Whether you are a Vacationing Family, a Romantic Couple or Friends on a Getaway Retreat, you’ll find all of these activities and more nearby when you stay at this tastefully furnished end-unit townhouse.

Up to 6 people can enjoy luxurious bedding that includes a Queen Size bed in the master bedroom upstairs with a super-comfy Sealy Posturpedic mattress, Twin Beds in another bedroom downstairs, and a Sofa Bed in the living room. Soft down throws and excellent lighting provide a comfortable reading habitat. Or if you prefer, the master bedroom also includes a flat screen TV for your viewing pleasure.

You will be pleased to find a Kitchen Fully Furnished with all the dishes, utensils, cookware, etc., you’ll need to prepare just about any meal, along with free condiments.

Conveniently located: A Back Deck includes patio table and chairs and a gas grill. You’ll stay nestled against a wooded area for maximum serenity and privacy. Best of all, you will like our home’s Friendly Atmosphere that will wrap around you like a warm blanket on a cold winter day.

You’ll be situated 1-1/4 mile from the Eagle Ridge Inn and a General Store renowned for gourmet selections. If you’re in the mood for fresh air and exercise, you can step outside to access a picturesque walking trail that winds just a few yards outside the door. Other features include:

• Free Wireless Internet. A secure password-protected network.

• A cornucopia of Kitchen Condiments, spices and staples, including coffee and tea selections. This means you don’t have to spend time and money buying a shopping cart full of staples when all you need is a dollop of this and that.

• Gas fireplace. A simple flick of the switch creates warmth and a mood of romance.

We love people, especially children!: • Child friendly. Our home is equipped with a “Pack ‘n Play” portable crib, along with children’s toys, games and DVDs. Our Insider’s Guide will advise you of numerous fun-filled activities in the area for children of all ages.

• People friendly. We also own the unit next door as our personal vacation home. If we are around, feel free to stop by to say hello and join us for refreshments and conversation. If we’re not present during your visit, simply call us with any questions you may have.

• Insiders’ Guide Book. It’s based on living in this area since 1987 and offers reviews of attractions that go way beyond what you’ll find in tourist literature. You’ll get steered to the best restaurants and recreational sites – and advised of some you may want to stay away from. You’ll get unusual ideas about fun things to do and places to go.

About the area: We’re situated in the hilly terrain of “The Galena Territory,” only 8 miles from the historic town of Galena near the northwest corner of Illinois. Forget flat farmland. Ancient glaciers pushed out in this direction and left behind a scenic wonderland of rolling hills and the highest elevations in the state. Fall coloration is truly a sight to behold in this area.

The town of Galena is renowned for a Main St. lined with shops filled with antiques, collectibles, artwork, wine studios, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, restaurants, bars and more. You can spend hours browsing and shopping.

Another 20-minute drive will take you to across the mighty Mississippi to the vibrant river city of Dubuque, Iowa. If casino gaming and/or dog racing is your thing, this town has some of the best facilities of their kind in the Midwest. If that’s not your thing, Dubuque has a number of other attractions going for it, including a top-notch National River Museum.

About Jim Olsztynski

Jenny and I traveled extensively during long careers as working professionals. We learned a lot about what makes travelers and visitors comfortable, and are determined not to put our guests through some of the “road warrior” horror stories we experienced over the years

.

As rental property owners in The Galena Territory, we have applied these lessons to make our townhome comfortable, convenient, homey and friendly for all of our guests.

For many years we used our townhome as a retreat to decompress from the stress of long hours in high-pressure jobs. It seemed our heads would clear as soon as we crossed the Jo Daviess County line.

Now as retirees we still enjoy basking in the serenity and natural beauty of this area and pursuing its abundant recreational and tourist activities. Even after more than two decades of home ownership in the area, we continue to discover new sights to see and things to do. -- Jim & Jenny Olsztynski, Mt. Prospect, IL

Jim Olsztynski purchased this townhome in 2011

Why Jim Olsztynski chose Galena

Jenny and I first experienced The Galena Territory as renters ourselves when we vacationed here with our two young daughters. That was back in 1986, and we were so infatuated with the area that one month later we returned to buy a townhouse that at the time existed only as a floor plan. Construction got finished in July of 1987, and we have been enjoying our getaway home out here ever since.

