On the Big Island of Hawaii, where beaches, waterfalls, golf courses, and rainforests are ordinary as the air we breathe, sits our four-bedroom (2 Master Suites), four and a half bath house, with private one bedroom one bath downstairs cottage featuring its own full kitchen and entrance. Nestled in the quaint subdivision of Magic Sands Estates, Akai Hale is a 4,000 square foot, Island style home. Everything was perfect! The pictures do not do it justice. Prime location, close to eveything but still quiet. This beautiful home is so spacious, plenty of room for all of the family with private rooms, baths, huge closets, the most comfortable beds, tastefully decorated with ocean breezes to put us to sleep at night. Fabulous view throughout the home. Pool was perfect temperature, clean, well kept, surrounded by gorgeous landscaping and extremely private. There were fans and air conditioning, but we never turned them on because the breeze kept the place cool. I can't say enough about this home. Zach was so easy to work with, very geniuine and great customer service. I would highly recommend this house and would definitely rent it again the next time we visit.
Our group of 8 adults and 1 toddler could not have been happier at this house. with 2 living rooms upstairs, 4 bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, a well appointed kitchen (that could use a new set of knives if I'm being really picky!) and an entire separate apartment downstairs, we could have housed even more people for our trip. The loft room upstairs had a closet large enough to put the crib in it that we rented for the toddler so she had her own space too.
Other reviews talked about the lack of AC, well Zac and his wife have fixed that. Each bedroom has AC as well as ceiling fans keeping you nice and cool while sleeping. The main parts of the house just have ceiling fans, and we happened to be there pre-hurricane when it was incredibly hot, so the main parts of the house were pretty sweltering, so we just jumped in the nice big pool to cool off.
The place is in a great location. Just a few miles south of town and close to one of the best snorkeling beaches around. You can rent equipment right on the beach. And its a pretty short drive down to Captain Cook and Two Step as well.
If this is your first time staying in a house instead of a hotel there are things to remember: bring your own toiletries! shampoo is not provided. Also, bring laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent. Or at least be prepared to go to Target for it if the previous tenants didn't leave any behind. There are many TVs at the house so if you have trouble deciding what to watch you can split up, but even though there was a remote for a DVD player at the house, the player itself was nowhere to be found. Not a big deal.
Also, at night the cockroaches come out... but only outside. It's tropical, so if you are scared of bugs this might not be the place for you... I mean Hawaii, not the house. The interior of the house was spotless and bug free.
Overall, our whole group loved this place. We will definitely be back and looking to stay with Zac again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely home. It's located on a cul-de-sac, a walk away from White Sands Beach, and close to many great snorkeling spots. With four couples on this trip, this house was perfect. We all felt we had our own "living environment" - space away from the other couples - but also loved the open kitchen, living room and large deck area with plenty of table space for eating, conversing, playing games and alike. The pool was used daily - perfect temperature to cool down during the warm Hawaiian afternoons. The view from the top floor balcony (penthouse bedroom) provided opportunities to catch a sunset or just lookout on the beautiful coastline.
Zac was great to work with. He explained that they had just replaced some bedding, installed new wall A/C units, and done some other updating. As a result, we slept wonderfully (best night's sleep in a LONG time) and the A/C was much appreciated during some of the warmer days this past week. We were all happy with the quality of the appliances (coffee maker, mixer, microwave, barbecue, etc.) and there was an ample supply of plates, silverware, glasses, pots/pans, bowls to accommodate our group who loves to cook/barbecue when we get together.
We were a bit nervous selecting this place because there weren't that many pictures on the VRBO site. But no worries, the rooms are nice-sized, everyone had their own bathroom (clean and in good shape), there was ample living space (and furniture to accommodate a large group), and fans in every room to help with air flow.
We had a few gecko "friends" in and out of the house, which we found to be fun and comforting. They were very good at keeping the place largely "bug free". One morning we woke up to see a 7" long chameleon outside, which made for some great enjoyment watching him climb up a tree and change colors!
A few of our favorite excursions, for those who want to know: early morning snorkeling (usually with turtles), zip line excursion at Kohala Zipline (cute town of Kawi nearby that is great to visit), kayaking at Kealakekua Bay (about 20 minutes away), watching sunset/manta ray's at the Sheraton Resort (about 2 miles away), downtown dining (lots of great restaurants) but don't miss the best Poke in town at Umekes (amazing)!
This house was a disappointment. So was the owner.
--The bedrooms were easily 5-10 degrees hotter than outside (outside was 88), with no cross breeze and hardly any help from the fans provided. We had two toddlers with us and feared for their well being sleeping in such hot conditions.
--The ice maker ran out of ice our second day there. It took four days for it to fill up again. I contacted the owner about it. He never responded but sent over a repair guy four days after my email who came to the house unannounced.
--I emailed the owner in advance and asked if they had high chairs or any kid things. He said no. Upon arrival, we found the house had two high chairs and a baby gate. Would have been nice not to have to spend the money on renting them.
--I had to contact the owner prior to arrival about phone and check in information. I feel like that's something that the owner should be proactive about.
--The wireless wasn't working when we first got there. Contacted the owner. He came over the next day and explained that they forgot to change the login/password info on their house information sheet. Then it worked for a bit and then kept cutting out. I didn't contact him again about it because he was unreliable.
--It was hot while we were there. I will not blame the owner for that. What I will blame him for is not trying to make our accommodations more comfortable. Sweating your way through the nights with two toddlers is not my idea of vacation. The architecture of the house does not lend itself to any kind of cross breeze in ANY of the bedrooms. The front living area is the coolest part of the house and quite nice. It's too bad the rest of the house couldn't follow suit.
--There was no wine opener. This seems petty but really, what vacation house doesn't have a wine opener?
--I emailed the owner with all of this information after our departure. He had nothing to say other than "thank you for your feedback". That was even more upsetting.
This house would be perfect if the owner was a better property manager (a lot of the issues could have been avoided/fixed by him) and if it had A/C units in each of the bedrooms. The pool was great and the house was very spacious but that didn't make up for all of the shortcomings.
We had a family reunion for Christmas 2011 and rented the property including the apartment. There were 11 of us including 3 kids ages 2, 5, and 9, and grandparents. The house was perfect! Fantastic location: walking distance to two beaches, easy drive to shops and restaurants, but still in quiet residential neighborhood. Landlord was easy to get hold of (we thought the fridge had gone out, but we had just packed it too full!) and very easy to deal with. The house itself was in great shape, very clean, and well stocked with linens and towels. We would absolutely recommend this property to interested renters! Zac, thanks for making our stay in Hawaii so easy and stress free!
This vacation home is a block from the water, close to town and activities, spacious, clean and great for families. You will also enjoy the game room and pool! Our family and friends would recommend this vacation rental.
