one minute away leave for Downtown/Market, directly to Castro (outside the door) and directly to AT&T Stadium. As we were four people, we also got around/home at night by Taxi, which is fairly cheap. Taxi from SFO Airport only took about 15 minutes.
We took a Zipcar (several Zipcar parking lots close by) to the Safeway on 16th St. on the first day, the rest of our stay we found everything we needed close to the house, on 24th St. This street also have a lot of cafés for breakfasts and lunches and some other shops. There is a Walgreens on the next corner, very close.
The house was exactly what we needed. A full kitchen, dining table and a very nice patio with afternoon sun. The WiFi was strong and reliable. The area is not to noisy, and we felt quite safe. 4 people slept comfortably in 3 bedrooms, and there are small wardrobes and hangers in each room.
We can recommend staying in this apartment when you visit San Francisco!
Very quaint apartment. Everything about this unit was as described. Very clean and loaded with essentials. Definitely would recommend anyone wanting to stay near the Mission District in San Francisco to consider this property as we would stay again.
The Mission District is an ethnically diverse and hip urban neighborhood, a mix of quiet residential streets and interesting neighborhood retail districts, and the center of public mural art in San Francisco. The 24th Street corridor at your doorstep has countless great restaurants and fun bars, including a number of destination restaurants popular with the 'foodie' crowd of urban hipsters! The popular Valencia corridor is just a short distance away in the Mission too, with another wide selection of popular restaurants, bars, shops and galleries. The flat is 1 block from major city bus lines and an easy 15 minute walk to the BART (metro rail) station at Mission and 24th Streets. It is also a 2 block walk to San Francisco General Hospital. Downtown, SOMA, the Castro, Noe Valley, and other popular destinations beyond the Mission are convenient by public transit or even bicycle. For folks needing to commute either to the Peninsula/San Jose, or across the Bay Bridge to Oakland and beyond, easy access to US-101 and I-80 is also just blocks from the flat, making it one of the quickest commuting locations from the city. It's an interesting and vibrant neighborhood and will be a convenient home base for many San Francisco visitors.