Our daughters have since grown up and we now have four impossibly charming grandchildren that love to visit The Galena Territory with us. This expanded family outgrew our single townhome, so when our neighbors next door decided to sell their unit, we jumped at the chance to acquire additional living space.

What makes this townhome unique

You'll love the woodsy seclusion. Even though we are part of a string of 16 townhomes, the end unit where you'll be staying offers serene privacy and is a great venue for bird-watching -- along with the occasional raccoon, wild turkeys and other non-threatening critters.

You will also appreciate how well-stocked this place is with food condiments, coffee and tea, toys, games & DVDs for kids and more. You'll find more supplies here than at any 5-star hotel!

lovely and clean condo

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely and clean condo with 2 bedrooms and two baths. It is so clean and has everything you need for a short stay. Very quiet area. We have stayed here I think 3 times and would definitely return. They have coffee, tea, sugar, salt, etc in the kitchen. They have a washer and dryer which is a plus. You also get to use the Galena Territory Recreation center which has an indoor and outdoor pool

Breathtaking views

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely spot with a small, but well-equipped kitchen, (so many incidentals to meet every need) comfy beds, including the sofa bed!! Close to Galena, wonderful guide book with endless tips for enjoying the area. Quiet, secluded, many options for walks through breathtaking vistas. Saw a fox, heard turkeys, birds everywhere, nature in riotous bloom. Wish we could have stayed longer.

AWESOME!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED your place! Everything was as it was advertised on VRBO and MORE. We were there for (3) nights and even though the information you sent us prior to arrival said that there would be the basics-the basics went far beyond. Several varieties of coffee were available, many spices and cooking utensils. We really only needed to bring our personal items and clothing. We have already discussed renting from you again later in the season to take advantage of the outdoor recreation in the area. Thanks so much for making your guest home so accommodating!

Great place to stay (all the amenities)

  • 4 of 5

I stayed here with a few friends on a girls' getaway weekend, and we loved this place. Very well-taken care of 2 bedroom home (1 queen size bed upstairs, and two single size beds downstairs). It was great having two full bathrooms with enough towels, and the kitchen was well-stocked with spices, condiments, etc. Everything was in working order. We spent lots of time on the back deck and could hear and see many different types of birds.

We hiked 4 miles on the paved trails, doing a few different loops in the beautiful weather. It was very quiet, and we didn't see many people around, which surprised us. We did not use the passes to enjoy the tennis or swimming facilities, but it was nice to know that we could have done that (we just ran out of time with such a beautiful weekend). Shopping in downtown Galena was only about a 10 minute drive away. Also a short drive to the Galena Vineyard on North Ford Rd. just past Stagecoach Rd. Try some wine, then choose your favorite and sit on the porch and look at the view.

It was a little difficult to find a happy medium in temperature sometimes due to one bedroom upstairs and one downstairs. The people downstairs were cold, or the ones upstairs were hot. Heat rises, so not sure what can be done about that. The price was very reasonable but there is a cleaning fee which added to the cost a bit (it was very clean).

Jim and Jenny were very accommodating to our group and we appreciate their hospitality. This is a great place to stay for a girls' get-together, or a small family getaway. Way better than a hotel! I would highly recommend this place!

Great Weekend with family

  • 5 of 5

Spent 2 nights with our daughter, son-in-law and 2 children. Although the weather was really cold on Friday, everyone had a wonderful day skiing at close by Chestnut Mountain. The townhome was beautifully decorated and spotless. The extra amenities included easily accessible pool passes and towels, extra bed linens and so much useful information. The kitchen was stocked with everyday essentials, including coffee. The appliances all seemed new and worked beautifully. The kids slept on the pull out sofa, which was as comfortable as a real bed. Jim was very gracious and easy to work with during the rental process. The location is perfect, close to everything including downtown Galena. We are all looking forward to returning soon.

Nestled among the most beautiful hills and valleys in the Midwest, The Galena Territory is a 6,800-acre planned residential and recreational community with award-winning Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa at its heart. Property owners and their guests enjoy a variety of amenities that include boating and fishing on Lake Galena, hiking on 23 miles of trails through pristine woodlands and prairies, 63-holes of championship golf, and horseback riding at the Shenandoah Riding Center.

Eight miles away is the town of Galena. Bisected by the Galena River, Galena lies within a National Register Historic District and is renowned for a downtown Main St. lined with shops filled with antiques, collectibles, artwork, wine studios, an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, dining facilities and more. You can spend hours browsing on your own or take a narrated trolley tour (May through October). Periodic housewalks enable you to peer inside fascinating old houses and mansions. The Galena River Trail follows the river for 3.5 miles of scenic cycling or walking, leading to breathtaking views of the Mississippi River.

Another 20-minute drive will take you to across the mighty Mississippi to the vibrant river city of Dubuque, Iowa. If casino gaming and/or dog racing is your thing, this town has some of the best facilities of their kind in the Midwest. If that’s not your thing, Dubuque has a number of other attractions going for it, including a top-notch River Museum, riverfront festivals, modern movie theaters, symphony orchestra and other cultural attractions – along with the region’s best modestly-priced restaurant. (That’s one of the secrets you’ll find in a special “Insider’s Guide Book” provided to our rental guests.) Take a few minutes to take a $1 ride on Dubuque’s “fernicular,” a unique mode of transportation up and down the town’s steepest hill.

Do you like to ski or snowboard? The Chestnut Mount Resort is only 20 minutes away. Overlooking the Mississippi River, this renowned Midwestern ski retreat offers 19 ski runs amid fantastic views of three surrounding states and “Old Muddy” itself. In the warm weather off-season, treat your kids and yourselves to Chestnut Mountain’s “Alpine Slide.” It’s a fun-filled sled ride down the mountainside via chutes, with a ski lift ride back to the top.

Closer to home, during wintertime the South Golf Course in the Galena Territory turns into the Winter Wonderland Nordic Center, featuring cross country skiing, downhill sledding/tubing, and ice skating on a nearby pond. You can rent equipment for a small fee, and the Nordic Center is barely a hundred yards from our home.

Spring and summer offer even more recreational opportunities within the Galena Territory. It houses 63 holes of challenging golf, including “The General,” a regular on Golf Digest’s “Top 100 Resort Courses” list. Or, try out one of several nearby courses that are less challenging and more modestly priced.

If tennis is your game, you’ll have access to TWO separate private tennis facilities, free of charge. One is at the Territory Club, the other at a property owners’ marina.

Territory Club facilities include an indoor/outdoor pool (to open Summer 2012), fitness center, game room, gymnasium and reading/TV room and tennis courts. Visit www.thegalenaterritory.com for hours and more information.

The property owners’ marina is open May through October for boat rentals. You can also rent fishing gear if you don’t bring your own. The marina sits on Lake Galena, a serene man-made lake three miles long that teems with panfish, bass, crappie, muskie and a few other species.

Horseback riding also is available with guided trail rides via the Shenandoah Riding Center. Or, simply enjoy free-of-charge dozens of picturesque miles of paved hiking trails that wind throughout The Galena Territory.

Feel like going up, up and away! Hot air balloon rides are available when weather permits for breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside from up to 4,000 feet above ground. Summertime also brings with it periodic outdoor concerts and hayrides.

A children’s sand-filled playground is easily accessible from our home, and we will guide you to numerous fun-filled activities for children of all ages.

Whether it’s rest and relaxation you crave, or more vigorous activities, our Friendly Retreat is the place for you.
